A Case Study of the Middle Kingdom Standard Class Coffin: The Coffin of Yi at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
Hilo Sugita, Indiana University, Bloomington
The Middle Kingdom coffins store much information about the coffin owners. This time period saw a rapid, new development in coffin decorations. Rectangular coffins began to have horizontal and vertical inscription bands on the exterior walls, which create canonical, yet distinctive patterns assigned to certain regions and/or time periods. Not only the provenance and the time period but also the socio-economic status of coffin owners can be deduced. Although a coffin was an expensive commodity, not only the royal and the elite, but also lower status individuals wished to own such funerary equipment in order to better prepare for the afterlife. Those who could afford them acquired the most desirable coffin they could. Depending on the individual’s socioeconomic status, the quality of coffin could vary. The proposed poster would showcase a study of a non-royal coffin from the Middle Kingdom, A.1287-2 in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The coffin was donated by a developer to the museum in 1928 as part of the Janss Collection. For the past decades, unfortunately, the coffin had been lost track of, and was recently re-discovered by the museum curators. Due to the poor documentation and inadequate study, little has been known about this previously forgotten coffin. For its investigation, the major studies by Harco Willems on what-he-called ‘standard class’ coffins as well as the methods developed by Kathlyn Cooney in her studies of socio-economic values of ancient Egyptian funerary arts are greatly utilized. By examining the coffin from the following perspectives – provenance, time period, choice of texts, and socio-economic status reflected in the qualities of wood, carpentry, paint and color, draftsmanship, and hieroglyphic inscriptions – we can draw conclusions about the identity of its former owner. It is suggested that the coffin belongs to a woman named Yi, who lived in the early to mid Twelfth Dynasty. Although the inscriptions are poorly written and show unusual patterns, including the choice of deities mentioned in the texts, her coffin itself is well-constructed and made of expensive imported cedar. The owner of A.1287-2, Yi, was possibly a wealthy woman from the upper middle class.

Entries for 10 Egyptian objects from Museum August Kestner, Hannover / Germany (Cat. I.9 - I.17), and Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden / The Netherlands (Cat. I.8) in the beautiful publication (Schriftenreihe des Landesmuseums Natur und Mensch, Heft 63) accompanying the cross-cultural exhibition "Tierisch moralisch. Die Welt der Fabel in Orient und Okzident" at Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch Oldenburg / Germany (22 February - 1 June 2009). - For the relevant essay, see differendt PDF. - Egyptian stories in which animals act like humans are known from written sources only as late as the 2nd century AD (e.g. the famous Demotic papyrus Leiden AMS 75 - was part of the exhibition!). However, similar stories existed in Pharaonic Egypt for thousands of years. Proof are animal stories of which only "pictorial versions" are preserved (e.g. the "other side" of the famous pornographical papyrus Turin 55001 or numerous ostraca). Particularely fascinating in this respect is the purely "pictorial story" at Antikenmuseum Basel (Ae 1081) painted on stuccoed linnen from the New Kingdom (c. 1200 BC), which therefore is the focus of the essay. The text of this fairly complex animal story can unfortunaltely not be reconstructed. The existence of this purely pictorial story shows well that fables existed in Pharonic Egypt for millenia, however, only in oral transmission which - when not written down at one point AND also preserved - got lost ... likely forever. - (in German)

This new identification has in the meantime been confirmed (e.g. by the Egyptologist Christian Bayer, Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum, Hildesheim); p. 90-97 "DOUBLE 'SHABTI ON BIER' OF THE PRINCES KHAEMWASE AND RAMESSU, SONS OF RAMESSES II" discusses this fabulous object and compares it to a "shabti on bier" of the prince Thutmose, son of Amenhotep III (Berlin Egyptian Museum, acq. no. Museums have been filling their shelves with Egyptian artifacts for over 200 years. Every institution wanted
to have a little piece of the Orient in them. The Archaeological Museum in Zagreb bought a small, but very peculiar collection from the family of Franz Koller in 1868. Over 2200 items of original Egyptian origin now reside in Zagreb. The permanent exhibit includes bronze statuttes of gods, scarabs, papyri, several mummies, shabtis figures and many more. Its history in the museum is very long, as is the research that was conducted
on it. From the first director Šime Ljubic to the present-day curator Igor Uranic the collection has fascinated
and attracted all sorts of visitors, including scientists, and is a valuable jewel in the Zagreb Museum.

Text at the back of the book:

The most of Croatian Oriental and Ancient Egyptian collections were found during the 19th and early 20th century. Currently in Croatian museum and private collections great number of Ancient Egyptian antiquities are kept. The number can be estimated between four and five thousand. The biggest and the best known collection is kept in the Archaeological museum in Zagreb (ex-National museum). It was found in the early 1860’s from the great number of private collectors, noblemen, noble families, wealthy citizens etc. (e.g. Mihael Barić, Franjo Jordan, Josip Forz Kožalić, Juraj Haulik, Gustav Koritić …). Other museums also have the great number of Ancient Egyptian artefacts which were mostly donated to those institutions by local Maecenas and merchants who travelled to Egypt and Orient (e.g. Ivo Nordeli, brothers Amerling, noble family Pasthory-Varady etc.). In this paper author will give short overview of genesis of these collections with known details of their donators. The whole subject is part of my long study of the Ancient Egyptian collections in Croatian museum and private collections which started in 1999.

In this article authors will study and analyze the group of shabtis from the collection of the Museum of Oriental Civilizations in Zolochiv, Lviv region (Ukraine). The origin of these artifacts is uncertain. At least three of them came to the museum from the private collections (Lubomirski, Pininski). We cannot be sure if they were bought in Egypt or somewhere else.

From 21 June to 6 November 2011, the Museum August Kestner Hannover showed the special exhibition “Lost! Die Ägypten-Sammlung und ihre (Kriegs-)Verluste,” which was organized in close cooperation with the Stadtarchiv Hannover (the main archive of the City of Hannover). The exhibition and its catalogue intended to introduce the public to 734 ancient Egyptian objects, about one third of the hold-ings at that time, that had been missing from the museum since World War II. These objects were lost immediately after World War II, when the storage facili-ties for Hannover’s art holdings were plundered.

He was able to collect more than four hundred objects, part of them on the advice of Ernesto Schiaparelli, the first Director of the Egyptian Museum in Florence (1884) and from 1894 of the Turin Museum.

One of the smaller but in the same time one of the most interesting Egyptian collections in Croatia is placed in Varaždin. Originally the collection was in the 19th century in the possession of the noble family Pasthory-Varady. In 1920's these artefacts came in the possession of the Museum of the City of Varaždin.
There are six artefacts in the collection: one clay cup from late Badari or Naqada I period, one limestone funeral stele of Mery-Mery who was «military scribe, of the Lord of two lands» and «overseer of domain» of Sitamun, the daughter of Amenhotep III, and whole set of four canopic jars from 26th Saite dynasty (reign of Psamtek I). The authors analyse the artefacts from the Museum of the City of Varaždin (history of the collection; basic information of the objects: inventory numbers, material, dimensions, bibliography; description, transliteration and translation with 6 color plates).
