L'imam Muhammad est né à Wasit, et grandit à Koufa, en Irak. Comme Abou Yousuf, il étudia d'abord le hadith. Il étudia sous l'imam Abu Hanifa jusque sa mort, puis sous Abou Yousuf pendant trois ans.
