Che posto occupavano gli animali nell’antichità? Come noi oggi, anche i Greci e i Romani avevano a che fare con cani, cavalli, galline; avevano allevamenti, vivari, acquari, e adottavano pratiche zootecniche. Amavano i loro animali da affezione, mentre ne uccidevano altri e li mangiavano (magari dopo averli sacrificati in onore di una divinità). Conoscevano e usavano animali selvatici o feroci, o esotici come elefanti e pappagalli. Non mancavano, nel loro immaginario, creature aliene che si credeva popolassero paesi lontani, come l’India e l’Etiopia, patrie dei manticora, dei cinocefali e dei grifoni. Quello che per noi sono i dinosauri per loro erano i ciclopi, i pegasi, le chimere, gli uomini-toro. Un affresco suggestivo che restituisce per intero l’esotismo di un mondo scomparso.

The results of the analysis of hair remains from a hunter-gatherer grave from northern Patagonia are presented in this paper. One of the samples analyzed consisted in hair that remained attached to the hide used to manufacture a small pouch left in the burial pit as a funerary offering. The second sample was taken from the inside of the same pouch. The hair taxonomic determination was performed by considering cross-sections of the hairs, the patterns of the medulla, and the shape and disposition of the cuticle scales by microscopic observation of molds of the hair surfaces. Samples were identified as Lagidium viscacia and Homo sapiens, respectively. These results provide the first evidence of both the exploitation of small mammal (Lagidium) hide and the offering of human hair in a grave, among Patagonian hunter-gatherers.

Two experiments were conducted with growing male rats to determine the effects of 120 ppm of dietary sarsaponin (S) on nitrogen (N) metabolism when urea or protein are added to the diet. Growth, feed efficiency, N digestibility and balance, urinary N and ammonia-N (NH3-N), and cecal urease and NH3-N were measured. Growth and feed utilization were unaffected by dietary S. Adding urea or protein to the diet increased apparent N digestibility and increased urinary-N excretion. Urea did not affect N balance, whereas growth, feed utilization and N balance were maximized with 22% compared with either 16 or 28% dietary protein. Urinary NH3-N excretion was decreased by S when urea was added to the diet but was not affected when fed with increasing dietary protein. Nanotechnology is an innovative discipline of science that has revolutionized the way we perceive the dimension and size of a molecule. The micrometric molecules accessed under the nanometric level generate nano-derived particles through which other nanodevices and nano-systems are contrived. Those nanoderived appliances are accommodable in effectuating copious different functions like physiological and biochemical processes in livestock species. The wide application of nanotechnology in animal science seems to be fateful unless and until nano-derived implements are recognized for execution in the field of animal breeding, production, health and management, and so on. The fundamental motivation behinds this article is to provide an insight into the application of nanostructures in the field of animal science to enhance the current frameworks. This review points out the current applications with appropriate measures of divergent nanotechnological particles, devices, and systems in the periphery of animal science.

The egg-type pateros ducks, Anas platyrhynchos domestica, in the Philippines are raised in the traditional semi free-range management system which allows farmers to keep the ducks in flocks as extra activities in between their crop farming routines. This study assessed the follicular development in ducks grown from farms in semi free-range system and evaluated the different conditions of the gonads using the follicular ranks and the frequency of occurrence of follicular atresia. Nineteen ducks from Zamboanga del Sur (9 aged 6-12 months; 10 aged 13-24 months) and 20 ducks from Misamis Occidental (10 each for 6-12 and 13-24 months age group) were dissected and evaluated (n=39). Results showed that the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of 6-12 month-old ducks from Zamboanga del Sur (Group 1) was 0.367% while GSI of the 6-12 month-old ducks from Misamis Occidental (Group 2) was 0.323%. The present study was undertaken to estimate effects of environmental factors onmilk production traits in Red Chittagong Cattle (RCC). A total of 103 milk yield recordsof 45 RCC cows obtained between 2005 and 2009 were analysed. Actual lactation yield,lactation length, daily milk yield and dry period were estimated as 500.7 ± 19.3 kg, 259.6 ±6.2 days, 1.9 ± 0.1 kg and 162.4 ± 7.7 days, respectively. Age and season correctedlactation yield, 305 day milk yield and daily milk yield were estimated as 605.4 ± 22.9,677.1 ± 19.4 and 2.2 ± 0.1 kg, respectively. Bio-sourced substances used for crop protection in natural and organic farming have a positive impact both on human and environment health: plant extracts are effective to stimulate plant defense against pests and diseases, with no toxic effect and they could be classified as basic substances. The chemical characterization of thyme and tansy extracts were carried out with ICP and NMR techniques for the analysis of elemental content and organic components. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH method. Phytostimulant effects of extracts were evaluated on zucchini crop in a preliminary field test. Vegetative plant conditions were assessed by measuring the chlorophyll content. The 1% extracts were chosen for field trial because of their maximum antioxidant activity (over 80%) and their cheapness compared to 2% concentration. A total of 320 finishing pigs (PIC 327 × 1050; initially 98 kg) were used to determine the effects of adding Zn to diets containing ractopamine HCl (RAC) on muscle fiber type distribution, fresh chop color, and cooked meat characteristics. Dietary treatments were fed for approximately 35 d and consisted of a corn-soybean meal-based negative control (CON), a positive control diet with 10 mg/kg of RAC (RAC+), and the RAC+ diet plus 75, 150, or 225 mg/kg added Zn from either ZnO or Availa-Zn. Loins randomly selected from each treatment (n = 20) were evaluated using contrasts: CON vs. RAC+, interaction of Zn level × source, Zn level linear and quadratic polynomials, and Zn source. The Western Honeybee is a key pollinator for natural as well as agricultural ecosystems. In the last decade massive honeybee colony losses have been observed worldwide, the result of a complex syndrome triggered by multiple stress factors, with the RNA virus Deformed Wing Virus (DWV) and the mite Varroa destructor playing crucial roles. The mite supports replication of DWV to high titers, which exert an immunosuppressive action and correlate with the onset of the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 1,3-1,6 β-glucan, a natural innate immune system modulator, on honeybee response to low-titer natural and high-titer experimental DWV infection. As the effects exerted by ß-glucans can be remarkably different, depending on the target organism and the dose administered, two parallel experiments were performed, where 1,3-1,6 ß-glucan at a concentration of 0.5% and 2% respectively, was added to the diet of three cohorts of newly emerged honeybees, which were sampled from a Varroa-free apiary and harboured a low endogenous DWV viral titer. Each cohort was subjected to one of the following experimental treatments: no injection, injection of a high-copy number DWV suspension into the haemocel (experimental DWV infection) or injection of PBS into the haemocoel (physical injury). Control bees fed a ß-glucan-free diet were subjected to the same treatments. Viral load, survival rate, haemocyte populations and pheno-loxidase activity of each experimental group were measured and compared. The results indicated that oral administration of 0.5% ß-glucan to naturally infected honeybees was associated with a significantly decrease of the number of infected bees and viral load they carried, and with a significant increase of the survival rate, suggesting that this natural immune mod-ulator molecule might contribute to increase honeybee resistance to viral infection.

This review briefly summarizes the scientific literature on performance and health of animals consuming feed containing GE ingredients and composition of products derived from them. It also discusses the field experience of feeding GE feed sources to commercial livestock populations and summarizes the suppliers of GE and non-GE animal feed in global trade. Numerous experimental studies have consistently revealed that the performance and health of GE-fed animals are comparable with those fed isogenic non-GE crop lines. United States animal agriculture produces over 9 billion food-producing animals annually, and more than 95% of these animals consume feed containing GE ingredients. The present study comprised of a sample of 150 healthy individuals (75 males and 75 females) studying in various colleges of Delhi. All the individuals were measured for height and hand length. The data thus obtained have been subjected to statistical computation for deriving the regression equations. Bilateral asymmetry in hand measurements were statistically insignificant. Regression equations were derived for right and left hand separately by which living stature may be fairly accurately estimated when a fragmentary or mutilated portion of upper extremity is recovered. Using the regression formula derived in this study, stature can be estimated within the error of +4.0 to 4.6cm from hand length.

Goat farming is an important production sector not only for Greece, but also for other Mediterranean countries, as it contributes to the family economy in rural areas. Despite the importance of goat farming, this sector has experienced economic difficulties due to poor management and increased production costs. The aim of our research is to determine goat farm profitability by surveying goat farmers for revenues, variable costs, and fixed costs of their farms. With the use of Principal Component Analysis, all economic factors contributing to overall production costs are examined, as well as their specific impacts on cost formulation. According to our results, goat farms in Greece are not profitable and they cannot survive without government subsidies. Farm economics and agricultural policies could be leveraged to improve community and environmental outcomes in order for farms to be economically and financially sustainable.

A model able to predict missing test day data for milk, fat and protein yields on the basis of few recorded tests was proposed, based on the partial least squares (PLS) regression technique, a multivariate method that is able to solve problems related to high collinearity among predictors. A data set of 1731 lactations of Sarda breed dairy Goats was split into two data sets, one for model estimation and the other for the evaluation of PLS prediction capability. Eight scenarios of simplified recording schemes for fat and protein yields were simulated. Correlations among predicted and observed test day yields were quite high (from 0·50 to 0·88 and from 0·53 to 0·96 for fat and protein yields, respectively, in the different scenarios). Results highlight great flexibility and accuracy of this multivariate technique.

The study was conducted to determine the effects of different levels of bee venom (BV) administration on the serology and haematology of broiler chicken. After a brooding period of four weeks, sixty birds were randomly allotted into five treatments: Control Treatment (T 0), Treatment 1(T 1), Treatment 2(T 2), Treatment 3(T 3) and Treatment 4(T 4) with twelve birds per treatment, three replicates per treatment and four birds per replicate. T o served as the control experiment, while T 1 , T 2 , T 3 and T 4 were administered with 0.3mg, 0.6mg, 0.9mg and 1.2mg BV per bird respectively through direct stinging. Birds were fed ad-libitum during the brooding period, also the BV administration was done once per week and the administration lasted for a period of six weeks. Results showed that there were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the liver function enzymes examined: Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Alanine aminotransferase (ALT).There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the haematological parameters examined: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets but there was a significant difference (P<0.005) in the level of lymphocytes when compared to the control which had no BV administration. Özet Bu çalışma ham protein ve organik madde kapsamlarının rumen içi parçalanabilirlikleri benzer ancak parçalanma hızları farklı olacak şekilde hazırlanan, eşdeğer enerji ve N içeriğine sahip yoğun yem karmalarının süt sığırlarında süt verimi ve verim özellikleri üzerindeki etkilerinin değerlendirilmesi amacı ile yürütülmüştür. Ardışık iki yıla ait kış sezonu süresince sürdürülen çalışmada 252 baş süt sığırı kullanılmıştır. Mısır (MS) ve ot silajı (OS) temelinde oluşturulan gruplarda, MS grubu hayvanlarının tükettiği günlük rasyonun kaba yem bölümü kuru madde temelinde %80 mısır silajı ve %20 ot silajı içerecek şekilde, OS grubu içinde yine KM temelinde %80 ot silajı ve %20 mısır silajı içerecek şekilde düzenlenmiş, söz konusu karışımlar ad libitum koşullarda tüketime sunulmuştur. Rumen içi parçalanma hızları mısır silajı (SYN-MS) ve ot silajına (SYN-OS) eşgüdüm sağlayabilecek şekilde hazırlanan yoğun yem karmaları, her iki silaj grubunda da süt verim düzeyine göre verilmiş, bu şekilde gruplardaki hayvan materyalinin her iki silaj tipi açısından da eşgüdümü gözeten ve gözetmeyen uygulamalara tabi olması sağlanmıştır. Süt verimi ve verim özellikleri üzerinde silaj tipi ya da yoğun yem karması tipinin etkisinin saptanamadığı çalışmada, OS tüketiminin süt üre düzeyinde artışa neden olduğu gözlenmiştir (P<0.001). Abstract The objectives of this study were to evaluate effects on lactational performance of dairy cows fed with isocaloric and isonitrogenous concentrates that had also similar ruminal degrabilities of crude protein and organic matter but differed in the rate crude protein and organic matter were degraded ruminally. Both concentrates were supplemented to mixtures of corn (MS) and grass silage (OS) (80:20 and 20:80, respectively, on dry matter basis) so that ruminal degradation rate was synchronous either to MS-(SYN-MS) or the OS-(SYN-OS)-dominated silage mixture and asynchronous to the other. During two winter feeding periods, 252 dairy cows were fed on diets consisting of combinations of one of the concentrates that were allocated according to milk yield and one of the silage mixtures fed for ad libitum intake. Neither forage nor concentrate type affected milk or milk component yield, though milk protein content was higher for cows on the MS treatments. Feeding OS mixture resulted in elevated milk urea levels (P<0.001).

Objetivo Comparar los rendimientos en canal de tres genotipos bovinos, Cebú, mestizos Holstein x Cebú y Mambí, criados juntos en un sistema de pastoreo rotacional y moderada suplementación energético-proteica Materiales y Métodos Se utilizaron 30 toros de 29 meses de edad. Los animales se distribuyeron de forma aleatoria, a razón de 10 por genotipo. La investigación se desarrolló en un matadero de la provincia de Matanzas, Cuba. Luego del faenado, se determinó el peso de la canal caliente, entre las tres y cinco horas, el porcentaje de rendimiento en canal con respecto al peso vivo post-desbaste y el rendimiento de carne deshuesada (huesos y grasa) contra el peso vivo final de la canal fría. Resultados El peso de la canal en caliente difirió significativamente (p < 0,05) entre los tres genotipos (220,5; 210,0 y 188,0 kg para Cebú, Holstein x Cebú y Mambí, respectivamente). Two 28-d randomized complete block design experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of concentrations and sources of Zn on growth performance of nursery pigs. Seven stations participated in Exp. 1, which evaluated the efficacy of replacing 2,500 ppm of Zn from ZnO with 125, 250, or 500 ppm of Zn from Zn methionine. A control diet with 125 ppm of supplemental Zn was included at all stations. A total of 615 pigs were used in 26 replicates. Average weaning age was 20.6 d and the average initial BW was 6.3 kg. There were no differences in any growth response among the three supplemental Zn methionine levels fed in Exp. 1. Zinc supplementation from Zn methionine improved ADG compared with the control during all phases (P < 0.05), due primarily to an increase in ADFI. An industry survey and animal experiment were conducted to evaluate the amino acid (AA) compositional variability and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of AA in animal protein by-products fed to growing pigs. Animal protein by-product meals (212) were categorized into 8 groupings (blood meal, chicken by-product meal, chicken meal, feather meal, meat and bone meal, meat meal, poultry by-product meal, and poultry meal) and analyzed for total AA. Amino acid analysis among (e.g., Lys in blood meal averaged 9.20% compared with 2.31% for feather meal, DM basis) and within (e.g., Lys range of 1.54% in blood meal and 1.44% in feather meal, DM basis) the by-product classifications varied as expected, but on average the total AA values were similar to that reported in the literature. Στην περιοχή της λίμνης Κερκίνης του Νομού Σερρών διερευνήθηκε ο χρόνος (%) που αφιέρωναν εποχιακά οι νεροβούβαλοι στη δραστηριότητα της βόσκησης στα λιβάδια και στη γεωργική γη, καθώς επίσης και η συμμετοχή των αγρωστωδών, ξυλωδών και πλατυφύλλων ειδών στη δίαιτά τους. Η μέθοδος της εστιακής δειγματοληψίας εφαρμόστηκε σε έξι ενήλικους νεροβούβαλους κατά τη διάρκεια του 2013. Βρέθηκε ότι οι νεροβούβαλοι παρέμεναν στις βοσκόμενες εκτάσεις μεγαλύτερο χρονικό διάστημα την άνοιξη (8h 52min) και το καλοκαίρι (10h 16min) σε σχέση με το φθινόπωρο και το χειμώνα και αφιέρωναν σημαντικά περισσότερο χρόνο (P<0,05) στη δραστηριότητα της βόσκησης κατά την περίοδο αυτή (373 και 349 min για την άνοιξη και το καλοκαίρι, αντίστοιχα). Ο χρόνος που αφιέρωναν για βόσκηση στα λιβάδια το καλοκαίρι και το χειμώνα (94,9% και 78,8%, αντίστοιχα) ήταν σημαντικά μεγαλύτερος (P<0,05) από το χρόνο που αφιέρωναν στα γεωργικά υπολείμματα (5,1% και 21,2%,
αντίστοιχα). Στα τελευταία, τα ζώα αφιέρωναν σημαντικά περισσότερο χρόνο (P<0,05) για βόσκηση το φθινόπωρο (53,9%) σε σύγκριση με τους λειμώνες (6,0%), οι οποίοι βόσκονταν μόνο την περίοδο αυτή. Οι νεροβούβαλοι αφιέρωναν σημαντικά περισσότερο χρόνο (P<0,05) στη βόσκηση των αγρωστωδών (74,0%) σε σχέση με τα ξυλώδη (21,7%) και τα πλατύφυλλα είδη (4,3%) καθ’όλη τη διάρκεια του έτους.

production, the saccharine and the broom whose
origin Africa and parts of Asia is developing
comprehensively, in many regions of Brazil. This
study aimed, gather information on the origin,
introduction and spread of the sorghum crop in
different regions of Brazil. Sorghum was extensively
grown in the US for the production of syrup or
molasses during the twentieth century, coming to
Brazil in the same way that reached North and
Central America; through the African slaves.
Recently the culture was reintroduced in an orderly
manner in the country, by public research institutes
and universities. The sorghum has demonstrated
great potential for use in feed for dairy cattle, since it
has high productivity, good adaptation to
mechanization and grid versatility and can be used
as hay, grazing, straight cut and silage. Sorghum
cultivation of various species, are very significant in
the semi-arid regions, and not semi-arid of Brazil,
showing good resultas in the production of silage and
grain yield, still standing out for having good
hardiness and adaptability to limiting conditions as
high temperatures and water scarcity of semiarid
regions.

In this work, the aim was to evaluate the existence of spatial association of the municipal average official soybean yield (t ha-1) with agrometeorological data and vegetation indices. The information was observed by ten-day periods, in crop years 2010/2011, 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 in the State of Paraná. Local univariate spatial correlation (LISA index), as well as global bivariate correlation (L statistics) were calculated. With this study, we identified neighboring municipalities with high yield in the West as well as municipalities that are located with low-low yield Northwestern, showing positive spatial autocorrelation (IMG=1), significative (p-value < 0.05). In addition, there were differences between seeding times in different regions, and climate irregularity during flowering periods and grain filling in crop year 2011/2012 throughout the state, which caused a large drop in production in all municipalities of the state of Paraná. Insulin resistance has been suggested to increase the risk of certain diseases, including osteochondrosis and laminitis. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of adaptation to high-glycemic meals on glucose-insulin regulation in healthy Thoroughbred weanlings. Twelve Thoroughbred foals were raised on pasture and supplemented twice daily with a feed high in either sugar and starch (SS; 49% nonstructural carbohydrates, 21% NDF, 3% crude fat on a DM basis) or fat and fiber (FF; 12% nonstructural carbohydrates, 44% NDF, 10% crude fat on a DM basis).
