This paper examines the language policy of two Parisian Sephardic periodicals, Le Judaïsme séphar... more This paper examines the language policy of two Parisian Sephardic periodicals, Le Judaïsme séphardi (1932-1940; 1950-1951; 1953-1966) and Vidas largas (1982-1988), in the aftermath of World War II when Paris became one of the main centers for safeguarding and revitalizing the Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) language and its culture. By using a single tale written by Gina Camhy, a Bosnian Sephardic Jew, that appeared in both periodicals at different times, we pinpoint the differences in the periodicals’ attitude toward the Judeo-Spanish language (ortography, lexical choices and so on) and analyse the motives behind the editorial decisions that guided the publication of these two versions of the same narrative.

I examine two techniques used by the authors of the collections to preserve and disseminate this aspect of Sephardic legacy, namely translating proverbs from Ladino to Serbo-Croatian, and the use of glosses. I also examine the issue of interpreting the proverbs once they appear decontextualised.

The paper focused on the literary contribution/production of two key female writers from Sarajevo, Bosnia: Laura Papo Bohoreta from the first half of he twentieth century, and Gina Camhy, from the second half of the last century.

In this paper, I examine the case of domestication, i.e. judaisation of the Spanish ballad Landar... more In this paper, I examine the case of domestication, i.e. judaisation of the Spanish ballad Landarico by the Sephardic communities of Serbia and Bosnia. Specifically, I analyse how the ballad was used by the two leading Sephardic authors from the former Yugoslavia, Haim S. Davičo (1854-1918) from Serbia and Laura Papo Bohoreta (1891-1942) from Bosnia, in their own original work. I argue that the use these authors make of the ballad reflects the changes their respective communities introduced to the ballad's plot and meaning, as portrayed in other versions collected in the Iberian Peninsula and from among other Sephardic communities. Moreover, both authors depict the context (the place and the time) in which this ballad was performed, thus revealing valuable information about the role ballads (and folklore in general) had among the Sephardim. Particular focus is laid upon the issue of gender and balladry.

En este artículo se analizan los dos tipos de cuentos conocidos como ATU782 «Midas y las orejas d... more En este artículo se analizan los dos tipos de cuentos conocidos como ATU782 «Midas y las orejas de asno», y ATU775 «El rey Midas y el toque de oro» entre los hablantes de judeoespañol. Los dos ejemplos incluidos aquí —uno procedente de Bosnia y publicado por Isak Papo, y el otro de Grecia recogido por Matilda Koén-Sarano— representan ejemplos de estos cuentos, raros en la lengua judeoespañola, y muestran claramente cómo la tradición sefardí continuó su desarrollo hasta finales del siglo XX, incorporando nuevos elementos que no existían en la tradición anterior. Me centro en subrayar cómo estos cuentos han sido adaptados al entorno sefardí y cómo se han introducido cambios sustanciales en el núcleo de ambos, con resultados diferentes.

The treatment of this topic is analysed through a comparison method showing various approaches to the topic that can been seen in the Iberian Peninsula, among the Sephardim and in the Balkans, both among Slavs and Muslims.

La obra de Gina Camhy (1909-1990), oriunda de Sarajevo, representa uno de los últimos vestigios d... more La obra de Gina Camhy (1909-1990), oriunda de Sarajevo, representa uno de los últimos vestigios de la actividad literararia sefardí en el territorio de la antigua Yugoslavia. Consciente del peligro que corría esta herencia familiar, emprendió la difícil labor de anotar cuanto podía del patrimonio judeoespañol en el momento en que éste estaba desapareciendo de su entorno. La descripción de la vida judía de Bosnia, las costumbres y las creencias de su comunidad aparecen como temas principales de sus historias. Su obra literaria apareció en las revistas sefardíes de la época: Le Judaïsme Sephardi, Vidas largas y Aki Yerushalayim. Este artículo pretende aproximarse a la vida y obra de Gina Camhy, que hasta la fecha ha sido desatendida por la crítica, y dar a conocer el corpus literario de esta autora, disperso en las citadas revistas, o en colecciones de cuentos de difícil acceso.

The Sephardim published Judeo-Spanish ballads, tales and proverbs in Ladino in the numerous perio... more The Sephardim published Judeo-Spanish ballads, tales and proverbs in Ladino in the numerous periodicals they produced in Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia. Occasionally, the work of Sephardic authors or collectors would also be published in Serbian regional and local newspapers. In this paper I examine the case of a text in Serbian entitled Ženske Šale (Women’s Jokes) which, in 1885, was published in the Serbian newspaper, Videlo (Light), in which this story was alleged to be a Judeo-Spanish folktale collected by a Sephardic Jew named Haim Davičo. This article demonstrates the tale’s similarity to Tirso de Molina’s short story, Los tres maridos burlados (1624), a connection which has previously gone unnoticed. Through a comparison of the Serbian text with Tirso’s original story, while highlighting the former’s Sephardic cultural traits, this paper shows that Ženske Šale (Women’s Jokes) is actually quite an accurate Serbian rendering of Tirso’s story probably translated directly from the original by Haim Davičo.

Besides their obvious social and political importance, memories also pertain to the most intimate spheres of our individual lives and identities.

El presente volumen, Ovras son onores…, dedicado a la magnífica y queridísima profesora Paloma Dí... more El presente volumen, Ovras son onores…, dedicado a la magnífica y queridísima profesora Paloma Díaz-Mas, reúne diecisiete trabajos originales que componen un libro monográfico y misceláneo sobre la historia cultural, la lengua y la literatura de los judíos españoles (sefardíes) en su diáspora tras la expulsión de España en 1492. El campo de los estudios sefardíes es relativamente reciente y actualmente está en auge internacional, en gran medida gracias al desarrollo de los estudios judíos y el interés por las investigaciones sobre las minorías culturales, las comunidades imaginadas (the imagined communities), los estudios de género o sobre la memoria. Sin embargo, hay una evidente escasez de material con respecto a distintas áreas de dichos estudios. Este volumen pretender arrojar nueva luz y fomentar el conocimiento de la cultura e identidad judeoespañolas, así como contribuir al movimiento de revitalización y conservación de dicha cultura, escrita en una lengua (judeoespañol o ladino) que fue declarada en 2002 por la UNESCO como seriamente en peligro de extinción.

In the twentieth century, various Sephardic authors from the former Yugoslavia took upon themselv... more In the twentieth century, various Sephardic authors from the former Yugoslavia took upon themselves the task of revitalising different forms of Judeo-Spanish oral tradition such as narrative, songs or ballads. These forms were fostered in the language of the Sepharadim, Ladino or Judeo-Spanish, since the expulsion of the Jews from the Iberian Peninsula in 1492. In their diaspora the Sepharadim mainly settled in the Ottoman Empire whose collapse began at the end of the nineteenth century. This disintegration followed later on by the Holocaust resulted in a rapid decline of the Sephardic language and tradition, causing UNESCO in 2002 to declare Ladino a seriously endangered language. In this interdisciplinary cultural study, I examines the efforts of the Yugoslav Sephardic authors to preserve the memory of a culture and a language in decline as their way of constructing their own personal and collective narrative and identity.

It was only in the second half of the nineteenth century that the Ottoman Sephardic authors start... more It was only in the second half of the nineteenth century that the Ottoman Sephardic authors started to create new, secular literature in Judeo-Spanish using Western literary genres as models. The appearance of the novel, theatre or signed secular poetry among the Spanish Jews drastically changed the centuries-long predominant literary stream in the Sephardic milieu, which until then mostly encompassed religious (Rabbinical) works and orally transmitted literature. These new literary tendencies were stipulated by the winds of Westernisation which started to infiltrate the Sephardic communities mainly through the French chain of schools, the Alliance Israélite Universelle.
This papers looks at the main Sephardic poetic figures in Bosnia at the turn of the twentieth century, namely: Moise (Rafael) Atias, Abraham Aaron Cappon, Isak Salom and Laura Papo Bohoreta.

These new literary tendencies were stipulated by the winds of Westernisation which started to infiltrate the Sephardic communities mainly through the French chain of schools, the Alliance Israélite Universelle.
This papers looks at the main Sephardic poetic figures in Bosnia at the turn of the twentieth century, namely: Moise (Rafael) Atias, Abraham Aaron Cappon, Isak Salom and Laura Papo Bohoreta.
