Interoperabilita je schopnost různých systémů vzájemně spolupracovat, poskytovat si služby, dosáhnout vzájemné součinnosti. Termín se používá nejen pro spolupráci na technické úrovni (spotřebič může být zapojen do elektrické zásuvky, televize zpracuje audio i video signál ap.), ale i pro sociální komunikaci (mezilidská komunikace), politickou spolupráci (mezinárodní vojenské cvičení, měnová unie) a spolupráci služeb (spolupráce státní správy a samosprávy, kooperace mezi podniky). Jako interoperabilita se také označuje Interoperabilita železničního systému v Evropské unii.

(cs) Zu dem Begriff Interoperabilität (von lateinisch opus ‚Arbeit‘ und inter ‚zwischen‘) existieren zwei unterschiedliche, jedoch sinngleiche Definitionen: 1. * Als Interoperabilität bezeichnet man die Fähigkeit zum Zusammenspiel verschiedener Systeme, Techniken oder Organisationen. Dazu ist in der Regel die Einhaltung gemeinsamer technischer Normen notwendig. Wenn zwei Systeme miteinander vereinbar sind, nennt man sie auch interoperabel. 2. * Interoperabilität ist die Fähigkeit unabhängiger, heterogener Systeme, nahtlos zusammenzuwirken, um Daten auf effiziente und verwertbare Art und Weise auszutauschen bzw. dem Benutzer zur Verfügung zu stellen, ohne dass dazu besondere Adaptierungen notwendig sind. Interoperabilität wird in vielen Bereichen als sehr wichtig eingestuft, darunter die Informatik und Telekommunikation sowie die Medizintechnik. Aber auch in Transport- und Verkehrssystemen, militärischen Systemen, der industriellen Automatisierungstechnik und dem E-Government nimmt Interoperabilität eine Schlüsselrolle ein. Interoperabilität kann in der Wirtschaft wichtig sein um zu verhindern, dass durch Patente, Geschäftsgeheimnisse oder Fehler in der Koordination Monopolstellungen erreicht oder ausgebaut werden. Für die öffentliche Hand kann es deshalb von Vorteil sein, Interoperabilität zu fördern. Oft wird zwischen verschiedenen Formen von Interoperabilität unterschieden, zum Beispiel zwischen semantischer und konzeptioneller Interoperabilität. In Zusammenhang mit Software spricht man von syntaktischer Interoperabilität, wenn mehrere Programme dasselbe Dateiformat verwenden; im Zusammenhang mit verteilten Systemen, wenn alle Systemkomponenten dieselben Datenformate (z. B. XML oder JSON) und dasselbe Kommunikationsprotokoll (z. B. TCP, HTTP oder SOAP) verwenden. Das englische Wort interoperability wird in der Softwareentwicklung oft mit I14Y abgekürzt. Pour être simple, on peut dire que la compatibilité est une notion verticale qui fait qu'un outil peut fonctionner dans un environnement donné en respectant toutes les caractéristiques et l'interopérabilité est une notion transversale qui permet à divers outils de pouvoir communiquer - quand on sait pourquoi, et comment, ils peuvent fonctionner ensemble. Autrement dit, on ne peut parler d'interopérabilité d'un produit ou d'un système que si on connaît intégralement toutes ses interfaces. L'interopérabilité est considérée comme très importante voire critique dans de nombreux domaines, dont l'informatique, le médical au sens large, les activités ferroviaires, l'électrotechnique, l'aérospatiale, le domaine militaire et l'industrie en général. Les différents systèmes, appareils et éléments divers utilisés doivent pouvoir interagir sans heurts. Compte tenu du fait que ces éléments sont produits par des constructeurs divers, avec des méthodes variées, et qu'ils répondent à des besoins spécifiques, l'idée la plus simple consiste à définir une base explicite, une norme ou un ensemble de normes, que chaque élément va « implanter » dans son propre fonctionnement. Cette norme joue un double rôle : elle est d'abord un indicateur de la façon dont le dialogue entre les différents éléments doit s'opérer — et cristallise donc les besoins de ce dialogue ; elle est ensuite une passerelle de communication, qui va pouvoir éventuellement s'adapter aux besoins changeants des éléments.
