Seeds of onion (Allium cepa L.) were obtained from Main Vegetable Research Station, Anand Agricultural University, Anand. The initial viability of the seeds were ascertained through germination tests conducted in Laboratory of Seed Technology, Department of Agricultural Botany, B. A. College of Agriculture, Anand Agricultural University, Gujarat. The experiment was conducted for 27 months during the years, 2010-2012. The experiment was designed as factorial complete random design with two replications. The present work has been carried out to find the effect of different storage materials such as plastic bags, paper and cloth bags at different storage periods i e 3, 6 and 9 months. The study revealed that the germination percentage gradually decreased with increase in germination period. The seeds stored in plastic bags showed highest germination compared to paper bags and cloth. One of the major constraints in onion cultivation is the limited availability of vigorous seeds at the t...

In the recent efflorescence of studies on ‘global’ textile trades, eastern Africa has been mostly conspicuous for its absence. This special volume of Textile History seeks to redress this situation by mapping many of the major historic textile trades of this vast area, and demonstrating their importance to the global story. The introduction provides the rationale for the volume, positions the textile trades of eastern Africa over the longue durée and connects them to wider geographical and conceptual frameworks, and presents its five essays, contextualizing them within the unfolding history of the western Indian Ocean and its several ‘cloth zones’, while elucidating their potential contributions to the field.

Discharges of clay sealings were found in the palace built by the Meroitic king Natakamani at the foot of Jebel Barkal (Sudan). The clay sealings were in two rooms adjacent to the secondary entrance of the palace. The prints of the objects that were sealed are still visible on the inside of the dried clay sealings : they can be mostly referred to amphorae and wooden chests, but other types of containers can also be recognised, such as cloth or leather bags, straw baskets and the locks of the storage-rooms in which all these goods were kept. The motifs on the clay sealings are only figurative and can be referred to the major religious and royal themes. The practice of sealing containers and storage rooms seems to point to an archaic administrative sistem which took place in an environment, such as the Meroitic state, where writing was not popular and limited to rare political and religious occasions.

We expand multitouch tabletop information exploration by placing 2D information on a physically-based cloth in a shallow 3D viewing environment. Instead of offering 2D information on a rigid window or screen, we place our information on a soft flexible cloth that can be draped, pulled, stretched, and folded with multiple fingers and hands, supporting any number of information views. Combining our multitouch flexible information cloth with simple manipulable objects provides a physically-based information viewing environment that ...

The synthesis in one pot(1) of opposing 'rose petal' and 'lotus leaf' superhydrophobic materials from commercially available superhydrophilic cloth substrates of varying texture is described for the first time. Surfaces of 'rough' textured cloth and 'smooth' textured cloth were simultaneously rendered superhydrophobic by growing zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods by a hydrothermal process in the same chemical bath. Contact angle hysteresis and water pendant drop tests revealed strong water adhesion to ZnO microrod-treated rough cloth. The combination of water contact angle >150° and strong adhesion is indicative of the 'rose petal effect' with potential for water pinning. Smooth cloth with ZnO nanorods exhibited no adhesion to water droplets with facilitative roll-off. The combination of water contact angle >150° and weak to no adhesion with water is indicative of the 'lotus leaf effect' with potential for self-cleaning. Pendant water drop tests indicated cohesive failure of water on rough cloth coated with ZnO nanorods. Natural rose petals demonstrated adhesive failure between the petal surface and water droplet. A parsimonious explanation is presented. We also describe the development of superhydrophobic clothes without the need for special conditions or further chemical modification.
