I-402 (伊号第四百二潜水艦, I-gō-dai yon-hyaku-ni-sensuikan) was an Imperial Japanese Navy Sentoku-type (or I-400-class) submarine commissioned in 1945 for service in World War II. Originally intended to be a submarine aircraft carrier like her sister ships I-400 and I-401, she instead was completed as a submarine tanker, but entered service less than a month before the end of the war and never carried out a tanker voyage. She surrendered to the United States at the end of the war in 1945 and was scuttled in 1946. Until 1965, the Sentaku-type submarines were the largest submarines ever commissioned. (en)

L'I-402 è stato uno dei tre sommergibili portaerei oceanici di classe I-400 (Sen Toku secondo la classificazione giapponese) completati, appartenente alla marina imperiale giapponese. Questi tre sottomarini, ognuno dei quali poteva trasportare tre idrovolanti Aichi M6A Seiran, sono stati sviluppati e costruiti durante la seconda guerra mondiale e sono stati i più grandi sottomarini mai realizzati prima dello sviluppo dei sottomarini nucleari. Nel 1942, il Giappone aveva pianificato la costruzione di 18 sottomarini di questo tipo con l'intenzione di portare attacchi alla costa orientale statunitense e allo sbocco orientale del canale di Panama. Tuttavia, a causa delle forti perdite di navi della flotta nipponica e alla sempre maggiore scarsità di materie prime, fu deciso infine di mettere in cantiere solo cinque di essi. A partire dal 1944, erano stati costruiti solamente tre sottomarini di classe Sen Toku: l', costruito a Kure, e l' e l'I-402, costruiti a Sasebo. Entrato in servizio solo alla fine della guerra, l'I-402 non prese mai parte a nessun combattimento e fu confiscato e poi distrutto dagli Stati Uniti d'America una volta terminato il conflitto. (it)
