Episode 17 - "Back to Cauliflower Drove Part 2" (May 18th 1998 4.00pm)
Daisy Worthington had lived at Split Feather Farm, Cauliflower Drove, Barnham for the last sixty five years, from the day she married her late husband, Jack. She now shared the house with her eldest son, John, his wife Anne and their son Darren. Daisy was still in charge of the household though. No one was prepared to dispute that. She remained in the older part of the house with her radio, ray burn cooker and memories of the past. The others lived in a large extension that although it was part of the same house, was effectively 'next door'. Jack had died in 1984 and since then Daisy's life had revolved around looking after the men who continued to work at the farm; John, Darren, Hummer and Clunch. She cooked them breakfast, she made pots of tea and supplied biscuits and also kept them from slacking. This she saw as an important part of her 'job'. If any of the men showed signs of letting the side down she would read them the riot act, invoking memories of previous Worthington's who had had to work under far harsher conditions than the present pampered generation. Indeed it was Daisy who had decided that Brian should not work full time on the farm. She had urged him to make his way in the world as she knew his heart was not into the farming world. He had attempted a variety of other jobs and had lived away for a while but had returned. He now helped out at harvest time and did odd jobs for other farmers in Barnham when an extra hand was needed. Daisy was busying herself with the tea things. Four o'clock. John and Darren would be in soon for a cuppa and a nice cake. Hummer and Clunch would have left for home by now and would be having their tea before going off to the Skaters Run for the evening. That daft Clunch had said they were going to a 'Karate evening'; a bit dangerous for old Hummer she thought. The door opened and in walked her eldest son, now sixty years of age. He was always the proudest thing in her life and so he remained; standing at six foot tall, still with a full head of hair, a handsome weather beaten face and the fitness of someone twenty years younger, John had farmed the land at 'Split Feather' since his father had died. He sat down in a chair and wiped his brow. 'Bloomin' 'ell Mother ! Yew int got the rayburn on today surely ?' Daisy walked over to the cooker and held her hands out to it. 'S'coolin' down now. I'm lettin' it burn out. Last one for a while now we're into a warm spell'. Jack stood up quickly and walked across the kitchen; '..and what are yew doin' with this ?' Daisy had stood a packet of butter on top of the rayburn five minutes previously and had forgotten about it. The butter had now begun to melt and was spreading over the surface in a smelly gooey mess. 'Yor losing yor bloody marbles woman !' said Jack ,'Let's clear it up'. For although Daisy still considered herself to be the rock of the family, the others had been worrying about her for a few years now. Incidents like this were a daily occurrence. As John began to clear up the melting butter, the door opened again and his son Darren walked in. 'Ooh, Darren my lovely' Daisy said excitedly 'I've got your favourite cakes in for you. I gottem the other day and I forgot'. As Daisy scuffled from the kitchen to the pantry, John and Darren exchanged anxious glances; 'The other day !!' It was what they feared. Daisy Worthington's infamous Cake Tin From Hell.
