La Segunda República Federal es el nombre con el que se le conoce al segundo intento federalista en la historia de México. Oficialmente llamada Estados Unidos Mexicanos, la república federal fue restaurada el 22 de agosto de 1846, cuando el presidente interino José Mariano Salas, expidió el decreto que restauraba la Constitución de 1824. En este periodo, la república atravesó nuevamente un lapso caótico, marcado por una grave inestabilidad política que provocó varios conflictos internos como la Guerra de Reforma. Otros hechos históricos relevantes durante este periodo fueron la dictadura de Santa Anna, la Venta de La Mesilla y la promulgación de la Constitución de 1857. Durante este periodo hubo dos conflictos internacionales; la conclusión de la invasión estadounidense, donde México se vio forzado a perder más de la mitad de su territorio a favor de los Estados Unidos y la invasión de Francia. La República Federal duró casi diecisiete años, fue gobernada por 14 presidentes de los cuales sólo José Joaquín de Herrera concluyó su mandato constitucional. La República fue disuelta el 10 de julio de 1863 con el decreto de cambio de modelo de gobierno a una monarquía hereditaria, lo cual dio inicio al Segundo Imperio Mexicano gobernado por Maximiliano I. The Second Federal Republic of Mexico (Spanish: Segunda República Federal de México) is the name given to the second attempt to achieve a federalist government in Mexico after a period of centralism. Officially called the United Mexican States (Estados Unidos Mexicanos), a federal republic was established again on August 22, 1846 when interim president José Mariano Salas issued a decree restoring the 1824 constitution. The Second Republic continued to be rocked by the political instability that had characterized Mexico since independence. Mexico's loss in the war with the United States during this time saw half of Mexican territory become part of the United States. Antonio López de Santa Anna who had played a major role in the war, and been disgraced as a result, afterwards returned to the presidency, selling more territory to the United States and becoming increasingly autocratic. In response, liberals promulgated of the Plan of Ayutla in 1854, calling for the overthrow of Santa Anna's dictatorship. Santa Anna was overthrown and liberals enacted a series of sweeping reforms, including a new federalist constitution, collectively known as the Liberal Reform, which then sparked a civil war with conservatives, known as the War of the Reform, from 1857 to 1860. The conservatives lost the war, but the liberals' triumph was soon interrupted by a French-backed campaign in 1861, resulting from collaboration with the recently defeated conservatives. The French attempted to help the Mexican Conservative party set up a sovereign, or independent, Mexican monarchy known as the Second Mexican Empire, which some refer to as a client state. They invited Archduke Maximilian of Austria to serve as monarch of the Mexican Empire. Mexican republicans nonetheless fought against the French who they regarded as invaders, led by Benito Juárez's government in exile, which was backed, at first unofficially, by the United States. The French, supplemented by the local Mexican Imperial Army, were able to consolidate control of most of the nation. Later, as pressure from wars in Europe mounted, and pressure also from the United States (which after the end of the American Civil War, could more effectively enforce the Monroe Doctrine), French forces withdrew from Mexico, leading to the weakening and then final collapse of the Mexican Empire in 1867. The period of the Second Republic following the end of the Second Empire, is known as the Restored Republic. (en)
