The generation of spatiotemporal optical wave packets that are impervious to both dispersion and diffraction has been a fascinating challenge. Despite intense research activity, such localized waves, referred to as light bullets, have remained elusive. In nonlinear propagation, three-dimensional light bullets tend to disintegrate as a result of inherent instabilities. Three-dimensional wave packets that propagate linearly have been reported, but

We report the creation of white-light, achromatic Bessel beams using a spatial light modulator and a prism to compensate for the dispersion. Unlike the Bessel beam created by a refractive axicon, this achromatic beam has a radial wavevector and hence an intensity cross-section which is independent of wavelength. The technique also lends itself to the generation of higher order Bessel

The manipulation of a Gaussian laser beam using conical diffraction in a high optical quality biaxial crystal of KGd(WO 4) 2 has been examined in detail with emphasis on the experimental techniques involved and intuitive explanations of the notable features. Two different optical arrangements were used to form the Pogendorff double-ring light pattern in the focal image plane. The formation of both diverging and non-diverging zeroth and first order Bessel beams was investigated. The various intensity distributions and polarization properties were measured and compared with the predictions of well-established theory.

In a simple picture, a Bessel beam is viewed as a transverse standing wave formed in the interference region between incoming and outgoing conical waves. Based on this interpretation we propose an optical resonator that supports modes that are approximations to Bessel–Gauss beams. The Fox–Li algorithm in two transverse dimensions is applied to confirm the conclusion.

Internal conical diffraction produces a superposition of orthogonally polarised zero-and first-order Bessel like beams from an incident circularly polarised Gaussian beam. For right-circularly polarised light, the first-order beam has an optical vortex of charge 1. Upon propagation of the first-order beam through a second biaxial crystal, a process which is termed cascade conical refraction, the generated beam is a superposition of orthogonally polarised fields of charge 0 and 1 or 0 and 2. This spin to orbital angular momentum conversion provides a new method for the generation and annihilation of optical vortices in an all-optical arrangement that is solely dependent on the incident polarisation and vortex handedness.

Abstract: Since 1908, when Mie reported analytical expressions for the fields scattered by a spherical particle upon incidence of an electromagnetic plane-wave, generalizing his analysis to the case of an arbitrary incident wave has proved elusive. This is due to the presence of certain radially-dependent terms in the equation for the beam-shape coefficients of the expansion of the electromagnetic fields in terms of vector spherical wave functions. Here we show for the first time how these terms can be canceled out, allowing analytical ...

Recently, a method for obtaining diffraction-attenuation resistant beams in absorbing media was developed through suitable superposition of ideal zero-order Bessel beams. In this work, we will show that such beams maintain their resistance to diffraction and absorption even when generated by finite apertures. Also, we shall extend the original method to allow a higher control over the transverse intensity profile of the beams. Although the method has been developed for scalar fields, it can be applied to paraxial vector wave fields as well. These new beams can possess potential applications, such as free space optics, medical apparatuses, remote sensing, optical tweezers, etc..

Tunable mid-infra-red radiation by singly resonant optical parametric oscillation based on KTA crystal pumped by multi-axial Gaussian shape beam from Q-switched Nd:YAG laser has been demonstrated. Threshold energy of oscillation at different idler wavelengths for different cavity length has been demonstrated. Single pass conversion efficiency of incident pump energy to infra-red wavelength has also been measured.
