- In this modern era, many of us can suffer from #InformationOverload (being overwhelmed by the amount of data or constant inundation of data from many sources online or otherwise). Spending time in a natural or green setting is an important strategy to give our minds a rest and recover from information overload. Exposure to nature can help us perform better on tasks that require attention and may help sharpen our brains! See if you notice an improvement in cognitive tasks or if problems you have seem easier to solve after taking a break in a green space nearby and share in the comments
- A huge #ThankYou to everyone who joined us virtually and in-person for #NatureTalks2024 with Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, Sally McGee and Rachael Jay at the Branford House on University of Connecticut campus. The conversation was so encouraging as we discussed ways to protect our oceans. If you weren't able to register before seats sold out and couldn't tune in virtually, we will be sharing the recording of #NatureTalks: The Ocean's Future is Our Future on the TNC in CT's YouTube channel soon. Subscribe today to make sure you don't miss the release! https://lnkd.in/exRkchY2
- We were excited to hear that Yale University Conservation Scholar Nisi Tuitupou had a class with Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson last spring at Bowdoin College. "The course I took with Professor Johnson was called "Communicating Climate Change." It was a seminar-style class with about 15 students that met once a week for three hours. We discussed topics such as media coverage of climate change, general public attitudes towards it, and how climate change news is presented in articles and on television. One of my biggest takeaways from the class was the importance of using art to engage people in the environmental movement. Professor Johnson is such an inspiring professor, especially for students like me, a woman of color pursuing a career in the environmental field. She was an amazing teacher and I was so happy to see her again this past summer at a Yale event. A standout moment for me was when my class nominated me to perform a climate rap at one of her environmental dinner parties. Having my classmates and professor cheer me on as I rapped about electric vehicles was a surreal and fun experience." You can tune in to hear Dr. Johnson speak with TNC's Sally McGee at Nature Talks this Wednesday! 📸: Nisi exploring a TNC in CT preserve by Logan Torres
- Starr Adventures made a special delivery to Burnham Brook Preserve last month! To make our preserves more accessible, our stewardship team is working to provide an all-terrain wheelchair, manufactured by Action Trackchair®, available through reservation by Spring 2025. We made our purchase through Starr Adventures from Ellenville, NY, working closely with owners Sue and Scott Trager and a sister corporation, SOAR, which specializes in outdoor access for people with mobility impairments. Starr will help TNC develop a volunteer program, which will ensure there are people available to host visitors when the chair is made available for public use. 📸: Land Steward Dave Gumbart and Starr Adventures representative, taken by Tebben Gill Lopez/TNC
- University of Hartford Professor Dr. Kat Owens is a plastic pollution researcher, artist, and activist. Her portfolio includes life-sized portraits of animals harmed by plastic pollution by hand sewing film plastic onto canvas. The largest pieces are co-created with the public. Dr. Owens is joining us in the Branford House on Avery Point in Groton, CT for Nature Talks: The Ocean's Future is Our Future where guests will have the opportunity to contribute to her current art project. Her work has been supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Stevens Initiative, The Connecticut Office of the Arts, the Middletown CT Downtown Business District, the National Geographic Society, and the Fulbright Foundation. - Did you know that the term “carbon footprint” was coined by fossil fuel corporations as an attempt to deflect responsibility onto us as individuals? While voting, protesting, donating, and lowering our carbon footprints does help—and certainly helps ease the dread of climate crisis, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson believes we each have special talents—“our superpowers”—that can create the radical changes we need. Watch her TedTalk, How to Find Joy in Climate Action (https://nature.ly/4e5lVQj) and tune in for Nature Talks 2024 to hear her discuss the future of our oceans with TNC’s Sally McGee! There are no more seats available for the event, but you can tune in virtually: https://nature.ly/4e6vyy1

- “Some of these businesses are really small, it’s just one family or a couple of people who are running this small business but it’s their livelihood and when these small businesses are impacted, if there’s a big storm that comes through or if a hatchery has a big failure and they don’t have seed oysters that they’re able to get for their next round of crops it’s really tough…That has ripple effects in the communities where they operate.” ~ Sally McGee The climate crisis looks different for different communities. All along our U.S. coastlines, the effect of warming ocean waters is impacting lives, homes and bottom lines. https://nature.ly/4d2hjsFJoin us at Nature Talks 2024: The Ocean’s Future is our Future to hear a conversation between two climate experts, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and TNC’s Sally McGee, as they discuss what we need to do to save our oceans. Heard on the Half Shell nature.org - As fall approaches and September arrives, most young #PipingPlovers have left their nest. Every year, volunteers gather on coasts like #GriswoldPoint to dismantle the protective string fencing that kept the nests safe from unaware beachgoers over the summer. - Today, we turn to nature to heal, to reflect, and to remember the lives lost and the heroes who emerged on September 11. In nature, we find solace and a space to honor their memory. #NeverForget #September11📸: Laura Shail/TNC
