Drawing on excavation data from two archaeological sites on Menorca, Torre d’en Galmés and Torrepetxina, this study shows how Andalusian farming groups settled among the prehistoric Talayotic ruins and built clusters of houses following the characteristic structure of an Islamic house.

The layout of the irrigated areas, both rural and urban, is recognisable because it is the result of social and technological choices. But irrigated agriculture was not the only option in Al-Andalus. Rainfed agriculture is supposed to have been the main form of agriculture in large areas of the centre and west of the peninsula, although the field systems have been scarcely identified. In regions where irrigation was the preferred option, rainfed crops were complementary. In regions where dry farming was the only possible agriculture, there were settlement networks linked to livestock breeding and to droveways and pasture areas. The original selections made by the Berber and Arab farmers can still be recognized despite the expansion that has mainly taken place since modern times. However, the more recent and destructive capitalist agriculture is erasing the last vestiges of the Andalusi agricultural landscape.

This article is an overview of the research carried out in the last 30 years into the peasantry and their cultivated areas in the early-medieval societies in the north of the Iberian Peninsula and al-Andalus. Special attention is paid to the interpretations archaeologists make of the archaeological record. Approaches from two distinct perspectives are analysed, these being the excavation of settlements, and the archaeology of agrarian spaces. Both approaches do not usually come together in the research. It is increasingly clear that the 8th century was a turning point in the forms of peasant settlement and the creation of new cultivated areas. The consolidation of the migration in al-Andalus or the new forms of peasant settlement that arose from the end of the 7th century in the north of the Peninsula were essential for the later urban development. This development is clo...

Detailed mapping has been carried out in order to describe how these cultivated areas were organized. Modern hydraulic technology and infrastructures, such as the big canals built in banks and the regulation of the river flow by means of large dams have deeply transformed the agricultural landscape. Nevertheless, it is still possible to recognize the ancient boundaries and plot morphology of some of the cultivated areas, as well as the remains of drainage and irrigation channels that came not from the river but from the mountains. In the Andalusi period, field systems, always located in the vicinity of rural settlements and near the madîna of Tortosa, formed compact and discon...

Research paper thumbnail of Archaeological survey on a watermill in Ibiza

Barceló and his research group at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The first condition they stablished is that mills have to be seen as a part of a whole hydraulic system. Most of this sys- tems were analyzed on the three main Balearic islands and, then, in Valencia too. This survey on the watermills allowed to observe trends on the situation of the milling engines in the net of dams, channels, orchards ant other elements belonging the hydraulic systems: generally islamic watermills were built at the end of the main channel. This poster presents the results in the excavation of the remains of a watermill — called Es Molinot — standing at the end of a hydraulic system called Torrent de ses Fonts, on Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Ibiza island. The situation of the watermill would indicate an islamic chronology, on the contrary, other evidences, as the fact that the water came from an independent own channel, might be the sign of a more recent date of construction. The main objective is to establish a chronology throw archaeological materials. Being islamic, Es Molinot would be on the same trend than the other studied watermills, but if it is dated on a later time it might be a proof of the transmission of one technical solution by personal interchange of knowledge, or by imitation. In the case of a post-Islamic chronology the constructive characteristics of this mill could be used to date two other very similar mills located in different places of the island.

The foundation of the town of Puigcerdà (end of the 12th century) was carried out in an already feudalized space and it can even be said that this foundation represents a destabilizing intrusion in the previous organization of production and the rural space of this . sector of Cerdanya, given the numerous concessions made by the nascent monarchy to the inhabitants of Puigcerdà on the free use of pastures and water.

Destruction and Construcion of Societies offers a multi-perspective view of the filiation of different colonial and settler colonial experiences, from the Medieval Iberian Peninsula to the early Modern Americas. All the articles in the volume refer the reader to colonial orders that extended over time, that substantially reduced indigenous populations, that imposed new productive strategies and created new social hierarchies. The ideological background and how conquests were organised; the treatment given to the conquered lands and people; the political organisations, and the old and new agricultural systems are issues discussed in this volume.
