Der Begriff Seniorenzentrum hat zwei unterschiedliche Bedeutungen. Er kann eine Begegnungsstätte für ältere Menschen bezeichnen – vergleichbar einem Jugendzentrum. Hierbei wird häufig auch versucht, Generationen-übergreifend Personen unterschiedlichen Alters zusammenzubringen. Meistens wird er jedoch für Altenwohn- oder Pflegeeinrichtungen verwendet.

(fr) A retirement community is a residential community or housing complex designed for older adults who are generally able to care for themselves; however, assistance from home care agencies is allowed in some communities, and activities and socialization opportunities are often provided. Some of the characteristics typically are: the community must be age-restricted or age-qualified, residents must be partially or fully retired, and the community offers shared services or amenities. There are various types of retirement communities older adults can choose from, and new types of retirement communities are being developed as the population ages. Examples of retirement community types include: * Assisted Living Communities, also known as Assisted Living and Memory Care assisted living communities, which provide all the daily services seniors need in an apartment or condominium style environment - such as activities, dining, housekeeping, nursing, and wellness - usually in a locked and secured building. * Congregate housing, which includes at least one shared meal per day with other residents. * Continuing Care Retirement Communities, which are further defined below. * Elder/Senior cohousing * Independent senior living communities, also known as Independent Living Communities, which offer no personal care services. * Leisure or lifestyle oriented communities or LORCs, which include various amenities. * Mobile homes or RV's for active adults. * Subsidized housing for lower income older adults. Retirement communities are often built in warm climates, and are common in Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, and Texas, but they are increasingly being built in and around major cities throughout the United States. The oldest known and longest continuously running retirement community in the United States is Ryderwood, Washington. Ryderwood was originally established in 1923 as a Long-Bell logging camp, then was sold to Senior Estates, Inc. in 1953 to create a retirement community. Senior Estates, Inc. converted the town into a retirement community. Time Magazine covered the event in the Real Estate section with the article "Old Folks at Home". As of 2019, Ryderwood remains a retirement community. Del Webb opened Sun City, Arizona, with the active adult concept, in 1960. In 2011, The Villages, Florida became the largest of these communities.While new retirement communities have developed in various areas of the United States, they are largely marketed to older adults who are financially secure. Lower income retirement communities are rare except for government subsidized housing, which neglects a large proportion of older adults who have fewer financial resources. De flats zijn gegroepeerd binnen een eerder bescheiden appartementencomplex met een zeker autonoom of zelfstandig statuut doch verbonden met een OCMW op zich of bejaardentehuis (privé-initiatief of aangesloten bij een OCMW). In België behoort deze dienstverleningsvorm tot de bevoegdheid van de gemeenschappen, bijvoorbeeld de Vlaamse overheid. Om zich kandidaat te stellen voor een serviceflat of dienstenflat moet men zich, naargelang de aard van de maatschappelijk georganiseerde welzijnssituatie in zijn of haar woonomgeving, aanmelden bij de sociale dienst van een OCMW of de sociale dienst van een bejaardenhome die beschikt over een dergelijke sociale infrastructuur. In een serviceflat of dienstenflat woont men in grote mate zelfstandig maar heeft men zoals de naam doet vermoeden thuiszorg binnen onmiddellijk handbereik. Deze zorgfaciliteiten worden georganiseerd vanuit een permanentiedienst die deel uitmaakt van het betrokken appartementencomplex of de moederorganisatie zoals een OCMW op zich of bejaardenhome (privéinitiatief of aangesloten bij een OCMW). De bewoners staan via een personenalarmsysteem rechtstreeks in contact of verbinding met een permanentiedienst zoals genoemd. Wanneer er zich een probleem voordoet, kan men dit eenvoudig signaleren en wordt men vrij snel geholpen door speciaal daartoe opgeleid personeel. De techniek van een personenalarmsysteem kan, zij het onder een licht gewijzigde vorm, bij iedere zorgbehoevende die in een gewoon, particulier huis woont geïnstalleerd worden. Hulp- of noodoproepen worden dan doorgeschakeld naar een centrale die volgens een prioriteitenlijstje, eerder opgesteld door de beller, familie, vrienden, kennissen of buren verwittigt om het probleem te checken. Zo’n systeem kan in Vlaanderen aangevraagd worden via de sociale dienst van een mutualiteit of ziekenfonds alsook in een thuiszorgwinkel daarbij aangesloten. Een gelijkaardig principe van zorgfaciliteiten zoals bij de serviceflats of dienstenflats wordt soms toegepast op het systeem van de seniorenwoning maar de onafhankelijkheid van de bewoner in het laatste geval is nog net dat ietsje groter dan bij de serviceflats of dienstenflats. Van personen gehuisvest in een bejaardenwoning wordt dan ook nog meer zelfredzaamheid verwacht omdat deze vaak zelf of hun verwanten letterlijk en figuurlijk meer stappen moeten zetten om de thuiszorg georganiseerd te krijgen.
