Remarks | Silvery-white metal, lustrous, malleable, and ductile. Resists corrosion, soluble in acids, except concentrated nitric, unaffected by alkalis. Used in alloys, coins, metal plating, batteries, and catalysts.Diagnostic tests: With borax bead test, nickel oxide gives an oxidizing flame bead which is violet when hot and brown on cooling, the reducing flame bead is gray and turbid from the separation of metallic nickel. A solution of nickel becomes pale blue (like copper) on the addition of NH4OH in excess. If an alcoholic solution of dimethylglyoxine is added to an ammoniacal solution, a scarlet precipitate is formed. |
