The present paper illustrates the results of a diagnostic investigation performed on the oil on c... more The present paper illustrates the results of a diagnostic investigation performed on the oil on canvas painting “The Glory of St. Barbara” (1680–1688) by Mattia Preti. The painting is located inside the St. Barbara Church in Taverna (Catanzaro, Italy), the city that gave birth to the artist. In situ, non-invasive studies, by applying X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, along with laboratory micro-destructive analytical investigations, by employing electron probe microanalyses (EPMA) coupled with energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and micro-Raman (µ-Raman) spectroscopy, were combined to retrieve the color palette and identify the painting technique and style of the famous master. As a result of this multi-scale characterization, an extraordinary pictorial technique was revealed, enriching knowledge about one of the oldest pictorial traditions outlined by Mattia Preti, and solving doubts still existing about many of his investigated artworks. In this study, a multimethodological analysis involving optical and physical/chemical diagnostic ... more In this study, a multimethodological analysis involving optical and physical/chemical diagnostic techniques and 3D photogrammetric survey was successfully applied, for the first time, on the large oil on canvas St. Michael defeating Evil painting by Mattia Preti, located inside the Church of the Immaculate Conception of Sarria (Floriana) in Malta. Pigmenting agents, binder media, and raw materials were first characterized, both at elemental and molecular scales, through X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), optical stereo microscopy (SM), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main goal was to properly identify the execution technique of this famous painter, the artist’s palette, and possible nondocumented interventions. The 3D photogrammetric survey, on the other side, allowed us to noninvasively evaluate the extension of the areas that experienced restorations, and to properly map the domains of the different canvasses observed. The joints between canvasses suggested that the painting was folded and rolled up. In addition, the employment of a thermal camera gave evidence of the different consolidating material injection points used during the restoration to strengthen the painting. The obtained results offer useful information for the development of optimized restoration and conservation strategies to be applied and provide, at the same time, answers to open questions related to provenance and dating of the investigated artwork.

This paper presents the results of three different approaches applied to the newly-restored titul... more This paper presents the results of three different approaches applied to the newly-restored titular painting entitled The Conversion of St Paul, the main altarpiece in the Mdina Cathedral in Malta. This large, dramatic painting is the work of the Baroque artist, Mattia Preti, known as il Cavaliere Calabrese. Here, we focus on the results of the digital photogrammetric survey that adopts image-based approaches for 2D/3D model reconstruction. The model was used to quantify important features of the painting as well extensions of the areas restored. In addition, portable X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectroscopies were used to non-destructively identify the nature of the painting materials, at the elemental and molecular spatial scales, respectively, with the ultimate goal of reconstructing the colour palette of the artist. Il recente restauro del dipinto ha consentito di ripercorrere la storiografia critica della grand... more Il recente restauro del dipinto ha consentito di ripercorrere la storiografia critica della grande tela, analizzare le vicende conservative e le peculiarità della tecnica esecutiva, ricostruire il contesto storico e artistico nel quale la pala di Ognissanti venne realizzata e il suo significato nascosto. La complessità della composizione cela infatti una sorprendente e inedita interazione fra le numerose figure di Santi, protagonisti di un dialogo per immagini – nuovamente leggibile dopo il restauro – che suggerisce una profonda devozione. In tale contesto, l’armonia del “Paradiso” battistelliano rappresenta il segno del vagheggiato ritorno all’ordine in una terra scossa dai drammatici eventi della fallita insurrezione antispagnola di fine Cinquecento, scaturita dalle idee del filosofo Tommaso Campanella, la cui storia si intreccia indissolubilmente con quella del medico Tiberio Carnevale, committente della pala.

The restoration work on the Cappella d'Italia within the Conventual Church of the Order of St. John is a unique and fully integrated conservation project. It introduced innovative environmental monitoring in the Co-Cathedral to ensure proper scientific solutions. This is about Mattia Preti's work in Malta, the outcome of a project that included the restoration and the study of a few of the most significant works of art by the artist. The data obtained from these interventions, tied up with archival research and attention given to published documents (already known documents) allow us to demonstrate that works from Preti's last Neapolitan phase (1656-58) were actually executed during the early years of his sojourn in Malta, summer 1659, therefore directing new light on the Calabrian artist's painterly activities both in Italy as well as in Malta.

Nel volume, interamente a colori, con testi di Ezio Mattiocco, Sante Guido e Giuseppe Mantella, c... more Nel volume, interamente a colori, con testi di Ezio Mattiocco, Sante Guido e Giuseppe Mantella, cosi come già presentato nel catalogo della mostra tenutasi a Roma (2008), a Chieti e a L'Aquila (2009) dal titolo "Nicola da Guardiagrele orafo tra medioevo e rinascimento", a cura di Sante Guido, si tratteggia la storia del meraviglioso antependium, l'opera più nota di Nicola di Guardiagrele, firmata e datata 1433-1448.
L' antependium decora l'altare maggiore della Cattedrale di Teramo ed è realizzata in argento e argento dorato con 35 formelle, con figure finemente sbalzate e cesellate, narranti la storia della vita del Cristo e 22 lastrine in smalto traslucido con figure di Apostoli e Profeti, tutte riprodotte a piena pagina. Nel volume è inoltre tratteggiata la biografia di Nicola da Guardiagrele, ad opera di Sante Guido, nella quale si ripercorre la vita e si descrivono le moltissime opere di questi che è considerato il più capace e noto artista abruzzese, maestro insuperato nell'arte dell'oreficeria ecclesiastica tra il 1380 ed il 1460

These precious works - a valuable evidence of the early stages of the sculptor’s creative process - were identified in 2008 by Sante Guido and Giuseppe Mantella in the living room of the sacristy of the metropolitan cathedral of Midna. Covered with silver leaf, the reliefs have been restored and revealed the fresh and delicate touch of Cafà, one of the most important sculptors of the Roman Baroque.

Un raro dipinto autografo di Mattia Preti da Malta" la mostra che aprirà i battenti mercoledì 4 novembre, nelle sale del Museo diocesano di Oppido Mamertina, per rimanere a disposizione dei visitatori fino al 10 dicembre.
Il dipinto di Mattia Preti, giunto da Malta ed esposto per la prima volta in Italia, appositamente restaurato da Sante Guido e Giuseppe Mantella, fu realizzato nel 1671 per l'altare dedicato a San Luca nella Chiesa dei Francescani Minori a La Valletta, edificio di culto che venne interamente riedificato e decorato per volontà Gran Maestro Gregorio Carafa. L'opera de La "Santissima Trinità" raffigura Dio Padre che sorregge il corpo morto di Cristo; entrambi sono vegliati dalla colomba dello Spirito che scende dall'alto portando la luce della Grazia. Nel comporre l'immagine Mattia Preti si servì di un taglio diagonale, creando un cono prospettico che enfatizza la drammaticità della scena; le braccia aperte di Dio accolgono Cristo con un gesto che è insieme la rassegnata presa d'atto degli eventi, ma anche l'affettuosa condivisione del destino del Figlio. La costruzione in tralice consente, inoltre, di modulare gli effetti della luce con il digradare dei piani verso il fondo. Il volto del Padre o il busto ignudo di Cristo appaiono così investiti da un chiarore diffuso, mentre suggestivi effetti di chiaroscuro caratterizzano la mano destra di Dio, che quasi si perde nell'ombra, o il volto di Gesù reclinato su un lato". "La Santissima Trinità - è detto in un comunicato - appare dunque come un capolavoro assolutamente compiuto della maturità dell'artista e una 'possente meditazione sui misteri del sacrificio e redenzione di Cristo' come ebbe a scrivere nel 1999 John Spike, il più attento studioso della materia, nel fondamentale catalogo generale delle opere del pittore calabrese".
Le recenti operazioni di restauro hanno confermato l'autografia del dipinto sia per la rilevanza della qualità pittorica, che grazie al rinvenimento dell'acronimo FMP sul retro della tela. La sigla - che sta per Fra' Mattia Preti - costituisce la firma dell'artista, cavaliere dell'Ordine Gerosolimitano. Il dipinto rappresenta un rarissimo esempio di opera autografa: le iniziali sono accompagnate da un simbolo eseguito con un'unica pennellata che ripropone il "nodo di salomone" o una elaborazione grafico-decorativa del caduceo, simbolo della medicina e possibile riferimento alla figura di San Luca, protagonista della pala maggiore dell'altare dedicato alla Confraternita degli Artisti, già esposto nel 2013 presso L'Accademia Nazionale di san Luca a Roma. 1- The Major Vatican Cross Reliquary is a precious testimony to the refined techniques of Byzantine Imperial goldsmiths in the centuries at the turn of the year 1000. The artwork has been analyzed down to the smallest details and its technical characteristics have been thoroughly investigated. It has been deprived of some of its decorative elements over the centuries, namely the precious stones and pearls embellishing its terminals, replaced by other extremely refined artifacts in the XVI century.

2-An excursus into the production of Cross Reliquaries in the first- and middle-age Byzantium allows placing the examined artwork into a precise context. Some artworks inspired by the same culture are significantly similar in typology and technology used for the Major Vatican Cross Reliquary, which enables the establishment of a temporal relationship and, therefore, to date it to the end of the X century. Moreover, disassembling the artifacts and analyzing the techniques used to produce the refined decorative motifs, along with comparing them with those resorted to in the production of coeval artworks, allowed the formulation of a more precise hypothesis on the period it dates back to; that is the Reign of Emperor Romano II (959-963).

3- All the necessary phases of the restoration works carried out on the Cross Reliquary are hereby outlined. More precisely, its dismantling allowed the investigation of its shape, dimensions as well as of the techniques resorted to in the production of the elements that make up an assemblage comprising of about twenty fragments in fusions with almost pure gold, for a total weight of 756 grams. The same investigations were also carried out on the shrine by Filippo Borgognoni in 1837.

The discovery of a little-known masterpiece by the goldsmiths of Abruzzo

An analysis of the cross of Sant’Eusanio in its various components and the context within which its creator worked, allows us to identify in the inscription crediting ‘Amico di Antonio di Notar Amico’: HOC OPUS/FECIT AMICUS AN/TONII NOTARII AMI/CI DE SULMONA, none other than the greatest embossing goldsmith of the school of Sulmona, in central Italy. While his fame was overshadowed by that of the famous Nicola from Guardiagrele, the supreme master of the art in Abruzzo, this latter figure arguably learned from the technical quality of the embossing and the infinite compositional possibilities of the artist behind the cross of Sant’Eusanio. This work, only really known to scholars of the subject, deserves greater consideration as it really is the finest, best executed and most representative example of the entire 14th and 15th century output of the goldsmiths of Abruzzo. The uniqueness of the cross of Sant’Eusanio, compared to contemporary examples, is demonstrated by its monumental size, the artist’s rich decorative repertoire, with new iconographic solutions and an extraordinary embossing technique. The work consists of a latin cross made from a wooden structure covered entirely in gold-plated silver, embossed and featuring decorations in polychrome glazes, on a complex three-fold knot made from pierced copper foil, covered in gold. For stylistic and historical reasons, it is dated to around the earliest years of the fifteenth century, although its stamped mark ‘SUL’ can usually be dated between 1406 and 1429.

sono custodite una coperta di messale in oro, perle, gemme e avorio e una lampada votiva in oro e gemme, realizzate
entrambe nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento dallo Studio Castellani, la più nota bottega di gioiellieri romani
del XIX secolo, rinomata per il gusto antiquariale delle sue originali produzioni. Le due opere, vennero ideate
ispirandosi alla tradizione orafa antica reinterpretata dall’abilità creativa dei Castellani: la lampada votiva è realizzata
in uno stile essenziale, fatto di sequenze geometriche e seriali con pietre colorate tipiche della cosiddetta
componente barbarica “longobarda”, mentre la coperta di messale venne pensata unendo alla preziosità dell’oro
e delle gemme, il delicato decoro dei mosaici “bizantini”. Entrambe costituiscono una rarità nel vasto panorama
di manufatti formato prevalentemente da diademi, monili, spille, suppellettili, in quanto testimoniano della
produzione di una classe di oggetti di uso liturgico, estremamente rara e ad oggi limitata a pochissimi esemplari
noti. Il recente restauro ha fornito nuovi elementi sulla qualità dei materiali e sulla tecnica esecutiva, mentre
una serie di documenti inediti, rintracciati in tale occasione, ha consentito di ricostruire nel dettaglio i momenti
della realizzazione delle due opere, fi n dalle prime fasi ideative.

The long and precise restoration project, which went on for more than two years, has rendered the funeral monument realised by Pollaiolo readable again in its infinite details, allowing us to understand the different phases of the realisation of the work: from the creation of the models in wax and the resulting bronze casts, right up until the diligent work of chisel and burin of the final finishing. Once the surfaces had been liberated of their thick layer of black, applied in the early Seventies during the last century to cover the processes of corrosion of the metal, some preliminary diagnostic research and an attentive observation of the single casts have in fact led to a persuasive reconstruction of the chronological sequence of the work and the techniques used. We can decipher how, from the initial experimentations, not lacking in errors but skilfully camouflaged, the artist reaches technical perfection and the well-balanced composition of the metal alloy which is ideal for the refined quality of the modelling work and for obtaining the desired chromatic variant. To the monument for Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, in fact, Pollaiolo gives the same attention and technical care usually reserved to the tiny and minute craft of the goldsmith, successfully applying his experience in that area to the completion of a work of monumental dimensions, enormously complex in its technique and material richness.

The Crux Vaticana and ‘Byzantine’ Rome
The Crux Vaticana, the reliquary-cross of the passion of Our Lord, is as much a celebrated object as it is an enigmatic one. Its long-awaited restoration has finally allowed us to obtain a clear idea of its original state and subsequent alterations. Evidently a work of imperial patronage - from its ostentatious text which records the pious gift of the emperor Justin and his consort, as well as their images (significantly in the gesture of prayer) - we can consequently date the object (565-578) and define its place (Constantinople). It is a key work of reference among the silver objects produced in Byzantium in the 6th c., especially in the context of their often controversial attribution to Costantinople or Syria. Even if some of its iconographic choices (e.g. the duplication of the image of Christ, or the imperial garb) and stylistic comparisons with this work may still cause controversy, its genuine nature can no longer be denied.
The Cross was sent by the imperial couple to Rome, the city of the martyrs, whose most recent works of religious patronage had aligned it appropriately with the empire’s new capital. These monuments and the Crux Vaticana still testify powerfully today both to the links between Rome and Costantinople and to the faith of this pious emperor and of his wife.

New data and technical observations emerging from restoration operations

The Crux Vaticana, a prestigious testimony to the skills of the Byzantine goldsmiths kept in the Treasury Museum of Saint Peter’s Basilica, represents a rare example of imperial patronage still in existence. Thanks to the preliminary phase of studies and to the subsequent works of recent restoration, the lively debate over its original consistency and the authenticity of the cross is today met by convincing responses and new certainties about its modification and substitution. Furthermore, on the basis of prime documents and images and following valuations of the materials that constitute the cross and its decorative elements, it has been possible to reattach the lost crown of pearls around the reliquary and add once again single pearls on its front, in an act of partial restoration. Whilst respecting the balance between original appearance and historical manipulation, this act helps us to better perceive the harmonious composition of the significant sequence of gemstones which are placed in a precisely alternating chromatic sequence.

A Latin inscription carved in Constantinople

The inscription on the Crux Vatican qualifies the object as a donation to the city of Rome from the emperor Justin II and his wife Sophia, rightly mentioned as partner. The use of the Latin language, known in Constantinople well into the period of late antiquity, and the uncial style of writing “of type b”, adopted for the legendary Byzantine coin, prove the substantial authenticity of the cross, which, before becoming part of the Treasury of Saint Peters, was perhaps kept at least initially in the church of Santa Maria Antiqua, a palatine chapel in Rome dating to the time of the Byzantine duchy.
