This article takes into consideration a part of the corpus of letters sent by Marco to his brother in the period between 1479 and 1481: this is the period during which the Venetian merchant was in Pera (Constantinople). Here the attention, rather than on business itself, focuses on the organizational aspects of overseas travel: trips by sea, complicated by the plague (from Venice to Crete, and from there to Chio and the Turkish coast), those by land (towards Brussa and then Constantinople), the collection of information on the different markets and competitors, instructions and advice for its collaborators, without forgetting the interest shown in some aspects of “Turkey”‘s culture; then the life in Pera, with the choice of a house and the opening of a small shop, the strategies in order to buy the most profitable goods, and not least the care taken to create, or strenghten, personal ties with members of local, Ottoman or Venetian consular, administration; for Marco Constantinople was also a starting point for several other commercial trips in the area. And all this in contact with his brother, with letters that stress the different perception between Marco and his family in Venice concerning this commercial trip.

These manuscripts, still very little known, gather together all the fiscal, administrative and commercial steps to be followed by the Venetians in Alexandria in order to import and export their merchandise. Thus, they provide a unique insider's view of the workings of one of the biggest markets of the medieval era. The codices are presented in full and with a detailed commentary. The volume also includes a Venetian merchant's manual from the end of the Middle Ages that covers the entirety of Venice's area of economic activity.

Unlike other sister auxiliary disciplines, such as epigraphy or numismatics, sigillography has not yet benefited from the experience gained within the Digital Humanities. SigiDoc, the newborn encoding standard for Byzantine seals, is the first attempt to bridge this gap. This paper is aimed at investigating the interactive fusion of aspects of interdisciplinarity between Byzantine Sigillography and the Digital Humanities whilst illustrating the 'digital genealogy' of SigiDoc in the broader context of TEI, as well as its relationship of reciprocity with open source initiatives and tools, such as EpiDoc and EFES (EpiDoc Front-End Services).

This paper is aimed at investigating the interactive fusion of aspects of interdisciplinarity between Byzantine Sigillography and the Digital Humanities whilst illustrating the 'digital genealogy' of SigiDoc in the broader context of TEI, as well as its relationship of reciprocity with open source initiatives and tools, such as EpiDoc and EFES (EpiDoc Front-End Services).

effort for the encoding of Byzantine seals. SigiDoc represents the first attempt to extend the digital approach –
already applied to inscriptions, coins and papyri – to Byzantine seals (and bread stamps). The project — which
has been discussed, albeit without results, in the framework of Byzantine studies since the early 2000s — was
taken up in 2015 by Alessio Sopracasa as part of his Marie Curie fellowship, and the work is currently continuing
through a collaboration between Paris, London and Cologne, particularly with Martina Filosa. SigiDoc is in a
fairly advanced development phase and currently allows the display of metadata dealing with the seal as an
object, such as physical description, history of the seal, typology, description of the iconography, as well as the
critical edition of the legend, along with apparatus criticus and commentary. The transformation of XML documents into a webpage, various indexing possibilities, a search interface as well as multi-lingual features are delivered to SigiDoc by EFES (EpiDoc Front-End Services).
