- Our partners at the Intertribal Buffalo Council and Tanka Fund are working to bring buffalo back home to Indigenous lands. 🐂 Buffalo from TNC preserves are transferred by these organizations to Indigenous communities as part of a nationwide movement for buffalo rematriation—a homecoming for these cultural keystone species to reconnect a web of relationships that had been broken for hundreds of years. Since its inception, the council has restored more than 20,000 buffalo across 1 million acres of tribal lands. Buffalo have lived on Taos Pueblo lands for many decades, but the community is now ready to expand their herd and move it to a new area within their tribal land. TNC New Mexico is helping to design a management and grazing plan and fund new fencing and water infrastructure for the herd. The plan includes a monitoring phase that will allow Taos Pueblo and TNC to track the impact of the bison, learning more about how their presence benefits native plant growth and soil health. John Waconda, TNC New Mexico’s Indigenous Partnerships Program Director has collaborated with many of the state’s pueblos, including assisting in the transfer of five buffalo to the Nambe Pueblo as part of the ITBC buffalo restoration movement. - Autumn marks prescribed fire season in New Mexico, where targeted areas are treated with good fire. Prescribed fire efforts make communities and watersheds more resilient and put forests more in line with a natural fire regime. At the beginning of the month, the All Hands All Lands (AHAL) network assisted in 2,725 acres getting burned across two units on two forests. TNC staff, Forest Stewards Guild staff, call-when-needed firefighters and 5 youth corps members (their first!) worked together to complete the burn. The first burn was the North Joaquin Rx on the Santa Fe National Forest Jemez Ranger District. A few days later, the American Creek Rx (1,024 acres) was burned on the Tres Piedras Ranger District of the Carson National Forest—playing a critical part in the Rio Chama Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Project and the El Rito Landscape Prescribed Fire Project area. Most recently, we burned near Black Lake in collaboration with The New Mexico State Land Office, the Forest Stewards and the Angel Fire/Moreno Valley Fire Departments. We look forward to the continuation of another successful burn season! Learn more about prescribed fire at nature.org/WesternFire. 📸: © Fauna Creative

Biodiversity. The rich fabric woven by millions of species and their interactions. Food, air, climate, economies and civilization itself depend on it. You can think of biodiversity as the secret sauce behind all healthy ecosystems, keeping them balanced and resilient. In turn, healthy habitats make our lives livable. 💧Forests filter water through their roots and oysters clean water with their gills. 🌊 Coral reefs and coastal ecosystems absorb the force of storm surges and waves, protecting coastal communities. 🌱 Tropical rainforests, wetlands and mangroves are some of the natural ecosystems that soak up a third of the world’s climate-changing emissions every year. Protecting biodiversity means protecting ourselves, as we are connected to everything living or that has ever lived on this planet. Join us in celebrating and safeguarding the incredible variety of life on Earth. Curious about how you can help? - Tribal Nations play a critical role in addressing water scarcity issues throughout the Colorado River Basin. In 2023, a historic agreement was reached between the Jicarilla Apache Nation, New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (ISC), and The Nature Conservancy, allowing the ISC to lease up to 20,000 acre-feet of water per year from the Nation to benefit threatened/endangered fish and increase water security for New Mexico.
