Walter Benjamin’s and Charles Baudelaire’s personage of the flaneur can be interpreted as a representation of the ambivalent attraction to the strange and unknown in the experience of anonymous city life, so characteristic for the modern age. To what extent can we interpret this role of the flaneur – given its essential qualities in these writings – as a representation of world citizenship? The thesis is that the flaneur is more a cosmopolitan in the cultural than in the moral sense of the term. To live up to the demanding moral ideal of world citizenship, the flaneur needs to change: from detached observation to more meaningful forms of inter-cultural engagement. Hence the flaneur offers some clues for the kind of ethos that is required for a cosmopolitan subjectivity as well as for how it falls short.

This is a translation, originally for the use of students studying French history, of the journal of a priest of Bourges who made the transition from minor Catholic cleric to Protestant. His journal illustrates the secular and religious life of the city in terms of, to him, unusual events. It culminates in the siege of Bourges by the royal army in 1562.

This thesis explores encounters in Lima’s inner-city marketplaces as residents’ everyday intersections that exceed the immediate co-presence and imply ongoing negotiations on the shared space and activities together. These lead residents to shape relations and arrangements towards common living, on top of experiences of social and spatial fragmentation in this Latin American city. Encounters and negotiations are framed within the distinctiveness and complexity of market environments, historically accomplishing roles for economic and political participation, as well as social and cultural life in cities. Moreover, in the context of the ‘Gastronomic Boom’ of Peruvian cuisine, food became a central means through which it was possible to approximate these local environments. Two case-study markets in Lima were investigated through ethnographic work, applying experiential, immersive and qualitative methods. These were key in producing information on topics and locations little documented...

Intercultural citizenship seems to benefit from certain generic aspects of city life that carry a negative quality, such as " blasé attitude " or the typical " indifference " of city dwellers. The main part of this essay argues that this observation allows the formulation of a moral minimum—a threshold conception—of intercultural citizenship in the urban setting, namely, what I call side-by-side citizenship. A certain level of indifference makes possible personal freedom and a tolerant multicultural city, although there are more ideal formulations of intercultural citizenship, such as in terms of agonism or cosmopolitanism. However, these more ambitious forms easily become too demanding given the muddle of everyday urban living conditions, which tend to promote mutual reserve and impersonal social relations. A modest and realistic conception of intercultural citizenship could prove crucial in motivating citizens to act according to some minimal standards.

The word ‘mega city’ redefines the city with population density also indicates several challenges which the city dwellers have to deal with on regular basis. Dhaka is a mega city that has been dealing with plentiful challenges. In recent time, the city authority restricted the street hawkers in many places as a solution for the betterment of the city. In collaboration with Work for Better Bangladesh trust (WBB) the research project called ‘Walkers and Hawkers Issues and Proposals’ began.
