Die Liste der Weltausstellungen enthält alle als Weltausstellungen bekannten Veranstaltungen ohne die durch das BIE anerkannten Internationalen Gartenbauausstellungen (Horticultural Exhibitions AIPH). Das Bureau International des Expositions (kurz BIE) ist seit 1928 die offizielle Institution zur Vergabe der Weltausstellungen. L’Exposition universelle 2020 Dubaï qui devait se tenir initialement du 20 octobre 2020 au 10 avril 2021 a été reportée du 1er octobre 2021 au 20 avril 2022 en raison de la pandémie de Covid-19. Soutenue par de nombreux pays, dont la France par la voix de la Cofrex (Compagnie Française des Expositions), la décision du report a été annoncé par le BIE le 4 mai 2020. Prima dei documenti internazionali le esposizioni non erano catalogate secondo criteri precisi ma denominate genericamente "esposizione internazionale"; il BIE riconosce una parte delle manifestazioni effettivamente organizzate in quegli anni e le denomina genericamente "esposizioni storiche". Con la convenzione del 1928 (entrata in vigore nel 1931 e successivamente ratificata e modificata nel 1972 e nel 1988) si è pensato di distinguere una tipologia di expo primaria e una secondaria, denominate ufficialmente in maniera diversa, a seconda del periodo e del protocollo in essere, ma normalmente riconducibili alle due categorie di esposizione universale e esposizione specializzata. La prima categoria comprende expo di durata più lunga (normalmente un semestre) e di argomenti più vasti, mentre la seconda expo è di durata più breve (pochi mesi) e di tema più specifico. Le esposizioni hanno anche assunto una frequenza precisa, questo per evitare il gran numero di esposizioni patrocinate dal BIE, che si sono organizzate alla fine del XX secolo.
