UEFA Cup/Europa League (original) (raw)
Introduced as successor of the Fairs Cup in 1971, basically entered by teams finishing on the places just below the champions (and possibly cup winners), though for some countries also the winners of so-called League Cups were allowed to enter. Allocation of number of places per country based on performances of teams from the country over five previous seasons; every country is guaranteed one entry, the best three countries entered up to four teams. (Nowadays, the strongest countries are guaranteed four entrants in the so-called Champions League, and obtain at most three places in this secondary tournament.)
Traditionally, the UEFA Cup was contested by 64 clubs, but partially due to the appearance of new countries on the map of Europe, UEFA increased the number of entrants, adding additional qualifying rounds. For more detailed information, check out Martin Protzen's FAQ.
Starting with the 2004/05 season, a group phase was included in the tournament. In 2009/10, the competition was renamed Europa League but apart from an extension of the group phase (from 40 to 48 clubs) there was no real change in the set-up of the tournament.
