2024 Guide for Climate and Environmental Policy Action - In two decades of working in the Emerald Edge (stretching from the Pacific Northwest to Alaska), TNC and Nature United have seen the transformative impact of deep, trust-based partnerships between Indigenous Peoples and local communities and conservation groups, producing lasting benefits for both people and the planet. Through the carbon map, we’ve identified significant carbon losses in Oregon and Washington state, primarily due to forestry activities. These areas present potential focal points for enhancing carbon storage and sequestration through natural climate solutions projects. Additionally, British Columbia and Alaska, with their extensive old-growth forests and increasing Indigenous land ownership, offer substantial opportunities for large-scale forest-based climate mitigation. These efforts can also address historical and ongoing issues related to equity and access. - Meet the Sitka black-tailed deer, a unique subspecies of mule deer native to the lush coastal rainforests of Southeast Alaska and northern British Columbia. At TNC, we’re committed to identifying and preserving their most crucial habitats. Partnering with various organizations, we’re using cutting-edge research to restore vital forests and streams, ensuring they support diverse wildlife. Learn more: https://nature.ly/4gHTcmn

- Three years ago this week, The Nature Conservancy joined with our partners in Southeast Alaska — Sealaska, Spruce Root, Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska and the Sustainable Southeast Partnership —to proudly launch a new vision for funding Indigenous-led conservation in the region. The Seacoast Trust was envisioned to support the hopes and dreams of communities, knowing that, in the words of one of our founding leaders, 'Gunnuk Anthony Mallott, “Sustainable communities make sustainable decisions. Communities at risk make short-term decisions based on immediate need. The Seacoast Trust will help create sustainability across the region through proven Indigenous stewardship.” Since we announced this groundbreaking new way to provide stable, sustainable funding for these efforts, we've raised $25 million — one-quarter of the way to our ultimate goal. Our momentum is strong and growing. Want to learn more? Please visit seacoasttrust.org.#Indigenousledconservation #Landback📸 Bethany Sonsini Goodrich
