European Super Cup (original) (raw)

Rangers FC officially celebrated their centenary in 1973. They had won the Cup Winners' Cup the season before and as part of the celebrations they arranged home and away friendlies with the Champions' Cup Winners and World Club Champions, Ajax. To add some extra interest the Dutch newspaper "De Telegraaf" donated a trophy, dubbed the "Super Cup of Europe", to be awarded to the overall winners. The only connection with UEFA at the time was the message of congratulations from the acting president of UEFA, Sandor Barcs, which was reprinted in the program for the match, who also happened to be a fan of Rangers. Later UEFA recognised the tournament and took over its organisation. Until 1999, the entrants were the winners of the Champions' Cup and Cup Winners' Cup. From the 2000 edition on, the UEFA Cup winners enter, as the Cup Winners' Cup was discontinued. The UEFA Cup was renamed Europa League in 2009.
