PeaZip free bz2 files utility offers full read / write support (compressor, and extractor / opener) for BZ2 compressed file format, through the Open Source components from 7-Zip and p7zip projects (released under LGPL license, as PeaZip) to offer the same GUI frontend to create, browse, and extract .bz2 files under Windows and Linux operating systems.
BZ2 format does not support encryption (files of this type cannot be password protected).

Chaining Bzip2 compression after TAR archiving triggers solid compression: the entire input is treated as a whole in order to attain generally better compression performances that treating each input file separately.
