Difference Between Chromosome and Gene (original) (raw)

Last Updated : 21 Aug, 2025

The **difference between chromosomes and genes lies in their respective functions within the cell. Chromosomes are structures made of DNA and proteins, carrying genetic information, while genes are specific segments of DNA that encode instructions for making proteins or functional RNA molecules.

In this article, we will cover the difference between chromosomes and genes.

Genes

A gene is a segment of DNA that contains the instructions for building a specific protein or RNA molecule. Genes are the basic units of heredity and play a fundamental role in determining an organism's traits and characteristics. Each gene carries the information needed to produce a particular functional product, such as a protein or RNA molecule, which contributes to various biological processes within the organism. Genes can undergo mutations, which can result in changes to the encoded protein or RNA molecule, leading to variations in traits among individuals.

Chromosomes

Chromosome in simpler terms can be called the thread-like structure that consists of DNA, and proteins. It helps in the packing of the DNA inside the nucleus of a cell and during cell division pass on that genetic information into the new cell. In humans there are 23 pairs of chromosomes are found of which 22 pairs are the autosomes that code for different somatic characters of the body and 1 pair codes for the sexuality of the body. As with the gene (actually, it is the gene but in a combined form of many genes), it is also found in pairs one of which comes from each parent.

**Difference Between Gene and Chromosome

The difference between chromosomes and genes is given below in tabular form:

**Characteristics **Gene **Chromosome
**Definition Segments of DNA or RNA that codes for certain characters. DNA and proteins are packed together to form the chromosome.
**Composition A single gene forms the locus of a chromosome. A single chromosome consists of many genes.
**Visibility under the microscope Genes are not visible under a microscope. Chromosomes are visible under the microscope.
**Occurrence Occurs in pairs. Occurs in pairs.
**Mutation The amount of mutation is small. The amount of mutation is large.
**Type of mutation Mutation can be point mutation or frameshift mutation that can be either by insertion or deletion. The mutation causes abnormalities like deletion, rearrangement, inversion, and duplication.

Conclusion - Difference Between Chromosome and Gene

In conclusion, the difference between chromosome and gene helps in understanding the organization and regulation of genetic information within cells. Genes and chromosomes are fundamental components of genetic inheritance and biological function. Genes carry the instructions for specific proteins or RNA molecules, determining individual traits and characteristics. Chromosomes, which are thread-like structures composed of DNA and proteins, organize and pack genetic material, ensuring accurate transmission during cell division.
