The use of digital technologies in healthcare is changing how medical treatments are developed by researchers, applied/practiced by medical professionals and experienced by patients. This article argues that a defining feature of this disruption is the emergence of new medical "apps" that leverage algorithm-based AI systems. As the use of such apps and AI wearables goes mainstream and new players-notably "Super Platforms" with digital rather than a medical expertise-enter the healthcare sector, the traditional means of providing medical services will be further transformed. These developments pose several challenges for regulators and other policymakers, most obviously, in the context of privacy and data protection. Here, we examine how the emerging field of Legal Design can provide a more transparent infrastructure that embeds relevant legal protections in the user interfaces of healthcare products and services. Such a user interface (UI) focused Privacy-by-Design approach offers a number of advantages, most obviously greater transparency, accountability and (consequently) human choice. The article offers several realworld examples of design patterns that illustrate the value of UI focused Privacy-by-Design in protecting individuals' sensitive information, enabling people to make choices and retain control of their personal data. The article concludes with some examples and reflects on the challenges specific to implementing Legal Design in an eHealth context.

Recently, the population of the world has increased along with health problems. Diabetes mellitus disease as an example causes issues to the health of many patients globally. The task of this chapter is to develop a dynamic and intelligent decision support system for patients with different diseases, and it aims at examining machine-learning techniques supported by optimization techniques. Artificial neural networks have been used in healthcare for several decades. Most research works utilize multilayer layer perceptron (MLP) trained with back propagation (BP) learning algorithm to achieve diabetes mellitus classification. Nonetheless, MLP has some drawbacks, such as, convergence, which can be slow; local minima can affect the training process. It is hard to scale and cannot be used with time series data sets. To overcome these drawbacks, long short-term memory (LSTM) is suggested, which is a more advanced form of recurrent neural networks. In this chapter, adaptable LSTM trained with two optimizing algorithms instead of the back propagation learning algorithm is presented. The optimization algorithms are biogeography-based optimization (BBO) and genetic algorithm (GA). Dataset is collected locally and another benchmark dataset is used as well. Finally, the datasets fed into adaptable models; LSTM with BBO (LSTMBBO) and LSTM with GA (LSTMGA) for classification purposes. The experimental and testing results are compared and they are promising. This system helps physicians and doctors to provide proper health treatment for patients with diabetes mellitus. Details of source code and implementation of our system can be obtained in the following link "

The implementation of quality management strategies is a global phenomenon, particularly in organizations in developing countries, who have used different quality management systems to improve the quality of their services and to satisfy their customers. In the healthcare sector, the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) philosophy can help to enhance patient safety and help healthcare organizations improve performance and adopt cost-effective management practices. This research paper aims to identify and measure the Critical Successful Factors (CSFs) that affecting the implementation of TQM in hospitals. A literature review on TQM was examined to identify the CSFs for its implementation in healthcare between 2010 and 2020. In addition, this study employed quantitative methods to achieve its research objectives. A questionnaire was designed to gather empirical data from senior staff in hospitals adopting a self-administered technique to measure the CSFs that affecting TQM...

The lack of effective communication and shared decision-making between key health actors in Liberia’s fragile healthcare system has prompted this interpretive qualitative phenomenological study. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the communication between healthcare and non-healthcare providers to include: an exploration of their strategies to improve healthcare delivery, the conditions under which they provided health care services despite belonging to different types of institutions, and the communication mechanisms they used to meet the needs of Liberia’s fragile healthcare system. This study used a semi-structured qualitative interview for data collection to address the research questions. The data were collected using a sample consisting of managers, purposefully selected from leading healthcare and non-healthcare organizations located in Monrovia, Liberia. Ten managers were selected from the following healthcare organizations: John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Eternal Love Winning Africa Hospital, Redemption Hospital, St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital, Cooper Adventist Hospital, Wein Town Community Clinic, E. S. Grant Mental Health Hospital, A. M. E. University Clinic, Hope For Women International Health Center, and James N. Davis, Jr. Memorial Hospital. Ten managers also were selected from the following non-healthcare organizations: Government of Liberia–Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, United Nations Development Program, United States Agency for International Development, World Bank, United Nations High Commission For Refugees, Catholic Relief Agency, Clinton Health Access Initiatives, National Social Security and Welfare Corporation, Ministry of Agriculture, and the United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS. Each manager was informed regarding the nature and purpose of the study; had the choice freely to participate without coercion; and was selected based on his or her executive experience and competency, including supervision, strategic policy development and implementation, and program planning and administration skills. Participating organizations were asked to write a letter of endorsement to their selected managers requesting them to participate in the study. By establishing effective communication links between healthcare and non-healthcare organizations, strategies may be developed, and recommendations will be offered to strengthen Liberia’s fragile healthcare system, with emphasis placed on making shared decisions that consider the social determinants of health.

The rapid growth of multiple diverse languages and cultures - mainly brought on through the recent surge in immigration - in the United States has given rise to a greater population of non-English speaking patients in hospitals. This, coupled with a lack of cultural competence on behalf of hospitals and low health literacy among limited English-speaking proficiency (LEP) patients, has ignited a decline in the quality of healthcare delivered to LEP patients.

The adoption of systems-focused risk assessment techniques has not led to measurable improvement in the rate of patient harm. Why? In part, because these tools focus solely on understanding problems, and provide no direct support for designing and managing solutions (i.e., risk control). This second installment of a 2-part series on rebalancing risk management describes a structured approach to bridging this gap: The Active Risk Control (ARC) Toolkit. A pilot study is presented to show how ARC Toolkit can improve the quality of risk management practice.

Information technology has penetrated so much in the field of “finance” but healthcare has been last to adopt the technology for its use. The aspects of Information Technology that can make it’s adoption business worthy for hospitals and practices as relevant to India is discussed. Information technology helps take healthcare to the masses, minimizes documentation ‘errors’ when standardized and smoothens the ‘workflow’ in healthcare. But information technology has to be implemented with care making sure it wraps around your hospital’s workflow and due care must be taken about the human factors. Unless the ‘frontline’ personnel - Doctors, Nurses and Frot end employees are comfortable and work with the health information technology in unison, the entire exercise might turn futile. Healthcare Information technology should be integrated into hospital or practice and must not be isolated. Big data in healthcare is picking up and healthcare analytics is the future from business point of v...

Healthcare system is rapidly transitioning from a traditional health-center and specialist-focused model to a more scattered, patient-centric model. Medical Internet of Things (MIoT) provides machine-to-machine contact and real-time intervention solutions, which in the near future will drastically revolutionize healthcare delivery, affordability, and reliability. The Medical Internet of Things (MIoT) is a new technology that aims to improve patient quality of life by allowing individualized e-health services irrespective of time or place. The Medical Internet of Things (MIoT), often known as healthcare IoT, is a network of medical devices and applications. MIoT applications are intimately linked to sensitive healthcare services, particularly because they manage sensitive patient information such as names, health records, addresses, and health problems. The key problem in the MIoT area is to protect the confidentiality and privacy of patients without compromising security. The security and privacy of data acquired from MIoT devices, either while transmission to the cloud or while kept in the cloud, are key unsolved challenges, as this data is heavy, sensitive, and require a high level of security. We examine present security and privacy challenges, as well as security and privacy needs connected to data flow in the MIoT, as well as technical shortcomings and research issues for future work, in this paper. Finally, we can state that the growing adoption of the MIoT in recent years has brought enormous benefits to both medical organizations and their patients.

The purpose of this study is to determine the strategic management and the healthcare sector in Abu Dhabi (SEHA) from the theoretical perspective. Although an empirical research is a way of gaining knowledge by means of direct and indirect observation or experience, however, this research will add on the understandings from the view of theoretical review as well. To execute that, a number of theories put forward, upon which the theoretical framework is premised; these are: the theoretical model of strategic planning in healthcare organizations, strategy content in strategic planning model (SPM), environment(s) in strategic planning model, mission in strategic planning model, human resources management (HRM) in strategic planning model etc. The theoretical review revealed that the available limited research lacks validation through empirical research. This has brought about new knowledge to the researchers which may be tested or contested due to country conditions being different to that of Abu Dhabi or laps of time has altered the findings as of a future date. Future researchers could identify emerging variables that may alter the significance of variables tested which may lead to completely new discoveries as to what contributes to the success of healthcare.

Risk assessment, by itself, does nothing to reduce risk or improve safety. It can only change outcomes by informing the design and management of effective risk control interventions. But current practice in healthcare risk management suffers from an almost complete lack of support for risk control. This first installment of a 2-part series on rebalancing risk management describes a new framework to guide risk control practice: The Process for Active Risk Control.

Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to determine the toxic leadership perceptions of health care workers and to reveal whether the evaluations of the workers about toxic leadership sub-dimension differ according to individual and demographic characteristics or not. Another purpose of the study is to evaluate whether a scale that measures toxic leadership, validity and reliability revealed in other sectors can be used in the health care sector or not. Design/methodology/approach: The population of the study covers doctors, nurses and other health care workers who work in a state hospital operating in the province of Ankara, Turkey. The study was performed by convenience sampling. The data collection period covers between January-March 2016 and 292 usable surveys are attained. In order to reveal whether the evaluations of health care workers about toxic leadership and sub-dimensions differentiate or not in terms of individual and demographic characteristics, significance test of the difference between two means and one way analysis of variance were used. Findings: As a result of the conducted analyses, it was found that the scale used in the study was valid and reliable for health care sector as well. Additionally, it was revealed that toxic leadership perceptions of the participants had statistically significant differences in each of four dimensions in line with the age and total working experience, selfishness and negative state dimensions according to their profession. Originality/value: The lack studies examining the toxic leadership in the health sector in Turkey is the most important value of this study.

A chat bot is an AI tool that interprets information provided by humans and responds accordingly. It is used to carry out tasks like mimic human behavior. Many of the chat bot conversations between humans and machines are repetitive. Instead of just talking to one another, a chat bot can communicate with the outside world by analyzing the user's needs and actions. Having a chat bot assistant that can help users complete their tasks makes them feel like they're doing something right. It eliminates the user's need to do the work for them. This idea has been proposed to introduce a dual-agent system that will allow users to interact with the chat bot without leaving the human interaction. It can make decisions on behalf of the user, which reduces the user's efforts in carrying out a task. This concept is demonstrated in our study. The concept is to create a chat bot that can diagnose a health issue & provide basic information before reaching out to a doctor. I.

Background: This project work focuses on the effect of motivation as a tool for increasing employee efficiency and productivity in selected mission hospital in Enugu State. Objectives: The objectives of this work was to examine the effect of motivation as a tool for increasing employee efficiency and productivity; to examine the promotional reward used by the organizational management in motivating its employee. Design: A descriptive survey design was employed for the study. Methods: Data were collected with a self-structured five (5) point rating Likert scale format questionnaire, and analyzed using descriptive statistical tools for the biographic data and research questions; and the null hypothesis (Ho) was tested using chi-square (X 2). Results: From the analysis, it was revealed that as determinants to motivating employees in an organization, recognition, praises and delegation of authority to employees will influence their productivity from seemingly positive direction. Conclusion: From the research carried out, there are other factors that can fight against de-motivation. These hygiene factors of motivation include: Promotion, Provision of better living condition/ environment to employees, Transport and feeding allowances, Friendly/good relationship between employers and employees. It was concluded that recognition, praises and delegation of authority to employees influence their productivity from seemingly positive direction; monthly allowance and regular payment of salaries to employees do not necessarily increase their performance.

Workload analysis is a human resource planning activity to determine of staff needs so organization goals can be achieved. Human resources planning at Rumah Sakit Bedah Surabaya is done periodically using Workload Indicator Staff Need (WISN), this method is subjective. Based on the calculation using the WISN method, there is a discrepancy between the number of existing and the required staff, including in the Medical Record Unit of Rumah Sakit Bedah Surabaya. There is an excess of medical record staff that will impact on employee productivity. Therefore, so important to measure objective workload based on real condition in the fi eld. There are several methods that can be used to analyze the objective workload, one of them is Full Time Equivalent (FTE). Data on the workload is obtained by interview and daily log which will be analyzed and converted into FTE index. Based on the results of the analysis it is found that the workload of supervisor and medical recorder of morning shift is normal, but for the shift of the afternoon, night and helper are underload. The medical record staff owned by Rumah Sakit Bedah Surabaya has been suffi cient to handle the patient's medical record needs

Although it is probably the best-known prospective hazard analysis (PHA) tool, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is far from the only option available. This article introduces one of the alternatives: The structured what-if technique (SWIFT). SWIFT is a flexible, high-level risk identification technique that can be used on a stand-alone basis, or as part of a staged approach to make more efficient use of bottom-up methods like FMEA. In this article we describe the method, assess the evidence related to its use in healthcare with the use of a systematic literature review, and suggest ways in which it could be better adapted for use in the healthcare industry. Based on the limited evidence available, it appears that healthcare workers find it easy to learn, easy to use, and credible. Especially when used as part of a staged approach, SWIFT appears capable of playing a useful role as component of the PHA armamentarium.

"The ‘5 whys’ technique is one of the most widely taught approaches to root-cause analysis (RCA) in healthcare. Its use is promoted by the WHO,1 the English National Health Service, [2] the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, [3] the Joint Commission [4] and many other organisations in the field of healthcare quality and safety. Like most such tools, though, its popularity is not the result of any evidence that it is effective. [5–8]"
....
"But the real problem with ‘5 whys’ is not how it is used in RCA, but rather that it so grossly oversimplifies the process of problem exploration that it should not be used at all. It forces users down a single analytical pathway for any given problem,[13] insists on a single root cause as the target for solutions [9 ,13 ,20] and assumes that the most distal link on the causal pathway (the fifth ‘why’) is inherently the most effective and efficient place to intervene."

This study investigates the service marketing mix (7Ps) affecting patient satisfaction in clinics, Thailand. The link between variables to see the increasing healthcare quality management to respond to patients' needs and expectations were tested. The clinics in Thailand were studied to get more clarification of the relationship in this sector. The online questionnaires were used from the previous studies that have validity. The service marketing mix includes people, price, place (location), promotion, product (services), process, and physical evidence whereas the outcome variable is patient satisfaction. The results reveal that process is the most significant predictor, followed by people, price, product (services), physical evidence, and place (location), respectively. Only promotion is not significantly influenced patient satisfaction.
