Vacuoles (original) (raw)

Last Updated : 19 Dec, 2025

A vacuole is a membrane-bound organelle composed of fluid fluid-filled space. It is responsible for storing various substances and maintaining cell structure. In plant cells, it helps in maintaining turgor pressure, contributing to the plant's structural support and rigidity. It also contributes to essential cellular functions like regulating cell volume, takes part in digestion, and helps in the breakdown of cellular components.

**Vacuole Structure

The structure of a vacuole in a cell is described as follows:

Characteristics of a Vacuole

The term vacuole means "a space". Vacuoles are enclosed spaces that contain water, inorganic and organic molecules, and enzymes in solution. In some cases, they may also contain engulfed solids.

**Vacuole Functions

Protozoa, plants, algae, and fungi all have a vacuole and perform different functions in each of them. The different functions of a vacuole are as follows:

**Storage

**Turgor or Hydrostatic Pressure

**Exocytosis and Endocytosis

**Defense

**Recycling
