Who are the Nephilim? Research Papers (original) (raw)

Gonzales's focus is twofold:
1. "the identity of the 'sons of God' and the Nephilim as found in the Bible" and 2. "the exact process of the recurrence of the Nephilim as found in Numbers 13:32-33 which is long after the flood."

They also elucidate “The name Nephilim” etymologically.
This review considers the claims and notes some basic yet fundamental level issues.

An online search for “Nephilim” just yielded “About 20,900,000 results” so the Bible must be saturated with references to them: here is every biblical reference to Nephilim:
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown (Genesis 6:4 NASB).
There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight (Numbers 13:33 NASB).
That’s all folks!
Nephilim have been a subject of fascination for millennia partly because of their brief mention. Authors of apocrypha, historical fictions, folklore, and modern day hoaxers love to make much ado about not very much so as to fill in the Bible’s gaps. Subsequently, if the Bible only tells us two things about Nephilim, that leaves a lot of room for speculative accretion—to the point that many neo-“ministries” are literally established upon the issue of Nephilim.

Humanity's Relationship to the Spirit Realm of Fallen Angels - To understand the beast and other characters of Revelation, we need to revisit Genesis 6 to see how fallen angels will affect the end times. There are 3 dominant views regarding this famous Genesis 6 passage about the Sons of God. Most Bible interpreters and commentators state that the godly children of Seth are the Sons of God marrying outside the faith, or that fallen angels mated with human women to produce giant offspring. We will expound our focus with a 3rd viewpoint while coordinating related biblical passages and mythology.

In his various elucidations of issues related Nephilim, Dr. Michael Heiser has consistently failed to interact with the narrative of Numbers chapter 13 that is contextually relevant. This is a noteworthy oddity since Num 13:33 is the one and only post-flood Nephilim text and the second of only two texts (verse, actually) that reference Nephilim so that such an omission is quite fundamental. In 2019 he finally posted an article about the text which is reviewed herein.

There is little doubt that the primeval saga of Genesis 6:1–4 would have an astounding exegetical and theological significance to the Bible’s overall narrative if interpreters could only decipher its content. For at least two millennia, exegetes have debated the intention of this pericope. The biblical narrative briefly describes humanity’s population increase (v. 1), a cryptic mention of “the sons of God” taking the “daughters of men” as wives (v. 2), then the resultant limitation on humanity’s mortality (v. 3), and an ambiguous reference to the “Nephilim” (v. 4). F. B. Huey lists several scholars who label the passage either as “strange,” “unintelligible,” or “unsolved.” As John Walton explains, biblical narratives assume ancient sensitivities that are unfamiliar to the modern reader. In order to discern these enigmatic texts, researchers must investigate other ancient Near Eastern works for literary parallels.
The purpose of this article is to identify the function of the “sons of God” in the literary and socio-historical context of Genesis 6:1–4. The article will first present presuppositions to the research, as well as the importance of Ugaritic literature in biblical studies. The investigation will then present a comparative study with the Ugaritic Epic of Kirta and a potential new theory regarding the Genesis pericope. It concludes by suggesting that literary parallels may reveal the Epic of Kirta as a close paradigm for understanding the function of the Genesis passage. The specific sin of the “sons of God” may not have been unsanctioned marriages, adultery, polygamy, or rape. Rather, the biblical account could act as a polemic against the belief that divine kings obtained immortality through marriage and reproduction, which exacerbated Yahweh’s decision to eradicate humanity and to demonstrate the finiteness of these so-called ancient god-kings.

The “sons of God” of Genesis chapter six have been the subject of much controversy. Respected theologians and pastors differ drastically on their understanding of the identity of these beings. There are four basic interpretations regarding the identity of the Sons of God. The purpose of this paper is to examine these views, and to argue that the sons of God were in fact fallen angels who abandoned their proper domain of the spiritual realm and cohabited with human women, corrupting humanity. The three alternative views will first be examined, and then the evidence supporting this fourth view will be presented.

Nephilim have been a topic of fascination for millennia. Their humble Ancient Near East beginnings are two verses in the Tanakh from which spawned folklore that turned them into something quite un-humble. Under consideration is an elucidation of that which the Tanakh tells us about them, how some attempt to plump up the precious little it tells us about them, how to navigate related issues-such as much talk of giants-and how they are presented to us in various forms of folkloric tall tales. We will conclude that the folklorists (ancient and modern), unrestrained by history or theology, created monsters which haunt us to this day even when history and theology tell us that they are long defeated foes.

Genesis 6:1-4 has received a large amount of attention because of characters, location and the word choice used in ti. There are a plethora of studies and discussions about this account and the interpretation of the identity of the characters for generations. Therefore, I will explore previous articles and studies about this issue from the past 15 years. I will study the Masoretic text and compare it with other translations, especially with the LXX. I will explore the grammatical structure of the text and the meaning and use of some of the Hebrew words in it. Similarly, I will explore different interpretations given by the Targum, rabbinical material and early Christian material. I will explore the possible worldview of the primary hearers by researching ancient Near Eastern material, like mythological stories, and compare the biblical text to it.

Partially reviewing what the paper states about the Bible specifically.
We will find that the only reading of the Bible that results in tall tales about "giants" is not a literal one but one which I call a “theo-sci-fi” eisegetical (pseudo) hermeneutic.
We cannot really begin considering "giants" unless and until we define that vague, genetic, subjective term (and I can think of 5-6 definitions). Defining terms at the outset is key to any cogent consideration and yet, many people dive into such discussions midstream, in a manner of speaking, by discussing "giants" without defining that about which they are speaking.
