Modern communications technology revolutionized the way, mobility and efficiency of electronic communications. Starting from with Alexander Graham Bells' telephone experiments to widely practiced W-CDMA network and the nearly achieved 4G mode of communications, all had and will have great contributions in today's voice/data network arena. Wireless technology has achieved evolutionary success aiming at unified target: efficiency, performance and feasibility in high mobile environment. The mobile experience is expanding everywhere fulfilling the basic electronic communication needs. The first generation (1G) was analog. 1G established seamless mobile connectivity used for basic mobile voice until being replaced by the second generation (2G) digital telecommunications technologies which increased voice capacity delivering mobile to the masses with network infrastructure supporting text messaging. The success of digital voice and simple data prompted to the development of cellular wireless communication system with improved data connectivity and more accessible features leads to followed by the third generation (3G). Third generation system having mobile optimization for data enabling mobile broadband services with better and higher speed of data transfer and connectivity. The fourth generation (4G) having more capacity for faster and better wireless mobile broadband experiences with accessing capability to wide range of communication services, including advanced mobile services, and enhancement in the quality of services with increase in the bandwidth. In this paper we address the evolution of wireless modern mobile communication systems, from first generation (1G) to the widely practiced third generation (3G), recently introduced fourth generation (4G) and some glimpse of foreseeable future of fifth generation (5G).

This work proposes solutions to solve the incoming challenges in 5G base station planning. The machine learning-based algorithms were proposed for location planning and policy planning. Machine learning algorithms require a considerable amount of data, the ray tracing engine with the theoretical propagation models for 5G NR frequency bands is developed. The experiment results from the proposed algorithms in location planning have proved to be able to determine the optimal locations based on the simulation for both single base station and multiple base stations planning. Additionally, deep reinforcement learning algorithms were introduced to implement the 5G small cell to be an AI-powered small cell by learning the multipath signals from its connected users to construct an optimal policy to control the transmit power and radiation pattern. With the implementation of deep neural networks, the small cell was able to acknowledge the unprecedented information from multipath signals. The final policy planning from the AI-powered small cell has shown to improve the power efficiency and the service quality of the connected devices.

This work presents observations from an extensive set of measurements of the direction of arrival and signal strength of HF signals propagating on a path (Ottawa to Bruntingthorpe) oriented along the mid-latitude trough with path length 5254km. Signals were radiated on five frequencies between 5.4 and 14.4 MHz and measurements span the period from the 2009 sunspot minimum to July 2014, which is within the present sunspot maximum. Deviations were observed to occur from 7 to 14.4 MHz. The largest deviationswere mostly southerly and occurred at the highestfrequencies:8, 11.1 and 14.4 MHz. In general, deviations occurred more in winter than summer. The received signal strengths were greater during summer than winter and the largest signal strengths were produced at the lowest frequency while the largest frequency produced the least signal strengths. There is also an observed effect on the duration and percentage of occurrence of propagation due to the solar cycle.

In this article we take advantage of the experiences gained while working on the project SDRECOL to propose a model that allows us to promote the use of Software Defined Radio for developing solutions to support the Radio Spectrum Management. We also take advantage of the benefits of SDR to observe the Radio Spectrum, thus integrating not only the wide range of possibilities offered by this technology in combination with the existing ones, but also the Internet of Things and the support of different persons. Finally, we analyze two solutions implemented in the project SDRECOL in such a way that it is possible to do both: validate the model and demonstrate in practice the magnitude of the opportunities provided by SDR to deal with diverse needs of RSM such as solution for monitoring the RS and measurement of non-ion radiation; both of them based on the integration of SDR with IoT.

This presentation attempts to examine the social and communicational changes that new technologies and especially internet technology has over “traditional” media, such as radio and communication practices. More than ninety years after the world’s first station was founded, radio is still the most pervasive, accessible, affordable, and flexible mass medium available. Over the past few years a number of experiments blending independent local radio and the Internet are creating new models of communication. A newer generation of audience evolved through this amalgamation of older and newer technology. Interfaces that allow the user to select through a wide range of music styles and artists transform the radio to a personal music player with the quality elements of the old medium and the personalized music choices of the audience.

Radio Relations is collection of post-conferences papers of ECREA Radio Research Section Conference held in Lublin in September 2017. The book highlights what radio actually is: a medium created to connect different places at a distance. Subtle but pervasive, simple but graceful, radio build affective relations – either between listeners and the world or between listeners themselves. The word relations is plural. It suggests the idea that radio is both an economic activity – related to technology, production, working routines and business – and a cultural industry – related to aesthetics, art, social interaction, education and politics. Since relations are relevantly human, we can read about how radio appeals to personal commitment and can reinforce a sense of community too. The unique value of this book lies both in erudite essays of Seán Street and Enrico Menduni, world-famous figures of radio research, and in perspectives sketched by young brilliant radio practitioners and researchers. Diverse views on the radio communications from authors across the different regions of the world, eg. Brazil, Canada, Italy, Poland, France, Spain or United Kingdom will certainly inspire radio researchers, media historians, sociologists and journalism students.

In current years, there have been a large progress in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) due to their development in term of hardware and cost reduction. Plenty of routing protocols have been proposed and developed depending on the application and network architecture. One of the most efficient energy management of the wireless sensor networknodes is provided by the LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) mechanism. This hierarchical protocol uses cluster head function of the nodes to aggregate and forward the messages from the cluster members to the Sink node. Each node decides to become cluster head stochastically in each epoch time intervals. Nodes have enough energy to reach directly through radio channel any of the nearest cluster nodes, as well as the sink node. Optimization algorithm is required to provide efficient energy consumption on the WSN clusters level. A node being cluster head in the actual epoch time can repeat this function just with a probability p in time. ...

This article presents a solution for the convergence of mobile and fixed access networks on the physical level that allows different service providers to share the same mobile infrastructure. A mobile cell solution is presented which features a fibre optic access infrastructure that is independent of the standard and allows the transmission of different types of broadband telecommunication traffic. For an efficient broadband network frequencies in the millimetre-wave range need to be used (30 – 300 GHz) and the cell size needs to be reduced to a pico (100 m) or even femto (10 m) of a cell. The network presented is based on the transmission of a radio signal over optic fibre, namely ‘Radio over Fibre‘ (RoF). The goal is to transfer complex signal processing functions from the base station to the central station. This decreases the costs of remote antenna units in the base station, making a larger number of picocells a viable solution. Uneconomical radiofrequency signal processing fun...

This article presents a solution for the convergence of mobile and fixed access networks on the physical level that allows different service
providers to share the same mobile infrastructure. A mobile cell solution is presented which features a fibre optic access infrastructure that is independent
of the standard and allows the transmission of different types of broadband telecommunication traffic. For an efficient broadband network frequencies
in the millimetre-wave range need to be used (30 – 300 GHz) and the cell size needs to be reduced to a pico (100 m) or even femto (10 m) of a cell.
The network presented is based on the transmission of a radio signal over optic fibre, namely ‘Radio over Fibre‘ (RoF). The goal is to transfer complex signal
processing functions from the base station to the central station. This decreases the costs of remote antenna units in the base station, making a larger
number of picocells a viable solution. Uneconomical radiofrequency signal processing functions such as (de)modulation, synchronisation, multiplexing,
frequency hopping, spread spectrum technology and other technologies are now located in the central station. The RF signal created in the central station
is distributed through remote base station antenna units which cover the picocells used by mobile users. This article also presents the key building
blocks of the RoF system, such as a photodiode with an integrated antenna, an electro absorption modulator, an optic millimetre-wave generator with a
phase-locked loop and an optic-controllable antenna.

Radio over fiber (RoF) system is a promising technique for microcell and picocell applications for deployment of future ubiquitous wireless data networks. However, the performance of RoF systems can be severely degraded due to nonlinear effects in the channel. Also, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), as a standard for broadband wireless networks, is being proposed for deployment with RoF systems to facilitate the total performance of a system. In this research, at first, the performance of OFDM-based RoF link with Mach-Zehnder modulator distortion effects has been analyzed at 5.8 GHz. Evaluation of mean-squared error of the proposed OFDM-RoF system was carried out to compare with the conventional single carrier system based RoF link after the modulator distortion case and also for fixed signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 20 dB using undistorted OFDM signal. Later, nominal and offset biasing pre-distortion techniques are applied in proposed system to linearize the OFDM-RoF link. Thus, finally a comparison between the aforementioned pre-distortion techniques applied showed important observation in terms of distortion-free dynamic range and SNR to choose offset predistortion technique for our proposed system
