Herci specifickými prostředky (hlasem, mimikou, pohybem těla atd.) účinkující zobrazují nějaký děj nebo myšlenku. Jedná se o místo, kde také pravidelně probíhá část divadelního provozu. Existuje více druhů divadel, záleží zde vždy na typu představení. Může se jednat o divadla vytvořená přesně pro určitý druh představení, obvykle se ale jedná o divadla, která byla postavena jako víceúčelová. Existují divadla otevřená, katedrální stavby, místnosti bez dekorací, tzv. „černé skříňky“, které nemusí mít možnosti pro vytvoření vhodné scény. Vývoj divadla od řeckého amfiteátru k současnému kukátkovému divadlu směřoval k vytváření dokonalé iluze a typ budovy odpovídal vždy dobové povaze divadelního umění a dále také sociálnímu složení obyvatelstva (převažující masy potenciálních diváků). (eo) Das Theater als Bauform in der Architektur ist im antiken Griechenland entwickelt worden, mit Sitzreihen im Zuschauerraum, mit Orchestra und Bühne (Skene). Orchestra war der Graben zwischen Zuschauerräumen und der Bühne. Daher kommt das heutige Wort Orchester. Das Theater war so gebaut, dass man überall im Theater alles hören konnte. Früher durften alle, außer den Sklaven, das Theater besuchen. Im Theater der griechischen Antike durften nur Männer auf die Bühne, später in den Theatern der Römer mit ähnlicher Bauform durften auch Frauen mitspielen. Der erste feste und geschlossene Theaterbau seit der Antike war das Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, ab 1580 von Andrea Palladio errichtet und 1585 durch Vincenzo Scamozzi fertiggestellt. Erster frei stehender Theaterbau in Deutschland war das 1606 fertiggestellte Ottoneum in Kassel. Ein weiterer wichtiger Theaterbau in Deutschland war das in Ulm im Jahr 1641 nach den Plänen des Stadtbaumeisters Joseph Furttenbach erbaute Theater in der dortigen Lateinschule. In der damals freien Reichsstadt (und Hauptstadt des Schwäbischen Bundes) wurde wegen des großen Publikumsandrangs zu Theateraufführungen ein „Zweckbau“ für das Theater errichtet, der bereits Vorhang und Orchestergraben hatte und mit einer wie auf italienischen Bühnen üblichen Technik ausgestattet war, unter anderem also mit prismenförmigen, drehbaren Kulissen (Telari). In diesem Theater gab es für das Publikum 600 in ansteigender Folge angeordnete Sitzplätze und 150 Stehplätze. Schon 1650 wurde es auf 1000 Plätze vergrößert. Die moderne Entwicklung des Theaterbaus geht im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert über Gottfried Semper und Richard Wagner zu Max Littmann, die den damals üblichen Logenbau durch eine amphitheatralische Anordnung der Sitzreihen überwanden. Der Zuschauerraum in einem Entwurf für das Erste Dresdner Hoftheater (Semper) ist bereits halbkreisförmig, in den Entwürfen für ein Wagner-Festspielhaus in München (Semper mit Wagner) erprobten die beiden dann amphitheatrale Anordnungen. Wagner und sein Architekt Otto Brückwald perfektionieren diese Bauform im Bayreuther Festspielhaus. Walter Gropius umschloss 1926 mit dem Konzept des Totaltheaters die Bühne wieder vollständig, aber nicht wie beim römischen Amphitheater durch einen geschlossenen Sitzreihenring, sondern durch zwei gegenüberliegende Zuschauerräume. Concebido en su origen para representaciones teatrales, sirve también para funciones de danza y música. Si bien no siempre se requiere un edificio para el teatro dramático -como sucede en el teatro callejero- la arquitectura para esta sirve para organizar los espacios de actuación y audiencia así también como para proveer espacios de trabajo y comodidades para el equipo técnico, los intérpretes y el público. La evolución arquitectónica de los edificios teatrales a lo largo de la historia está intrínsecamente relacionada con el tipo de espectáculos representados en ellos y con sus necesidades acústicas. Najstarsze, pochodzące z czasów starożytnych są teatry greckie i rzymskie. W okresie średniowiecza nie budowano obiektów przeznaczonych dla odgrywania w nich widowisk teatralnych. Przedstawienia odbywały się w kościołach, w salach zamkowych lub na prowizorycznie wzniesionych scenach, podiach z ustawioną dekoracją w postaci lekkich ścianek symbolicznie wydzielających wnętrza rozgrywanej sztuki. Czasem był to ażurowy pawilon tzw. "mansjon" symbolizujący obiekt, w którym przebiega akcja sztuki. Stałe obiekty, przeznaczone specjalnie dla wystawiania sztuk zaczęto wznosić dopiero w XVI – XVII wieku. W budynkach takich umieszczano scenę i widownię w jednym dużym pomieszczeniu. Forma architektoniczna takiego rozwiązania wzorowana była na scenach ustawianych np. na dziedzińcach zamkowych, placach przy zajazdach itp. wcześniejszych podwyższeń na których rozgrywała się sztuka obserwowana przez widzów z okalających place ganków, okien i balkonów. W budynku teatralnym znajduje się wiele innych pomieszczeń przeznaczonych dla aktorów (np. garderoby, charakteryzatornie), rekwizytornie, pracownie, w których przygotowywane są dekoracje, rekwizyty, stroje (ubrania, peruki) i wiele innych pomieszczeń niezbędnych dla przygotowania przedstawienia (np. sale prób śpiewu, tańca). Oprócz pomieszczeń zaplecza technicznego związanego z właściwym oświetleniem, nagłośnieniem itp. w budynku teatralnym znajdują się miejsca ogólno dostępne dla widza. Wejście do teatru, zazwyczaj wykonane w reprezentacyjnej formie prowadzi przez hall do foyer. Widownia teatralna często złożona jest z części parterowej o amfiteatralnie ustawionych rzędach krzeseł i części piętrowej rozlokowanej na balkonach. Balkony zajmują dwa-, trzy- czasem cztery piętra. Najwyższe nazywane są "jaskółkami", dawniej mieściły tylko miejsca stojące. Balkony, najczęściej tylko pierwszego piętra, dzielone są na loże. Najbardziej reprezentacyjne miejsca na widowni umieszczone są w loży balkonu I piętra, na wprost sceny. Przy lożach, zwłaszcza przy loży środkowej, umieszczano mały gabinet służący do odpoczynku i spotkań towarzyskich w trakcie antraktu. Loże budowano także w poziomie parteru, pod usytuowanymi nad nimi balkonami. Scena oddzielona jest od widowni tzw. rampą. W czasach obecnych jest to po prostu krawędź sceny. Dawniej wzdłuż niej ustawiano szereg lamp oświetlających scenę. W zagłębieniu przed sceną, częściowo pod nią mieści się orkiestron (w teatrach przystosowanych do wystawiania spektakli muzycznych: oper, baletu). Dawniej, w środkowej części sceny, tuż przy rampie umieszczano tzw. budkę suflera. Z widowni była widoczna w postaci wystającej nad poziom sceny niskiej osłony, często w kształcie muszli. Kurtyna oddzielająca scenę od widowni składa się właściwie z trzech zasłon. Najlżejsza używana jest do zasłaniania sceny podczas przerw w przedstawieniu. Druga, często o bogatej dekoracji widoczna jest przez widzów tuż przed widowiskiem, trzecia oddziela scenę od widowni w czasie, gdy teatr jest zamknięty dla widzów. Pełni ona rolę przegrody pożarowej, zabezpieczając teatr.
