- Art imitating life? That is the inspiration behind the latest collaboration between The Nature Conservancy Asia Pacific and world-renowned artist Ning Lau who have put together Art for the Earth, an online auction of 16 one-of-a-kind doll pieces that reflect the endangered species within our region. And one of the dolls is inspired by our beloved kākāpō! The auction closes on 31 October. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/gHBMMxnP

As we gear up for Climate Week NYC next week, I'm thinking about the theme for this year: "It's Time." The Nature Conservancy will be present across ten topics next week — Energy, Environmental Justice, Finance, Food, Health, Heavy Industry, Nature (of course), Policy, and Sustainable Living & Transport — to make the case why it's time to tackle our biggest environmental challenges. My colleagues and I will once again be traversing across New York to showcase solutions, continue calls for increased climate ambition, and highlight work being driven by the corporate sector with the goal of accelerating the power of people and nature to tackle the dual crises of the climate emergency and biodiversity loss. We'll continue to help lead the private sector toward net zero and showcase innovations in Natural Climate Solutions, finance, and carbon markets. If you won't be at Climate Week in person, you can still register to participate virtually in several events, including a session I'll be doing with FT Live about "The Role of Business and Investors in Protecting Natural Capital." Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/eXS74KBpAnd if you'll be in New York, there are limited seats available at TNC's events at Scandinavia House and The Nest Climate Campus, including: ⭐ Learning From Early Experiences on Jurisdictional REDD+ Safeguards and Human Rights Screening Tools on 9/23 https://lnkd.in/eTuSUKy8⭐ The Polls Are In and Its Nature for the Win on 9/25 https://lnkd.in/eNGcTK-NSee more about TNC's presence and priorities for #ClimateWeekNYC here: https://lnkd.in/eVCS3T9k - Did you know it's World Water Monitoring Day? When we recognise the importance of water plays for a peaceful and sustainable future. How can we as a community continue to support the global efforts to develop solutions to the world’s greatest water-related challenges, ranging from food security and health to agriculture, technology, biodiversity, and the climate crisis? In Aotearoa, we are working to improve water quality through: Hawke’s Bay: Land For Life: Helping farmers reduce erosion by planting natives on marginal land Blue carbon: How restoring coastal wetlands can help store carbon and build climate resilience Revive Our Gulf: Restoring the mauri of the Tīkapa Moana/Te Moananui-ā-Toi/Hauraki Gulf through returning kūtai/green-lipped mussels to the waters. "When I received the news of my win, I was completely stunned. I couldn’t wait to share the excitement with my family. Their reactions were priceless, and seeing the pride and happiness in their eyes made the moment even more special." 19-year-old student and amateur wildlife photographer, Hanain Ayub, won a three-day trip to Loisaba Conservancy for his winning "People’s Choice" image in The Nature Conservancy in Africa's regional photo contest. With support from TNC and other partners, Loisaba Conservancy is a sanctuary for over 250 bird species and 50 species of mammals. Hanain and his dad were impressed and inspired by Loisaba’s “passion and care” for the area, demonstrated by the anti-poaching units, community engagement programs, sustainable land management, advanced monitoring systems, and more. “Mostly we came to learn what the Māori do in their territory, how they look after their lands and waters, and how they execute their authority over their territory. We’re looking to do the same in our territory.” Chief Darren from the Xwémalhkwu First Nation in British Columbia, sharing the purpose of their cultural exchange to Aotearoa during their time in Te Tai Tokerau. Visiting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and Te Iwi o te Roroa strengthened their cultural connections as the Xwémalhkwu people were introduced to a wero during Pōwhiri proceedings, stayed at their first Marae, experienced the spiritual significance of Tāne Mahuta, the largest known living Kauri tree and connected with a traditional waka, to retrace the Manea Footprints of Kupe. They found the exchange “deeply spiritual, it’s amazing how much easier it is to heal on another land, that isn’t your own, but you feel deeply connected to.” Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/d9ntawD6 #CulturalExchange #CanadaAotearoa #Iwi Homalco First Nation Nature United The Nature Conservancy Asia PacificPita Tipene Ben Dalton Jay Houpapa Reconnecting Northland Snow Tane Heni Uri Eamon Nathan Abbie Reynolds Erik van Eyndhoven Aneika Young Peter H G van Kampen Arpége TaratoaImages: 1. And surprisingly, it wasn't the Andean condor.
While many countries were inspired by the Roman Empire, and chose variations of the eagles as their national bird, others have selected some more unique and fascinating birds. Take the Bermuda petrel, a seabird once believed to be extinct for over 300 years. Remarkably, it has made a triumphant return due to dedicated conservation efforts since the 1950s. Another fascinating national bird is the Guyana hoatzin, known for its flamboyant appearance and long, wispy feathers that give it a charmingly tousled look. Curious to learn more? There are a lot more unique national birds to discover, so dive into the article and check them out for yourself!
