Humans can recollect past events in details (recollection) and/or know that an object, person or place has been encountered before (familiarity). During the last two decades, there has been intense debate about how recollection and familiarity are organized in the brain. Here, we propose an Integrative Memory model which describes the distributed and interactive neurocognitive architecture of representations and operations underlying recollection and familiarity. In this architecture, the subjective experience of recollection and familiarity arises from the interaction between core systems storing particular kinds of representations shaped by specific computational mechanisms and an attribution system. By integrating principles from current theoretical views about memory functioning, we provide a testable framework to refine the prediction of deficient versus preserved mechanisms in memory-impaired populations. The case of Alzheimer's disease is considered as an example because ...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of levels of processing (LOP) and various navigation design types (NDTs) on high school students’ recall and retention performances in e-learning environments. The participants’ (N=90) performances of free recall, title recognition, location memory and their retentions were measured in two different navigational layout design types by giving participants the instructional tasks which were designed in shallow, medium and deep LOP. Results are in accordance with the main argument of LOP; deeply processed elements are remembered better and the strength of the encoded memory trace depends on the mental processes carried out with different types of tasks. Results show that the main effects of LOP and NDT on memory performance are significant.

A key role in the successful implementation of any learning approach is played by teachers, so how well blended learning works will depend largely on how well teachers make the transition from their traditional face-to-face classroom roles to the wider more complex role that blended learning requires. The additional skills and the forging of a new professional identity might not come easily to all practitioners. This paper evaluates the impact that the introduction of blended learning in a distance language learning course has had on teachers. It presents and discusses findings from a small-scale evaluation study which compared quantitative and qualitative data gathered through a survey and a small number of interviews with participant observations from the researcher and the institutional end-of-course debriefing report. The paper argues that whilst technological challenges and the sheer amount of change that teachers were faced with were largely responsible for some of the negative ...

Today classification techniques in data mining are most popular to prediction and data exploration. This Heart Disease Prediction System HDPS is using Naive Bayesian Classification with a comparison for simple probability and that of Jelinek Mercer JM Smoothing. It is implemented as an Android based application user must be feedback and answers the questions then can be seen the result as user desired in different ways exactly heart disease is present or not and then with predictions No, Low, Average, High, Very High . And the system will be provided required suggestions such as doctor details and medications to patients could be able. It will be also proved that enhanced Naive Bayes with Jelinek Mercer smoothing technique is also effective to eliminate the noise for prediction the heart disease. This system can also calculate classifier accuracy by using precision and recall. Nan Yu Hlaing | Phyu Pyar Moe "Android Based Questionnaires Application for Heart Disease Prediction S...

There is a growing interest in the use of context-awareness as a technique for developing pervasive computing applications that are flexible and adaptable for users. In this context, however, information retrieval (IR) is often defined in terms of location and delivery of documents to a user to satisfy their information need. In most cases, morphological variants of words have similar semantic interpretations and can be considered as equivalent for the purpose of IR applications. Consequently, document indexing will also be more meaningful if semantically related root words are used instead of stems. The popular Porter's stemmer was studied with the aim to produce intelligible stems. In this paper, we propose Context-Aware Stemming (CAS) algorithm, which is a modified version of the extensively used Porter's stemmer. Considering only generated meaningful stemming words as the stemmer output, the results show that the modified algorithm significantly reduces the error rate of...

In this study, the effect of multimedia learning environment prepared according to the attention types (focused-split) on recall performances of learners with attention level (high-low) was investigated by using eye movement measures. The participants were 37 undergraduate students who were presented with either focused attention or split attention multimedia learning environment. After attention levels of the learners were determined by d2 Test of Attention, they were separated to two groups as high and low. On the other hand, the instructional media were designed according to focused and split attention types. Multimedia in split attention type was applied to the half of the learners in groups determined with respect to attention level and multimedia in focused attention type was applied to the other half. Eye tracking (number of fixations, hetmap, dwell time) data were collected during the study. Their recall performances were measured with recall tasks. After that, the researchers evaluated recall performances of all learners and eye movement measures. According to Two Way ANOVA test results, it seems that application of different multimedia applications in terms of attention type on the learners having different attention capacities has no significant effect on number of fixations. The multimedia applications prepared in different attention types to the learners has significant effect on number of fixations. Attention capacities of learners have no significant effect on number of fixation. According to eye tracking measurements, in the focused attention multimedia application, it seems that the learners look at the parts where they are supposed to focus on and the most videos are shown. On the other hand, it seems that the learners look at the parts that video, text and picture are shown together in split attention multimedia application. According to Independent Samples t-test results, recall performances of the learners show a significant difference according to multimedia applications on behalf of focused attention multimedia application.

The role of emotional state on memory has been well established. How emotion provoking stimuli influence the cognitive processes is, however, not well understood. Our broad objective was to see the impact of emotion provoking visual stimulus on memory. Sixty images were generated using Indian version of the Geneva Affective Picture Database (GAPED). Four categories of images (child, adult, animal and landscape) were either pleasant or unpleasant in nature. These images were shown to thirty participants following a repeated measure design. Immediate free recall of the images was recorded to see the effect of type of image on recall. Bayesian inference was used to analyze the data. Results show evidence for effect of type of image on recall by 120:1 against the null. The model of image category was also preferred to the null by 35:1.

This paper critically examines the integration of online fanfiction practices into an advanced university English language classroom. The fanfiction project, The Blogging Hobbit, was carried out as part of a course in the teacher education program at a Swedish university for students who were specializing in teaching English at the secondary school level. Participants were 122 students who completed the course in 2013 and 2014. In both classes, students were organized into groups of three to six to write collaborative blog-based role-play fanfiction of a missing moment from JRR Tolkien’s fantasy novel The Hobbit. The 31 resulting pieces of collaborative fanfiction, the online formats they were published in, the 122 reflective essays produced by the two classes, and interviews with a focal group of participants were used to explore how technology and learners’ experience with this technology may have mediated the resulting stories. In addition, the classroom fanfiction texts were com...

This article reports on the psychometric properties of The Recalled Childhood Gender Identity/Gender Role Questionnaire, a 23-item questionnaire designed to measure recalled gender-typed behavior and relative closeness to mother and father during childhood. Five considerations guided its development: (1) scale items should show, on average, evidence for “normative” sex differences or be related to within-sex variation across target groups for which one might expect, on theoretical grounds, significant differences; (2) the items should be written in a manner such that they could be answered by both men and women; (3) the items should provide coverage of a range of gender-typed behaviors, including those that capture core aspects of the phenomenology of gender identity disorder in children; (4) the items should be abstract enough such that the description of the underlying construct would not be tied to a specific object or activity that might have been common during one period of tim...

Crisis of product defect causes recalls, which not only causes financial loss but also devastates brand reputation. This study explores customers' response to the twice recall of the Galaxy Note 7 in Korea. The authors examined the semantic networks of consumers comments from the Samsung official social media 'Samsung Newsroom (blog and Facebook)' in five time periods(i.e., release, first recall, recommendation to discontinue use, second recall, and compensation program). Customers in each period showed different emotional states which were positive in the first recall but negative in the second recall. Therefore, timely recall and factual communication is needed to the product-harm crisis management, but root cause investigation should be taken to avoid further recalls.

Honda Motor Company, one of the world's largest automobile manufacturers, produces some of the most recognized passenger vehicles in the market. The brand, however, is implicated in the airbag supplier Takata Corporation's inflator scandal, threatening the lives of millions of drivers and affecting some of Honda's most popular nameplates. This case explores how a globally recognized brand mobilizes itself to react to the largest-scale recall in the history of the automotive industry.
