Natural disasters are inevitable to the biodiversity. Disasters such as flood, tsunami and tornadoes could be brutal, harsh and devastating. In Australia, flooding is a major issue experienced by different parts of the country. In such crisis, delays in evacuation could decide the life and death of the people living in those regions. Congestion management could become a mammoth task if there are no steps taken before such situations. In the past to manage congestion in such circumstances, many strategies were utilised such as converting the road shoulders to extra lanes or changing the road geometry by adding more lanes. However, expansion of road to resolving congestion problems is not considered a viable option nowadays. The authorities avoid this option due to many reasons, such as lack of financial support and land space. They tend to focus their attention on optimising the current resources they possess and use traffic signals to overcome congestion problems. Traffic Signal Man...

Pulmonary hypertension (PHTN) is associated with increased post-procedure morbidity and mortality. Pre-procedure echocardiography (ECHO) is a widely used tool for evaluation of these patients, but its accuracy in predicting post-procedure outcomes is unproven. Self-reported exercise tolerance has not been evaluated for operative risk stratification of PHTN patients. We analyzed whether self-reported exercise tolerance predicts outcomes (hospital length-of-stay [LOS], mortality and morbidity) in PHTN patients (WHO Class I-V) undergoing anesthesia and surgery. We reviewed 550 non-cardiac, non-obstetric procedures performed on 370 PHTN patients at a single institution between 2007 and 2013. All patients had cardiac ECHO documented within 1 year prior to the procedure. Pre-procedure comorbidities and ECHO data were collected. Functional status (< or ≥ 4 metabolic equivalents of task [METs]) was assigned based on responses to standard patient interview questions during the pre-anesthe...

Characteristics of a wireless communication channel are subjected to a large scale deterioration process, referred to as the problem of fading. This paper discusses different techniques for mitigating the fading problems. One solution to the problem is to add a fading margin on the transmitter, but it is not an effective solution. The other solution is to use an alternative statistical behavior of fading channels (applying the basic concepts of diversity), which use two or more inputs on the receiver to ensure the correlation of signal. So, the diversity technique is used to improve system performance in fading channels. Instead of transmitting and receiving the desired signal through one channel, we have L copies of desired signal transferred over M different channels. This paper presents analytical results of the probability of error for diversity techniques which use Rayleigh Fading Channel for BPSK modulation.

Głównym celem artykułu jest analiza doświadczenia tragiczności ludzkiej egzystencji. Każdy człowiek jest sumą przeszłych pokoleń. W naszym kraju w każdej jednostce ludzkiej drzemie tradycja ludzi pierwotnych, doświadczenie wieków średnich, dymy krematoriów Oświęcimia i długi okres komunistycznej dominacji Wielkiego Brata. Tragiczność naszej egzystencji potrafi być także twórcza. Głębokie i kreatywne przeżywanie świata powinno stanowić filar cywilizacji przyszłości zbudowanej na miłości.

Capacity definition recognises that only traverse point or uniform section of roadway capacity can be estimated. Since midblock median U-turn opening is a nonuniform infrastructure, a novel capacity estimation method is needed. The paper proposes sectioning models for estimating U-turn capacity based on dynamics and regression theory. Surveyed U-turn roadway was divided into three sections (entry, middle curve, and exit). Traffic data for each section and adjoining priority traffic stream were collected continually for eight weeks. After modifying passenger car values, ensuing traffic flows and computed densities were used to develop capacity model for entry and middle curve. Regression models where traffic flows from the exit section were taken as the dependent variables and flows from the priority stream were taken as independent variable were used to model capacity for the exit section. Sensitivity analysis shows that the proposed models can produce reliable and accurate results....

Background: This paper fills an important gap in the on-going road lighting debate by investigating traffic stream deterioration during night-time rainfall. Introduction: The study carried out an investigation into the impact of night-time rainfall on traffic stream deterioration of two-lane roadways without lighting Methodology: In the rainfall impact studies, traffic volume, speed, vehicle type and headway data were collected at selected road segments in Akure, Nigeria. All surveyed roadways were within rain gauge catchment area of about 1km. Rainfall intensity was divided into three groups (light, moderate, and heavy). Dry weather data were used as a control parameter. Data Analysis: Stepwise data analysis is used for the ease of explanation and clarity. All model equations were tested for statistical fitness and deemed satisfactory for further analysis. Results: From the result, it is observed that rainfall intensityinfluences traffic flow at night-time. Conclusion: Based on the...

The paper investigated the extent to which rainfall influences the quality of service delivery at multilane roundabouts using a novel quality of service approach. Quality of service is defined as how well roundabouts operate based on road users and road providers’ perception of service quality. Delay and reserve capacity were used respectively as proxies for road users and road providers’ perception of service quality. The entry and circulating traffic data were recorded continuously for eight weeks under dry, light, moderate, and heavy rainfall weather conditions at each surveyed roundabout, then collated, analysed and compared. Linear regression with dummy variable was used to model the roundabout entry capacity and a corrector factor was added to modify the regression function. The corrector factor considered different entry radii and entry angles of surveyed roundabouts. Multi-criteria quality of service table with travel time as proxy for road users and speed as proxy for road ...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare two groups in postoperative recovery, whether there were any complications and whether the length of their hospital stay differed. One group received intraoperatively a combination of crystalloids and a small colloid dose, while the other group received only the crystalloids intraoperatively. METHODS: This randomized prospective study included 80 patients with colorectal cancer prepared for major elective colorectal surgery. The patients were randomly assigned to either the control group (CG) which received only crystalloid solutions intraoperatively or to the research group (RG) which received a combination of colloid and crystalloid solutions. Regional and general endotracheal anesthesia techniques were combined in all patients. Goal-directed fluid therapy was administered to patients in both groups. After extubation, patients were transferred in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). We measured the administered fluids, fluid balance, the...

The use of bicycles as a means of transport in journey-to-work trips is widespread in North West Europe. In countries such as The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark there is a tradition for research concerning bicycle traffic. For reasons of safety and convenience special cycle tracks alongside vehicle lanes are often provided where possible. Where such tracks exist through signalized intersections cyclists create problems for right turning vehicles in the same manner as do pedestrians using a pedestrian crossing. Cyclists are often much more numerous than pedestrians along main arterials. Therefore, there is a need for a method for estimating the effect on capacity of the volume of cycle traffic. Only a few methods exist (e.g. Tepley (1990)).

Late onset sepsis (LOS) contributes to mortality and morbidity in preterm infants. We tested the hypotheses that microbes causing LOS originate from the gut, and that distortions in the gut microbial community increases subsequent risk of LOS. We examined the gut microbial community in prospectively collected stool samples from preterm infants with LOS and an equal number of age-matched controls at two sites (Cincinnati, OH and Birmingham, AL), by sequencing the bacterial 16S rDNA. We confirmed our findings in a subset of infants by whole genome shotgun sequencing, and analyzed the data using R and LEfSe. Infants with LOS in Cincinnati, as compared to controls, had less abundant Actinobacteria in the first samples after birth (median 18 days before sepsis onset), and less abundant Pseudomonadales in the last samples collected prior to LOS (median 8 days before sepsis onset). Infants with LOS in Birmingham, as compared to controls, had no differences identified in the first sample mi...

Pedestrian crossings signify a right of way for pedestrians over vehicles that allows pedestrians to safely walk across the roads at grade. User-centred designs require the understanding the users to provide infrastructure that facilitates user needs. The speed of a pedestrians is influenced by their characteristics. Research around the world has analysed the pedestrian speeds based on gender, age and physical conditions of the pedestrians that affect walking speed (pregnancy or disabilities), carrying luggage. However, the impact of location of the crossing (mid-block or junction), time of the day (peak or off-peak) and surroundings (land use) is not investigated in depth. Research in Sri Lanka about pedestrian crossing facilities have used the pedestrian speeds on walkways for crossing designs. Data extracted from video camera footage at 11 different pedestrian crossings in Galle, Sri Lanka were analysed according to the above-stated scenarios to investigate their influence on the variation of crossing speeds of pedestrians. The difference in average crossing speed according to gender, land use, level of traffic and the location was revealed to be statistically significant. Average crossing speed of males (80.88 m/min) is faster than that of females (77.58 m/min). However, further analysis revealed that the crossing speed of school-aged females is higher than their male counterparts. While crossing speeds show a reducing trend with increasing age, middle-aged males cross faster than young females. These variations of average crossing speeds of different age-sex categories revealed to influence the variation of average crossing speeds at different land uses, as the composition of pedestrians on demand for crossing at these land uses were different. The study highlights the need for urban planners to consider these variations in speeds when designing pedestrian crossings.

Intersections are places where two or more highways intersect. Their performance dictates the performance of the rest of the traffic network. When two highways cannot intersect at right angles due to some geometric constraints, skewed intersection forms. Generally a traffic signal system is designed to control traffic movements at road intersections without considering the orientation of the intersection. Such an approach might lead to inaccurate assessment of operational performance of a signalised intersection because such a configuration influences turning radius and hence the vehicle’s negotiation speeds. This paper describes the result of a study carried out to evaluate the effect of orientation of a signalised intersection on the control delay to vehicular traffic. The evaluation was carried out using aaSIDRA software, which was calibrated using the data collected from site. Two models of skewed intersection based on a normal T–intersection were simulated at minor approach at ...

This paper presented a planar printed multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with a dimension of 100 x 45 mm2. It composed of two crescent shaped radiators placed symmetrically with respect to the ground plane. Neutralization line applied to suppress mutual coupling. The proposed antenna examined both theoretically and experimentally, which achieves an impedance bandwidth of 18.67% (over 2.04-2.46 GHz) with a reflection coefficient < -10 dB and mutual coupling minimization of < -20 dB. An evaluation of MIMO antennas is presented, with analysis of correlation coefficient, total active reflection coefficient (TARC), capacity loss and channel capacity. These characteristics indicate that the proposed antenna suitable for some wireless applications.
