Grief is not an exclusively private and intrapsychic phenomenon but a dynamic process whereby the bereaved negotiates the meaning of the loss in a way that may challenge his/her personal self-narrative. Drawing on a social constructionist model of grief, this paper features a case study where we analyse narratives of mourning elicited through a personal photographic project. The visual-based narrative methodology used in our study (photo-production) not only allows for multi-modal forms of expression and communication in the study of grief, but it also serves as an aid for individuals to scaffold further meaning-making processes which cannot be conveyed through narrative alone. The paper concludes with an invitation to reflect on the use of photography as both a possible methodological tool to explore narratives of grief and a therapeutic tool for the construction of meanings and continuing bonds with the deceased.

The rooms in Intensive Care Units are considered as high-tech environments and believed to affect recovery process and wellbeing of patients. Moreover, the design and interiors affect the interplay between the patient and the next of kin. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe and interpret the meanings of the intensive care patient room as experienced by next of kin. Design: Next of kin (n = 14) from two different intensive care units participated. Data were collected through photo-voice and analysed using a phenomenological hermeneutical method. Results: Three major themes emerged; dwelling in the room and time, becoming at home and extension of the room. The results show that the room is perceived as a lived and extended place and space. The design, interiors and furnishing in the patient room are fundamental in shaping the next of kin's experiences in the room and affect wellbeing. Conclusions: How intensive care patient rooms are designed, the place given to next of kin and the way they are received in the room are decisive for the support given to the loved one. Simple interventions can make the patient room a more healing environment.

To present an overview of how documents can be incorporated as key sources of data in qualitative nursing research. Methods: Analysis of the nature of documents and the distinctive features of any research strategy to analyze documents. Conclusions: Many different strategies can be used in the analysis of documentary sources that are relevant to nursing practice. A systematic approach to the analysis of these textual resources, using one or several of the analytic strategies described here, can support and advance nursing scholarship.

Robert Braidwood's career was devoted to investigation of one of the most significant transitions in the human past: from hunting-gathering-foraging of wild plants and animals to agriculture and pastoralism. Beginning with the work he conceived and directed at the prehistoric village site of Jarmo in northern Iraq, he spent half a century carrying out interdisciplinary research on that problem in Iraq, Iran, and Turkey. His 1950s Iraq-Jarmo Project, and the publications based on it, were so well known that for several decades during the mid-20th century, anthropology students were required to display knowledge about Jarmo and "the hilly flanks of the Fertile Crescent." That phrase was Braidwood's description of the mountain foothill locales where he believed the world's first village farming communities were established-places like Jarmo, where wild wheat, barley, and legumes grew and wild goats, sheep, pigs, and cattle roamed. Such sedentary communities, he thought, laid the economic foundations for development of Bronze Age civilization in the Tigris-Euphrates floodplain.

Research questions; Qualitative studies; Forming qualitative questions Summary One of the initial and challenging processes that research students and students undertaking research modules encounter is the formation or appraisal of the research question. Research questions acquire significance as the rigor and validity of the research project rests on the extent to which the conclusions of the study have answered the research question. For qualitative studies the research question acquires even greater significance since the notions of audit trail, which commences from the research question is considered as an indication of a valid or not research. Hence, the formation of a qualitative research question requires to be based on a framework as to have specific content, coherence and structure. The content takes the form of a declarative statement that provides focus on a specific issue, but at the same time allows enough flexibility as for variables to emerge from the data. The coherence should smoothly bridge the philosophical/theoretical propositions of the qualitative paradigms with the practical execution of the study and this is achieved by the use of specific verbs, nouns and phrases. Lastly, the structure needs to adequately answer to the who, when, where, what, how and why of the study.

This article offers an analysis of the dozens using Black feminist theory. The dozens are a ritualized verbal game of insults that historically have used sexual offenses against Black women as the vehicle for insults. Rather than simply viewing the dozens as a cultural phenomenon, the article draws a connection between its occurrence in West Africa, the West Indies, slave communities, and post enslavement and attempts to understand the various changes and the connection of the dozens to Black female devaluation. Through dialog with Oshun, the author deconstructs the historical and cultural significance of the dozens, placing it in a constructed conversation methodology. Importantly, the article shows how deconstruction of the dozens can be used as a pedagogical tool leading students to a deeper and more thorough understanding of a taken‐for‐granted cultural phenomenon.

Experiences of loss and chronic sorrow in persons with severe chronic illness Aims and objectives. The aims of the present study were to describe losses narrated by persons afflicted with severe chronic physical illness and to identify the concomitant occurrence of chronic sorrow. Background. Reactions connected with repeated losses are referred to in the literature as chronic sorrow, which has recently been described in conjunction with chronic illness. Design. A qualitative study with an abductive approach of analysis, including both inductive and deductive interpretations. Method. The study is based on 30 persons of working age with average disease duration of 18 years. The average age was 51 years. All of the persons had personal assistance for at least three months because of considerable need for help in daily life due to physical disability. Each person was interviewed twice. There was also an independent assessment of the deductive results concerning chronic sorrow. Results. The inductive findings show that all persons had experienced repeated physical, emotional and social losses. Most common were 'Loss of bodily function', 'Loss of relationship', 'Loss of autonomous life' and 'Loss of the life imagined'. 'Loss of identity' included the loss of human worth, dignity and a changed selfimage. In addition, the deductive findings suggest that chronic sorrow exists in the study population. Sixteen of 30 participating subjects were assessed by both assessors to be in a state of chronic sorrow and there was an especially high agreement with respect to one criterion of chronic sorrow 'Loss experience, ongoing or single event' (28 of 30 subjects). Conclusions. This study shows that persons with severe chronic illness often experience recurring losses. These experiences are consistent with the phenomenon of chronic sorrow. Relevance to clinical practice. Knowledge of the existence of chronic sorrow in persons with chronic illness will enable nurses to support these persons in a more sensitive and appropriate way.

This article discusses the suitability of the focus group method for conducting research early in post-resettlement among refugee parents and carers in South Australia. This method was employed to uncover the refugee parenting experience in pre-resettlement contexts. There were three refugee focus groups, consisting of a Sudanese women's group, an African men's group, and an Afghani and Iraqi women's group. To illustrate each group's differential parenting ecologies in milieus of forced migration ecological matrixes were devised which are presented in the results section. An ecological matrix was also developed to unpack, code and analyse transcripts. The matrix was designed to include categories and actions so as to construct meaning units and subsequent condensed meaning units to determine the concluding themes. These provided an analytical framework with which to illuminate the constructed meanings participants attributed to their refugee parenting experiences. The findings provide insights into the ecology of the refugee parenting experience and might be of considerable importance for Australian resettlement services and state systems of child protection seeking to develop culturally appropriate and relevant services.

This paper proposes a postmodernism and cultural studies influenced collorary to Cynthia Dillard's notion of "an endarkened feminist epistemology." The paper illustrates that Dillard has developed the notion principally as enabling of a project of recueillement the articulation of a black feminist epistemology and research paradigm. What remains unaddressed in this project (albeit understandably), is the question of what difference difference makes within an endarkened epistemology. Illustrating that difference always compounds and complicates matters, the paper proceeds to draw on postmodernist and cultural studies theory to work with the ways in which race, gender, and sexual orientation interplay to produce an articulation that does not displace the notion of an endarkened feminist epistemology but rather runs parallel and acts as a corollary in the same dual project of contributing to both the "curiously belated" examination of race and racism in educational research in general, and the development of a black feminist epistemology and research paradigm in particular.

This article suggests utilizing dialectical imagery, as understood by German social philosopher Walter Benjamin, as an additional qualitative data analysis strategy for research into the postmodern condition. The use of images mined from research data may offer epistemological transformative possibilities that will assist in the demystification of illusory modernist methodological frameworks, and invites postmodern interpretations of subjective experiences recounted in qualitative research.

The spreading of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in exhibitions is, among other reasons, due to the wish of curators to find new ways to improve visitors’ experiences in museums. This has lead to an interest to understand if and how they really work as a museological and museographical element and assess their effectiveness. However, systematic studies in this field remain very limited or are not of sufficient depth. Although the technological field has a long tradition of assessment, this usually concentrates on technological, attitudinal or cognitive issues and does not take into account the specific features of the visit in a museum or cultural heritage sit and the importance of the social context. This paper stresses the need to carry out and take into account the results of a systematic body of analyses dealing with how technological displays are really used. It also discusses the need to concentrate on the social dimension of the visit and use of ICT and to develop the methodological aspects. Based on previous studies and on our own research, the contribution of this paper is twofold: firstly, it provides an overview of empirical results concerning the use of different kinds of ICT exhibits and secondly, it discusses some preliminary ideas aimed at the construction of a methodology for qualitative evaluation. The short and long term purpose is to establish the basic guidelines for the effective integration of ICT applications in museums and cultural heritage.

A grounded theory was developed to describe the processes of self-understanding of a group of Chinese women graduate students who were studying in the United States at the time ofthe research. A basic psychological process, reweaving a fragmented self, was identified from interviews with 20 Chinese women graduate students. Reweaving a fragmented self included three sub-processes: weaving self, fragmenting self and reweaving self, as occurred across two chronological phases, being women students in their homeland and becoming international women students in a new land. Categories and codes explain and support each of the processes. The implications of this research are theoretical and practicaL It contributes to the critical theories of women's selves in a cultural context by exploring the ways in which these Chinese women graduate students negotiated critical cultural elements in their self-understanding. It also contributes to American higher education by enhancing educators' understanding of the diversity of these women students' experiences, expec tations and desires and providing them with information on these students' self-understanding.

This paper discusses how different concepts of rhythm apply to phenomenological psychological research. We suggest that viewing phenomenological research in psychology as rhythmic not just enables us to notice how the research procedure implies certain shifts within in a series of temporally structured movements of repetition and change; it also enables us to deepen our understanding of the manner in which the researcher engages with the studied phenomenon through intuition. In other words, we argue that rhythm is fundamental to the method of how we understand “the things themselves.”

This essay addresses the topic of the state of qualitative research in education by asserting that qualitative research in education is in quite a state. Drawing heavily on Denzin and Lincoln's periodization of qualitative research as a guide, it outlines the various competing developments from within and outside that are vying to characterize the current moment and illustrates the difficulty of pinpointing the moment. Arguing for a conception of overlapping moments rather than a neat historical progression, the essay posits that the current period is simultaneously one of overt politicization, epistemological and paradigmatic proliferation, post-posts (post-postmodernism, postpoststructuralism, post-experimentation) and a new post (postcolonialism), as well as a new or renewed paradigm war. The conclusion drawn is that the current/next moment in qualitative research in education is one of methodological contestation, one that demands either complicity with or resistance to the government-sanctioned resurgence of the hegemony of positivism.

We present a qualitative study of 35 United States households whose occupants have made significant accommodations to their homes and behaviors in order to be more environmentally responsible. Our goal is to inform the design of future sustainable technologies through an exploration of existing "green" lifestyles. We describe the motivations, practices, and experiences of the participants. The participants had diverse motivations ranging from caring for the Earth to frugal minimalism, and most participants also evidenced a desire to be unique. Most participants actively and consciously managed their homes and their daily practices to optimize their environmental responsibility. Their efforts to be environmentally responsible typically required significant dedication of time, attention, and other resources. As this level of commitment and desire to be unique may not generalize readily to the broader population, we discuss the importance of interactive technologies that influence surrounding infrastructure and circumstances in order to facilitate environmental responsibility. 978-1-60558-011-1/08/04…$5.00. promoting energy awareness , leveraging social networks to motivate individuals to reduce their ecological footprints , or reducing the coordination costs associated with ride sharing . Our study seeks to inform such efforts through a holistic investigation of environmentally responsible practice and experience.

One of the initial and challenging processes that research students and students undertaking research modules encounter is the formation or appraisal of the research question. This paper situates paradigm talk with its insistence on multiplicities and proliferations in tension with a resurgent positivism and governmental imposition of experimental design as the gold standard in research methods. Using the concept of 'coloring epistemologies' as an index of such tensions, the essay argues for proliferation as an ontological and historical claim. What all of this might mean in the teaching of research in education is dealt with in a delineation of five aporias that are fruitful in helping students work against technical thought and method: aporias of objectivity, complicity, difference, interpretation, and legitimization. The essay concludes with a 'disjunctive affirmation' of multiple ways of going about educational research in terms of finding our way into a less comfortable social science full of stuck places and difficult philosophical issues of truth, interpretation and responsibility.

As a predominant discourse of the early twenty-first century, the new capitalism (and its companion cultural system, neoliberalism) privilege flexibility, risk, emotional intelligence, and the enterprising self. New capitalist discourses exert powerful and pervasive effects across all dimensions of human experience and activity from personal decision-making to family life to school to the workplace, and they encourage, even demand, that workers become individualized, self-actualized subjects. In this article, we discuss how new capitalist discourses affected talk and social interaction in one fourth-grade classroom. More specifically, we report on how the classroom teacher encouraged students to become more deeply aware of their affective investments in relation to themes in the books they read and to connect these investments to their everyday lives. We demonstrate further that this emphasis on affective investment involved high levels of risk for the students and positioned them as enterprising selves.

Purpose-Genetic testing for hereditary forms of cancer does not always identify a causative mutation. Little is known about personal or family response to these indeterminate results when a hereditary form of cancer is suspected. This study explored thoughts about and responses to risk for hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) when a family member has received indeterminate genetic test results. Design-In this qualitative study, data were gathered from index cases who received indeterminate genetic test results through a longitudinal study offering genetic counseling and testing for HNPCC. First-degree relatives of these indeterminate index cases were also invited to participate in the qualitative interview. Methods-Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with index cases and their atrisk first-degree relatives. Data were analyzed using the within-and across-case method. Findings-The across-case analysis led to the development of the Awareness and Surveillance Trajectory, which describes individual interpretations of and responses to risk, based on personal and family history. Explanations of risk addressed the meaning of cancer in the family and provided context for individual interpretations. They were identified using within-case analysis and organized into a typology: innate, exceptional, idiosyncratic, and undeveloped explanations. Conclusions-Members of families without identified HNPCC mutations vary in their explanations for, interpretations of, and responses to indeterminate genetic test results. Clinical Relevance-Explanations of family risk and interpretations of individual risk offer health care providers valuable information. In combination with the Awareness and Surveillance Trajectory, assessment of these beliefs can facilitate development of individualized recommendations and strategies for possible preventive actions.

Background: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is among the top unmet concerns reported by breast cancer survivors. Despite the sizable literature on FCR, few theoretical models have been empirically tested. One of the most cited is the FCR model. Aim: This study seeks to understand the nature of women's cognitive and emotional issues from FCR using specific guidance from the model by Lee-Jones and to provide suggestions for modifications to the model based on empirical results from the reported experiences of women living with breast cancer. Methods and results: A qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews was conducted at an urban hospital. Recruited by convenience sampling, 12 breast cancer survivors concerned with FCR and who had recently completed active treatment participated in the study. Seven thematic categories emerged from the women's descriptions of their cognitive and emotional experiences with FCR: (a) FCR is always there; (b) beliefs about risk of recurrence; (c) beliefs about eradication of cancer; (d) preferences not to seek information about recurrence; (e) derailment of normal life; (f) worries related to recurrence; and (g) need for support. Adjustments to the model by Lee-Jones et al 1 specifically to women living with breast cancer include the addition of new variables-the fear is always present, a preference not to seek information, and the need for support beyond treatment-and the merging of two variables, anxiety and worry, as participants viewed these concepts as interchangeable and experienced in similar ways. Lastly, participants did not report any remorse related to not opting for more aggressive treatments. Conclusion: The refinement of a more comprehensive FCR theoretical model, such as through the modifications derived from this study, provides a deeper understanding of breast cancer survivors' experiences with FCR and can more effectively guide health care professionals to develop appropriately tailored interventions aimed at decreasing FCR levels.

Although qualitative research methods remain marginalized in certain disciplines, qualitative inquiry has within the last couple of decades become generally accepted as a legitimate scientific way of working. Today, society at large is making more use of qualitative research than ever, not just in laudable social justice research, for example, but also in relation to market and consumer research and focus groups for different political parties. With this in mind, I wish to discuss three current questions for qualitative researchers: The first I will refer to as "ethical progressivism versus new ethical challenges". Is qualitative research as such more ethical and progressive than quantitative research (as some have argued), or do qualitative researchers on the contrary face more elusive and perhaps difficult ethical challenges? The second question is called "solid evidence versus subjective anecdotes". How should qualitative researchers respond to the current call for evidence? Should they seek legitimacy by accepting the dominant politics of evidence, or should they play by their own rules with the risk of increasing marginalization? The third question is "method versus intuition". Should qualitative researchers strive for maximum transparency by following accepted methods, or should they proceed more intuitively like artists to create their stories? Both sides of the questions have their influential advocates today. I will argue that all three questions are handled most fruitfully by conceiving of qualitative research as a craft.

It is a qualitative investigation centred on a user profile defined by two parameters: regular reading of paid-for journalistic content and familiarisation with the iPad device. The object of this study is the video content inserted in the publication El Mundo in Orbyt. The results demonstrate that the sample subjects find that the videos do not give added journalistic value.
