- Recently TNC’s experiences, learnings and successes in restoring Australia’s lost shellfish reefs was shared with a large audience at the 2024 International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) held in the US. Simon Branigan, our Marine Restoration Manager gave a keynote presentation on Reef Builder - Australia’s largest marine restoration initiative to date, sharing key insights on what it takes to undertake such successful restoration at such a large scale. Simon talked to the impactful science-led solutions, formidable partnerships, and unyielding commitment of those that worked on the Reef Builder initiative and TNC’s ambition to continue the momentum to restore 60 shellfish reefs at 60 locations across Australia, making Australia the first nation in the world to recover a critically endangered marine ecosystem. We congratulate all the speakers, panellists and attendees at 2024ICSR. Together, we find a way #reefrestoration #2024ICSR

- Interested in hearing about how we’re working with like-minded conservation organisations to help achieve our planet’s biodiversity goals? Join 400+ delegates at the Private Land Conservation Conference, convened by the Australian Land Conservation Alliance, for two days of expert keynotes, workshops, case study presentations, interactive panels and fireside chats that will help create opportunities to accelerate and scale action toward preserving nature. Our very own Policy and Government Relations Director, Michael O’Neill, will be facilitating this year’s Policy Breakfast on Thursday 10 October, where you can hear everything you need to know about the state of play across Federal, State and Territory policy issues, and what they mean for private land conservation in Australia. View the full conference program and register here: https://nature.ly/3XSX1gVTogether, we can advance solutions that enable people and communities to protect, manage and restore nature on privately managed land, at scale. The Nature Conservancy Australia is a proud ALCA member, and Policy Breakfast Sponsor.#PLC24 #NatureNow #privatelandconservation

The Nature Conservancy Australia’s nature photo contest is back, with more than $14,000 worth of prizes up for grabs. Oceania is an extraordinary region, with many species and unique landscapes found nowhere else in the world. We know that you know better than anyone what breathtaking imagery is on our doorstep. Don’t be shy! Share your pics and enter the contest, which will run until November 8, 2024. Enter today: https://lnkd.in/gifDPBmE #nature #naturephotography - Australia has a new National Park that spans more than 37,000 hectares, is home to more than 158 native species, and forms a wildlife corridor of almost 100,000 hectares in the north-west of NSW. It is a significant milestone in the fight against biodiversity loss. Comeroo Station, purchased by the NSW Government last year, forms the foundation of the newly launched Cuttaburra National Park. This acquisition was supported by The Nature Conservancy, with generous contributions from the Wyss Foundation and Holdfast Collective, Patagonia’s non-profit shareholder. The new park contains a diversity of habitats including alluvial floodplains, swamps, permanent waterholes and wetlands, which support a variety of plants and animals, including three New South Wales and nationally endangered ecological communities. More than a quarter of the park forms part of the Yantabulla Swamp, a mosaic of channels and wetlands which has been identified as the most important water bird breeding site in the region. This achievement reflects the impact of partnerships between state governments, philanthropic foundations and conservational organisations in achieving large-scale protection outcomes to help meet Australia's commitment to protecting 30% of lands, freshwaters, and ocean ecosystems by 2030. - We are excited by this upcoming partnership with Port of Melbourne and the opportunity to continue to deliver positive benefits to people and nature.
#NationalBiodiversityMonth: Port of Melbourne manages 505 ha of land and 52 km of commercial shipping channels within Port Phillip Bay and the Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers, which interface with diverse marine and estuarine ecosystems. To protect and maintain Australia’s unique biodiversity, we conduct hydrographic surveying in Port Phillip Bay and work with public agencies to protect marine national park areas inside and around port waters. We’re also excited to announce an upcoming partnership with The Nature Conservancy in Australia for a new shellfish reef restoration project in Port Philip Bay. This project is the first of its kind and will investigate whether shellfish reefs can be used to enhance the environmental value and biodiversity of dredge material grounds, offering a new option for end-of-life remediation. Stay tuned for more! 📷 Andrew Ternes, Port of Melbourne Senior Hydrographic Surveyor#thenatureconservancy #marineecosystems #biodiversity - Results from the latest monitoring of the restored shellfish reefs in the Swan-Canning Estuary show underwater life is thriving, with the reefs significantly boosting the health and biodiversity of the iconic waterway. This landmark project, the largest of its kind in WA, involved constructing 24 individual shellfish reefs in the lower Swan-Canning Estuary, at 4 locations. These reefs have been in place for about 18 months and are developing well - even better than projected - and we are seeing increased marine life including Leatherjackets, resident Tarwhine, Pink Snapper, Western Striped Grunter and Western Gobbleguts. We’re also seeing natural settlement of a range of shellfish species onto the reefs, including scallops and oysters. The positive outcomes of this project underscore the importance of native shellfish reefs, Australia’s most threatened marine ecosystem, as critical to increased marine biodiversity. What we learn from monitoring also directly informs our approach for future restorations across Western Australia and the rest of the country, as we get closer to achieving our target of restoring 60 shellfish reefs nationally by 2030. TNC is delighted to announce a new shellfish reef restoration project at Korrawinga (Great Sandy Strait), between Hervey Bay and K’Gari (Fraser Island). We will be working alongside the Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, the Queensland Government and local community on this project, which helps us to advance towards our broader objective of restoring 30% of this lost habitat (or 60 shellfish reefs) across Australia by 2030. The Great Sandy Strait Shellfish Reef Restoration Project is supported by the the Australian Government, as part of the Reef Coastal Restoration program and is a natural follow-on from TNC's successful Reef Builder program, a partnership with the Australian Government and local agencies which led to the restoration of shellfish reefs in 13 locations from Perth, WA to Noosa, QLD. Delivered between 2021 and 2023 in collaboration with government, natural resource management organisations, industry, First Nations groups, community groups, recreational fishers and universities, Reef Builder has restored over 40 hectares of lost shellfish reefs across 13 projects spanning Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland. Reef Builder has demonstrated that the restoration of shellfish reefs at a national scale IS possible, and that the flow-on benefits to people and nature are significant.
