Abstract: In modern concepts for development of Personal health systems (PHS) one of the main directions in research is the employment of mobile communications, Internet and Web technologies. On the other hand, the advances in bio-sensors technologies and applications enable continuous efficient monitoring of some physiological parameters of a patient. In this paper the general model of development of a PHS ’ architecture, consisting of three main components – Body sensor network, Patient server and Point-of-care server is described. The paper presents an overview of current stage in possible architectures for realization of PHS, discussing various models, strategies and specifics. It is focused on discussions that summarize the trends for realization of Web-based multi-tier PHS. An example for implementation of wireless intelligent bio-sensor for monitoring of heart and respiration rates is presented.

Th e objective of this research paper is to examine and assess the correlation between the economic expansion of European Union member states and the escalating rate of motorization, which subsequently leads to road accidents resulting in signifi cant loss of life and injury. A statistical analysis of economic growth, the rate of motorization, and road incidents in EU member states from 2010 to 2020 constitutes the research methodology. Th e research paper employs a quantitative approach to analysis and comparison. Th e research paper demonstrates how an increase in the number of motor vehicles in EU member states contributes to road accidents and human mortality. Varying degrees of economic development are associated with disparities between the rate of motorization expansion and the decline in fatalities. Because the rate of increase in motor vehicle usage surpasses the decline in fatalities per motor vehicle at low-income levels. At increased levels of income, the opposite occurs. Practical Implications: Th is research paper illustrates the importance for road traffi c safety authorities to be aware of safety performance indicators and to incorporate them into legislative deliberations in order to bolster the European Union's "zero victims" objective and provide enhanced protection for motor vehicle accident victims. Originality-Th is paper examines the correlation between motorization rates and fatalities in various EU member states with varying degrees of economic development over the past few decades.

Demographic trends, diversification of geriatric health care service settings, and advances in education and science call for redefining the context and mission of geropsychiatric nursing (GPN) practice. The challenges of providing preventive, restorative, and palliative care for older adults who move across health care and residential settings demand that geropsychiatric nurses be theoretically well grounded, family centered, expert in multiple assessment skills, and clinically adept across the full biopsychosocial spectrum. This article provides “snapshots” of the educational and career paths that led four nurses into GPN practice. Noting that the extant literature is more descriptive of practice models than suggestive of efficacy, the article offers a series of recommendations that emphasize the need for evaluations of GPN practice.

For years, states have been using illusory schemes to maximize federal aid intended for Medicaid services-and then often diverting some or all of the resulting funds to other use. And states have help. Private revenue maximization consultants are hired by states to increase Medicaid claims, often for a contingency fee. We do not know the exact amount of federal Medicaid funds that has been diverted to state revenue and private profit each year, but it is in the billions. The states' revenue strategies take advantage of the matching-grant structure of the Medicaid program. When state funds are spent on eligible health care services, the state can then claim federal Medicaid matching funds-intended to increase the amount of money available for the Medicaid services. For example, Maryland has a fifty percent match percentage for the Medicaid program. It has been suggested in the light of mortality and morbidity rates, and men’s reluctance to seek medical help and advice, that there is a crisis in men’s health. Little is known about men’s experiences of using health care services, despite an emergent UK men’s health movement. NHS Direct, the new telephone advice line, was designed to be more accessible, convenient and responsive to the public’s needs for health care. In-depth interviews with male callers to the service, aged between 29 and 59, reveal that they sought help in their roles as fathers, partners and on their own behalf. Having used it once, they anticipated doing so again. Their learning about health matters, from both the formal structure and the informal agenda of the telephone consultation, suggests the potential of men’s use of this service for ‘normalizing’ help seeking by men, and thereby for longer-term improvements in men’s health.

Partners for Health Reformplus is USAID’s flagship project for health policy and health system strengthening in developing and transitional countries. The five-year project (2000-2005) builds on the predecessor Partnerships for Health Reform Project, continuing PHR’s focus on health policy, financing, and organization, with new emphasis on community participation, infectious disease surveillance, and information systems that support the management and delivery of appropriate health services. PHRplus will focus on the following results: s Implementation of appropriate health system reform. s Generation of new financing for health care, as well as more effective use of existing funds. s Design and implementation of health information systems for disease surveillance. s Delivery of quality services by health workers.

This article considers whether greater attention to the art and the science aspects of organizational change can help achieve a smoother transition to future regionalized health services in Canada. The reported problems with the current system are considered and a key-point checklist based on the art and science of transformation is proposed for adoption by health system planners. It is argued that this will help address the current shortcomings of Canada's health system and improve the future delivery of Canada's health care services.

Research question: What types of non-communicable geriatric cases attend the Railway referral hospital in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh? Objectives: 1) To identify the various morbidities in the geriatric population attending the OPD of the selected hospital. 2) To observe the sex-wise difference of such morbidities among the studied subjects. Study design: Hospital-based cross-sectional study. Study location: the North Central Railway Hospital of Allahabad. Study duration: 1 year (from March, 2010 to February, 2011). Material and method: Medical record analysis, clinical history taking and examination using a pretested questionnaire. Results: Total 467 respondents were included in the study (235 males and 232 females). Three-fourth of the subjects rated their health status as either ‘mostly’ or ‘somewhat’ healthy. Nearly 62% had vision abnormality while 15.2% suffered from impaired hearing. Respiratory (43.5%) and musculoskeletal symptoms were among the most commonly observed morbidities. Diabetes mellitus and overactive bladder syndrome were significantly commoner among males while respiratory complaints, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and low back ache were more common in females as compared to males. Discharge per vaginum was the most common gynecological problem noted (41.4% of all female patients). Conclusion: The study identifies the common morbidities in geriatric hospital attendees and underscores the need for appropriate resource allocation and arrangements.
