This ethnographic piece establishes a political-cultural vista of lantern makers and the thought processes going into the craft. It presents the premise that Pampanga's long history of the practice and selfless development of the Parul craft is reflective of Kapampangan ethnicity, history, and medium for political-cultural thought. It begins with an inquiry into how the giant lantern is expressive of the traits of the Kapampangan; language informs this study's interpretation of the Kapampangan-ness of the lantern. Secondly, it explores the prospect of the giant lantern displaying metaphors for political-cultural expression and storytelling. The research is set on a Geertzian-flavored symbolic & interpretive anthropological framework where understanding another culture is perennially an activity of interpretation; this involves determining explications behind cultural acts through situating events in a particular cultural actor's motives, values, and intentions.

Central to the process of doing archaeology is the necessity for under-standing the chronological sequencing of archaeological entities and past events and understanding the method that was used in doing so. Without a firm grasp of this sequencing, archaeologists would not be able to deal with issues of behaviour-al process and evolution. For this reason, dating the past has been one of the most crucial methodological problems facing archaeologists. Two sources of dating were used in identifying the age of Babo Balukbuk, Porac, Pampanga, Philippines namely: tradeware ceramics dating and radiocarbon dating. The system that I developed that was published earlier will be employed in identifying and docu-menting the tradeware ceramics found in the site. Also, the radiocarbon dates will be used to validate and cross-check the dates of the ceramics. Then, this paper will discuss the results of these dating techniques and their implications and signifi-cance in understanding better the pre...

In 1762, at the height of the Seven Years’ War, Britain’s Royal Navy and East India Company mobilised a motley army of Europeans, South Asians, and Africans and invaded Manila, the capital of Spain’s Asian Empire. The Black Legend blinded the British to the complexities of the real balance of power in the Philippines. The Spanish colonial government quickly raised militias of Spaniards, Mexicans, Chinese mestizos, and indigenous Filipinos who ultimately defeated the British. The loyalties of the soldiers of many nations who converged in Manila could not be taken for granted. This article examines the ongoing bargaining that took place between imperial officials and soldiers, revealing the crucial role that negotiation played in eighteenth-century empire building beyond the Atlantic. War transformed fighting men of many nations into important historical actors who determined the outcome of the Seven Years’ War in the Indo-Pacific world.
