Image processing techniques are now widely spread out over a large quan-tity of domains: like medical imaging, movies post-production, games... Au-tomatic detection and extraction of regions of interest inside an image, a volume or a video is challenging problem since it is a starting point for many applications in image processing. However many techniques were developed during the last years and the state of the art methods suffer from some drawbacks: The Level Sets method only provides a local minimum while the Graph Cuts method comes from Combinatorial Community and could take advantage of the specificity of image processing problems. In this thesis, we propose two extensions of the previously cited methods in order to soften or remove these drawbacks. We first discuss the existing methods and show how they are related to the segmentation problem through an energy formulation. Then we intro-duce stochastic perturbations to the Level Sets method and we build a more

Recently there has been renewed interest in circuit switching because of the ease of building very high capacity optical circuit switches. This poster studies the performance, as seen by the end user, of an Internet that uses circuit switching instead of, or in addition to, packet switching. TCP represents over 90% of current Internet traffic, which makes our usage of the network very connection oriented. Therefore, the key performance metric for the end user is the completion time for each connection, which we refer to as response time.On the face of it, simply considering circuit switching as an alternative would seem a pointless exercise; the Internet is packet switched, and was deliberately built that way to enable the efficiencies afforded by statistical multiplexing, and thus it should provide a response time that is faster than that of circuit switching. However, link utilization is low, and falling, particularly at the core of the Internet, which means that statistical multi...

This article describes the technology of the electromagnetic valve made in the LTCC (low temperature co‐fired ceramics). The actuation is supplied by mutual reaction between a 3D coil and a neodymium magnet bonded to flexible membrane. Such solution has many advantages like small power consumption and relatively great attractive forces. The valve is built in a hybrid polymer‐ceramic technology. The microfluidic and coil parts are fabricated in the LTCC technology. The flexible section is manufactured using a PDMS (poly(dimethylsiloxane)) membrane bonded to the ceramic part by plasma oxidation. The magnet is fixed on the membrane surface. The LTCC material was chosen for the sake of chemical durability and possibility of 3D structuration. The PDMS membrane provides simultaneously very good stability and high flexibility.

The objective of this study is to use two hydrological indices (coefficients of variation and immoderation) to analyze the impacts of dam management methods on seasonal daily flow rate change downstream of three dams: Manouane (diversion-type management method), Ouareau (natural-type management method) and Matawin (inversion-type management method). The results show that this change is far greater downstream of the Matawin dam (characterized by an inversion-type management method) than downstream of the two other dams. Moreover, downstream of the Matawin dam, this daily flow rate change increases significantly over time, while decreasing downstream of the two other dams and in natural rivers. Lastly, this change is better correlated with climate downstream of the Ouareau dam than downstream of the two other dams. It is positively correlated with winter and spring temperatures as well as summer and fall rain. Contrary commonly accepted hypothesis, this study shows that the impacts of...

We study the problem of allocating multiple objects to agents without transferable utilities, where each agent may receive more than one object according to a quota. Under lexicographic preferences, we characterize the set of strategyproof, non-bossy, and neutral quota mechanisms and show that under a mild Pareto efficiency condition, serial dictatorship quota mechanisms are the only mechanisms satisfying these properties. We then extend quota mechanisms to randomized settings, and show that the random serial dictatorship quota mechanisms (RSDQ) are envyfree, strategyproof, and ex post efficient for any number of agents and objects and any quota system, proving that the well-studied Random Serial Dictatorship (RSD) satisfies envyfreeness when preferences are lexicographic.

Modifications to valley form due to extreme flooding in the lower 34 km of the Ha! Ha! River were analyzed. Heavy regional precipitation in July 1996 triggered extreme runoff and the catastrophic drainage of Ha! Ha! Lake, producing discharges of 1100 m3/s, 8 times the 100‐year flood. Dominant valley modifications, revealed by comparing preflood and postflood topographies derived photogrammetrically, were related to two large‐scale avulsions; in particular, a deep retrogressive incision which bypassed the 30‐m‐high Perron Falls, exporting 6 × 106 m3 of glacial stratified drift from a 2‐km section of valley and producing massive sedimentation in the reach downstream. Reconstructed maximum flow power values support the existence of a 300 W/m2 threshold for major scouring of the alluvial valley bottom. The evidence highlights the potential for massive scour and fill and reorganization of the long profile, with potentially catastrophic effects on infrastructure, during extreme floods in ...
