This theme could be said to cover all aspects of life and Al Tizon’s two articles, which lead off this edition, fit within that framework. However, the application of his two articles merges with the focus of the remaining four articles in that they have strong ramifications for ministry among the poor, oppressed and disenfranchised of today’s world—the segments of society from which the vast majority of Pentecostals and Charismatics are drawn.

Greg Heilser describes the plan and purpose of the book in his introduction. He makes is clear that Spirit-Led Preaching is more about a mind-set than a method (4). It is an encouragement to intentionally prepare and deliver our sermons under the leadership and power of the Holy Spirit. While considering preaching as an act of surrender, he expresses that book is designed to be a help for preachers in understanding how preaching is influenced by the Holy Spirit.

Rev. Dr. John Stott, a British scholar and pastor, is highly esteemed in the Christian evangelical tradition. He was a profound theologian who successfully integrated scholarship with preaching ministry. He embodied and espoused the ideals and tenets of evangelicalism. Both Stott and Billy Graham are the two people mostly responsible for the global appeal of evangelicalism. This paper aim to demonstrate that Stott embodied key tenets of Evangelicalism especially in regard to preaching and social concern and that his influence extends beyond the borders of Britain to Africa. In order to develop the thesis, the paper begins by a brief look at John Stott's biography. Second, the paper examines Stott's approach to, and theology of ministry focusing especially on his theology of preaching and social concern. This paper was presented to the EFKS Pulega Manukau i Sasae, Mafutaga o Aoao Fesosoani, that took place at the EFKS Papakura Hall, on February 15 & 16, 2013. It looks at giving a definition for Theology, and surveys the Gospels presentation of Jesus Christ. It also advises readers to always bear in mind the applicability of today's contexts and issues, and one's own preconceptions and prejudices. It is far from being exhaustive, but offers accessible tools in both Samoan and English, for anyone who wants to preach the Gospel, and preach Jesus Christ!

What is Preaching?
This essay explains that preaching is the faithful transmission of God’s word from the Bible, to others. It does so by first highlighting some examples found in Scripture of people who were preaching, and noting that they were not speaking their own words but rather the words that God had given them.
It explains the purpose and goal of preaching is to bring about repentance which leads to the salvation of the lost, growth and edification of believers and enrichment of the church.
The essay shows how expository preaching is the only way to remain faithful to the meaning and intent of the Scriptures.

This article reflects upon preaching Old Testament texts from the Revised Common Lectionary in light of a recent three-year experiment of favoring the Old Testament readings for sermon development. Old Testament texts in the lectionary experience re-contextualization due to their appropriation as supporting material for the Synoptic Gospel readings and the metanarrative of the “church year.” Countering the resulting transformation or loss of meaning calls for attention to canonical context, including the trajectory that Old Testament texts themselves set toward New Testament themes.

The author of the article observes that in the Romanian Pentecostal preaching application prevails at the expense of theological grounds. Therefore, in this article he approaches three aspects of the Christian life that are at stake when is growing. The spiritual areas affected by the imbalance between theology and application in preaching are: knowledge of God in Christ, discernment of cardinal values of the Kingdom of God and the testimony of Christ in the world.

Deeper Waters is a sermon collection—but also a manifesto. Its sermons sound forth a call for Christian preaching that is evangelical and emancipatory: unashamed of the good news about Christ's death and resurrection and resolute in resistance to white supremacy, male domination, and redemptive violence. The author, pastor Nibs Stroupe, is a white son of the segregated South, nurtured in its twin traditions of anti-black white racism and Christian faith. But through the courageous witness of black Americans engaged in the Civil Rights movement, Stroupe experienced conversion to a new theological vision. God's loving claim on humanity in Jesus Christ abolishes oppressive idols and breaks down dividing barriers. This conviction propelled Nibs into a lifelong ministry of gospel proclamation and antiracist struggle. For thirty-four years, Stroupe pastored at Oakhurst Presbyterian Church, a multiracial congregation in metropolitan Atlanta. The sermons of this collection present the mature fruit of that ministry, and they offer a gift and example to the next generation of preachers and workers summoned as witnesses of Jesus Christ to the American context.

Prophetic texts are difficult to preach from. The stern warnings, calls to repentance, promises, tears and threats of the Biblical prophets that once moved the nation of Israel, now often seem irrelevant or simply odd, extreme, or fanatical to modern day listeners. The vitality and urgency with which the prophets spoke and pleaded with the people on behalf of their God, simply do not communicate easily to people far removed from those situations. The problem is amplified when one considers the church’s task to continue to preach prophetically into situations of today. Can there still be a new prophetic word, after the final Word of God, spoken in these last days, through the Son (Heb.1:1)? What is the relationship between the threatened judgements of God that we find in the prophetic texts and the new context of the church that is founded on the Good News of salvation through Jesus? How can the preacher apply the prophetic word from God within the radically different socio, cultural, political, historical and theological contexts of today?

The author of this article offers some practical suggestions for the improvement of the relevancy of preaching in its Romanian Evangelical context. The first part of the paper present the actual state of preaching in the Romanian Evangelical churches, by discussing some of its positive features – its constant presence in academic and liturgical context, charismatic emphasis and prayer saturation – and some of its shortcomings, like scarce opportunities in pursuing higher degrees in preaching, unconcern about engaging culture and the less organised nature of the preaching activity.
The second part of the present paper contains some new challenges for the Romanian Evangelical preaching, like the people’s quest for instant practical solutions, the influence of image-based education, the task of expressing biblical truth in a relevant language for the new generation; not least the author suggests some necessary homiletical improvements for a relevant preaching in the Romanian Evangelical churches.

This article explores the similarities and differences between the process followed to develop a sermon and that followed to develop a cartoon. It first examines the representation of the jester or clown in some recent publications by homileticians before describing the process of development of a sermon, as proposed by three homiletic sources from namely North America, South Africa and The Netherlands, respectively. The article describes the process followed in the development of a cartoon in a similar way. The article concludes by presenting some observations on the preacher as cartoonist with reference to the process followed in the development of a cartoon. It argues that the cartoonist may currently be viewed as a metaphor for a preacher that could enrich existing images of the preacher such as the clown or jester, especially because of the similarities in the processes for writing/preparing a sermon and drawing a cartoon.

Stewardship is not a popular subject. As Scott Rodin quips, “Pastors do not like to preach about it, nor do parishioners like to hear about it; few people write about it and even less read about it.”2 Its unpopularity has to do with the unfortunate fact that people, of which Christians are no exception, believe that their wealth is theirs to do with it what they deem best for their lives. The pursuit of the good life of upward mobility, comfort, security and luxury has spread well beyond the western nations and affected many Asian countries as well and many have been culturally conditioned to believe that this domain belongs privately to each person or church, and that they have the right to do whatever they please with their hard earned wealth. In America, where I live and serve, this is known as pursuing the “American Dream.”
