The pandemic generated by the Coronavirus COVID-19 challenged universities to go exclusively online thus affecting both the education and personal life of teachers and students. This work analyzes the perceptions of Lithuanian and Romanian university students as regards the extrinsic and intrinsic motivation of online learning during the pandemic. Following the technology acceptance theory, extrinsic motivation has been operationalized as the perceived usefulness and intrinsic motivation as the perceived enjoyment. Although the results show a low to moderate motivation for online/distance learning, interesting differences between the two motivating factors have been found, as well as between the perceptions of students from the two countries.

The process of distance learning and its evaluation during the COVID-19 pandemic is a particularly relevant object of scientific research. Analysing the accumulated experience, we can not only evaluate the situation of distance learning in Lithuanian higher institutions during the pandemic, but also by analysing the challenges posed by distance learning and opening new opportunities, to look for the directions for improving distance learning.
In January-February 2021, a qualitative study was conducted, in which 158 students from three Lithuanian universities participated. Most of the respondents were students of social and humanitarian study programmes. Qualitative data obtained on the basis of open-ended questions were analysed using the method of quantitative content analysis, i.e., semantic subcategories and categories according to two main variables were distinguished: similarities between regular and distance lectures, and the positive and negative aspects of distance lectures.
It was found that certain similarities were characteristic of regular and distance lectures, and the positive aspects significantly outweighed the negative ones.

Media diversity within video lectures has been shown to have an effect on students who participate in both flipped classes as well as online courses. While some research claims that content delivered through multiple sources leads to more learning, contrasting research makes the claim that too much media hinders cognitive processing. The present study investigated the effects of varying levels of instructional media delivered to students (n=110) within a flipped scientific writing course to investigate the relationship between higher levels of media diversity and student performance. Results showed that more diversity led to lower levels of performance. It was also found that higher levels of media diversity correlated with higher levels of students' scanning between different forms of media, possibly contributing to the lower levels of performance. The implications of these results provide insight into the optimal level of media diversity, and on student behavior that can affect learning.
