One of these people was Amy Wilkinson who developed a notation for the blind in Chinese cities. It was first applied through a group of young blind boys
who travelled Great Britain and were obviously of extraordinary musicality. Contemporary newspapers were full of praise. However, the notation and memory help used now in local
choirs of the elderly who practice weekly in their community rooms is far different. The
outcome is surprisingly equally praised. At least in the narratives of the choir members and the volunteers, who accompany these activities. Having lived over 8 years in crowded Shanghai neighbourhoods and overcoming endless difficulties in a multi-age and multi-abled group of
people, the author wants to point out the missing understanding of special needs in social entities and suggest a list of ethical questions that may challenge a common musicology and the integration of music therapy as an aid. Finally, the question which overshadows all previous
questions is: For what do we do all that in musicology? For a deeper understanding of oneself.

The data are used to show tendencies and to support different perspectives on the arts in China, of which most play an important indicative role within urban spaces. The shift towards a claiming language, in this case in widely accessible English, has to be proven or to be refused. Although those events and performances serve a specific current strategy, which can be briefly explained, the arts are officially seen as a communication and representing tool. A number of discussion points and an example about this may help clarify.

People in China say 'song', but they may mean "music and dance" or they just mean all consciously produced sounds they are confronted with in their daily lives, such as rap coming out of a technical device or the noise of birds around a trash bin. One of the main ways to overcome these shortcomings is to break up with conventional habits of holding on to assumptive statements without having clarified their purpose and diversification from sources taken as 'the original ones'. Millions of songbooks and text collections are published and distributed. They are offering easy teaching and easy performance on stages in front of an unknown audience. Using songs and other 'easy-to-teach'-items for presenting research goals or identity proofs could lead to many misunderstandings in more complex situations of life, which absorb over time many different appearances of sound, a large part of which is commercial output. This cannot be ignored and should inspire further discussions in a qualitative approach. Zhuang songs are but one of many examples that can be taken to give proof of the language impact on singing habits.

Some view it to be an entertaining place to visit on an off day. Now, more often that people are not in favor of zoos anymore, for even though the idea of seeing wildlife in person is attractive, it is also sad to see these animals encaged and even more so under less optimal conditions. The purpose with this article is to investigate the impact of music and other human sounds in animals subject to captivity in the zoo, and if and how it creates changes in their behavior. The following question motivated the study: Is it beneficial for zoos to introduce music into these animals' habitat? To find an answer, a joint team went to the Shanghai Zoo on four different occasions to collect data, conduct interviews with visitors and caregivers, and observe both select animals and humans. The selection was done according to continuous availability. The results are presented in the paper.

The main focus is the emerging transcendency between people living in this region and their deriving outcomes over a longer period of time.

The biggest city in Vietnam, Sài Gòn, officialy called Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh (胡志明市/Ho Chi Minh City), is a large conglomerate of cultural features from all over the region. Wars and migration shaped the way of life in this city. The growing space is a marketplace of emotions and goods as well as of sounds and movements. When doing fieldwork in the years 1983-1999, I audiovisually documented randomly selected days and described events, people, and processes I observed. Among these special days was the one day when General Vũ passed away. He lived in the same small lane as I and I could see all the single steps undertaken by the family and his former colleagues after he passed away. He has been a military authority who was a Vietnamese Chinese living in this city. I felt being part of the people surrounding this incident throughout the entire day since they dealt with me as if I am a normal neighbor. The lane I lived in was inhabited by Chinese descendants though it was not in Chợ Lớn (大市场/Big Market), in Chinatown. The families spoke Mandarin at home and used Vietnamese only as a second language. This document shows more than any other analyses that Chinese people had a very strong impact on every detail in this large city, its rhythm, and its way of communication prior to the arrival of smartphones and other transiting technology. In result, this paper draws a picture of life in the light of the Chinese diaspora settling and arranging their culture in Sài Gòn. At the same time, this paper deals with the understanding of Chinese cultural implications among the Vietnamese living in this city and working with the Chinese heritage as a historicized and symbolic culture. Most interesting is the multiple conversion of musical meanings through the way how sophisticated music traditions of the Vietnamese elite are categorized and memorized. The day when General Vũ went to heaven initiated a deeper search for the transformation of these traces within a host culture and finally questions its general singularity.

Ritual practices of different people are a huge resource of these habits that are found all over the world. This research paper will focus on the role of instrumental music in guiding these sacrifices among selected communities inhabiting Southeast Asia's mainland. Through a multi-perspective observation this research aims at showing order principles, musical requirements, and their variability, which will be analysed and discussed. Long term field work and participant observation over a specific period of time are the basic preconditions for this research. In addition, this research is also to question basic principles of conveying research outcomes and the use of well-established research tools in order to categorize and identify types of musical and ritual behaviour. The perspective of food offerings may shift the focus from musicality within rituals to the focus on social digestion in the context of sustaining communities.

Most of the poems and stories are rather judgmental and moralizing and use the language of academics. But the poems and stories are true and show in a lively manner how important these unpretentious exchanges were. The poems at presented at the beginning of the book deal with different topics and reflect changes in relationships and goals set by the younger students and the older teacher.
The entire book is to be read in leisure times and is not intended to be analysed. The period of writing spans be-tween the years from 2016 to 2024. During this time, the teacher has changed the workplace and had to suddenly separate from former students.
Working out the poems took often longer than writing the short stories. This is mentioned as a warning. Poems are neither simple in their construction nor easy to produce. However, this small book can be enjoyed by eve-ryone who is able to read.

Looking back, each of the articles was motivated by a conflict the author experienced. All articles were trying to answer questions. However, the most sensitive sections of these articles follow the gaze of an observer who is incurably interested in cultural and social aspects of the fact that the accumulation of knowledge through sound and audiovisual documents is crucial to the survival of human communities and their environment.

The ghazal exists in manifold cultures all over Asia, Africa, and Southern Europe, and is intimately connected to Islam and its periphery. In each region, ghazals have been shaped into other expressions using imported features and transforming them into ‘local art’. In the Malay world, ghazals come in various shapes and with different meanings.

‘The song, so old’ is the song that came before the proliferation of mass media. The first ghazals that were heard in the Malay world might have been those ghazals performed by Hindustani musicians traveling in Southeast Asia. However, later on, the ghazal’s development was additionally triggered by mass media, with technological progress enhancing change in urban entertainment and introducing new sources of further adaptations. In this context, the second half line of the lyrics mentioned, ‘and yet still famous’, means that despite being old, the song is highly regarded as an art in itself. Malay ghazals are still attractive and musically demanding. They were traditionally not performed for mass appeal, but, rather, for a small knowledgeable audience that valued musical refinement and taste.

The Silk Road was already an important topic in the history of ICTM colloquia. This is the fourth colloquium on "Musical Instruments along the Silk Road" held by Shanghai Conservatory of Music after "Plucked Lutes of the Silk Road: The Interaction of Theory and Practice, From Antiquity to Contemporary Performance" (October 2016), "Double Reeds of the Silk Road: The Interaction of Theory and Practice from Antiquity to Contemporary Performance" (November 2018), and "Drums and Drum Ensembles of the Silk Road" (November 2020).
The programme committee consisted of Xiao Mei (China), Pornprapit Phoasavadi (Thailand), Razia Sultanova (UK/Uzbekistan), Jasmina Talam (Bosnia & Herzegovina), Manfred Bartmann (Austria/Germany), Saule Utegalieva (Kazakhstan), and Gisa Jähnichen (China/Germany). The local arrangement committee for this colloquium consisted of some faculty members and students at Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
This colloquium comprised presentations by 18 scholars from Lithuania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Malta, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Germany, the United States, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Canada and China: Ahmad Faudzi Musib, Arthur Borman, Chinthaka P. Meddegoda, Gisa Jähnichen, Palmer Keen, Long Fei, Han Mei, Hans Brandeis, Henry Johnson, Lana Šehović, Jasmina Talam, Xiao Mei, Cui Xiaona, Chu Zhuo, and Xiong Manyu. Five sessions dominated the programme: 1) Musical Bows and Zithers in Europe; 2) Southeast Asian Cases; 3) Regional Studies; 4) The Long Way to the Zithers; 5) The Musics and Ecology of Bowed Zithers in China and East Asia.

One may find contributions of Rastko Jakovljevic, Ahmad Faudzi Musib, Choduraa Tumat and Bernard Kleikamp, Hoh Chung Shih, Huang Wan, Gisa Jähnichen, Liu Xiangkun, Sulwyn Lok and Andrew Filmer, Chinthaka P. Meddegoda, Nishadi Prageetha Meddegoda, Christopher A. Miller, Renzi, Nicola, Timkehet Teffera, Xue Tong, Adilia Yip, and Zhong Wei Cheng. All had to say something very important either about sound manipulation or about musical instruments of humans as part of nature. Or did anyone know before that Jimi Hendrix manipulated his sound effects or how waza trumpets of the Berta are quickly tuned and which instruments accompany a joik in reality? These, and many other questions can be answered through reading the articles compiled in this volume. They celebrate diversity in their own way.

After some years of experience, the editors decided to also leave specific emphasizing to the authors as they may know best of their subjects’ features. In the long term, these emphasizing patterns using italics or various diacritic signs can change and deliver study materials when observing the status of specific topics. This is to ensure diversity in representation. Along this way of thoughts comes the approved introduction of the authors’ names in their local writings if there is a personal wish and a chance. Those local writings are as far as possible considered in the references.
Many thanks go to all contributors, their patience and careful control, the publisher, the reviewers, and the editors.

Right the first topic is part of the basic ideas to this journal: combining knowledge of different people with historical insights from a specific current perspective and using contemporary analytical tools. The second contribution is of a young scholar who is determined to deliver better practical outcomes in solving technological issues in recording historically relevant music.
The contributions 3, 5, 6, and 7 dispute historical shifts in the perception of minorities from the perspective of regional majorities. The contribution 4, 8 and 10 try to shed light on musical features developed by specific groups of people at different times who are aware of their spatial or social changes. The reviews contain an event, a publication, the life work, and a specific repertoire. The contributors to this issue come from seven different countries using at least eleven different languages during their studies. The order of contributions does not reflect on their qualitative hierarchy. It is to attract wider interest and to embed topics in their context. Some authors share the same workplace or are alumni of the same institution, yet those contributions can be very different. It is in the scope of the journal to not imply any individual or institutional typicalities. This approach is to invite more scholars to explore new issues or to approach with new views their core research.

It is a strong witness that human cultures have never been created in seclusion. The richness of drums and drum ensembles including their repertoires are also connected to long-term exchanges in military affairs, trades, and religions of various peoples. Despite an obvious prevalence of drums among all peoples around the world, their understanding and their repertoires vary due to different contexts. In actual historical circumstances of both commercial trades and cultural exchanges along the Great Silk Road, people in most regions took them as a sectioned relay. Therefore, studies of the musics on the Silk Road should pay attention to the multiple flows of knowledge between numerous distinctive regions in the narrower geographical and temporal scope. ___________________ The editors, Prof. Dr. Xiao Mei and Prof. Dr. Gisa Jähnichen, are both working at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. We offer five papers, written by Jimenez, Hernandez, Musib, and Jähnichen, that emerged from an international workshop about Safeguarding Strategies of Sound Archives in the Pacific Region held in Shanghai, November 2019, which extended the scope of regional boundaries regarding an important matter of dealing with the history and future of performing arts. The papers following these first five papers deal with various aspects of sound, either as part of historical artifacts (Correa), social movements (Korum), vocal expressions (Lin Zhi), or as instrumental meanings (Long Fei).
In the review section, there are three other contributions. One is about the role of ethnomusicologists in ethnographic museums (Lewy), followed by a review of a quite recent publication in the Indian research tradition (Jähnichen), and an overview about local music research in the Vietnamese Province Quảng Ngãi (Nguyễn Thế Truyền).
From now onwards, AEMR-EJ, will also be distributed as printed issue, published by LOGOS Berlin. Earlier editions are only available online. For the first time, there are 3 Vietnamese scholars included who are working on very different projects. Also, all different academic presentations prove that the outcome of research does not principally depends on a standard design of these researches. This issue is, therefore, an invitation to all scholars interested in music from, within, and between Asia and Europe, to explore their own possibilities. The review section is not less diverse. The book review being the central point of this section is surrounded by reviews about events and detailed observations that contribute to an open-minded discourse about music and its role in society.
Issue 4 of AEMR-EJ appears with some modifications. In this issue abstracts, keywords, short biographical data or affiliation(s) of the author(s), and the author’s(s’) contacts are included in the article or review and not put as an extra file. Also, video and sound supplements are referred to in the references. Since these supplements are widely distributed, it is useful to try an opposite approach by linking the articles or reviews to the already existing video and sound files.

The authors of this volume come from all continents and represent a broad spectrum of professions... more The authors of this volume come from all continents and represent a broad spectrum of professions in the field of organology. Their unifying idea is the care of musical instruments all over the world, not only those instruments that may appear interesting for commercial re-use or exploitable as symbols of traditions. They are organised in the "International Council for Traditional Music" and form the "Study Group on Musical Instruments". As one of the most recent research areas within the humanities, the 22nd symposium of this study group was to initiate a dialogue on the relations between musical instruments and the perceptions and/or sensory interpretations and their paradigms such as sound, smell, touch, taste, and the vestibular sensory systems. Moreover, this topic should also help to investigate correlations between musical instruments, their physical and auditory specificities with aspects of proprioception and synes-thesia, and further expand on the phenomena of musical instruments as mediators of spirituality. The second topic of this volume covers the significance of musical traditions, instruments and repertoires as constituents of their mobilities, localities and colonisation including re-and de-colonisation, or place consciousness. Not only that but the second topic also follows the transfigurations of the musical instruments and repertoires as mediators of migrations, displacements and colonisation and both temporal and spatial changes, tracking influences on the representation, contexts or emerging music aesthetics.

The following two articles by Nishadi Meddegoda and Frank Ong deal with sources and practices of popular music in Sri Lanka and Malaysia from methodically different perspectives. The last contribution of Xiao Mei is a personal essay that helps understand a number of issues regarding music education and traditional music in contemporary China. Additionally, some selected papers on new research subjects were included. The first theme included research, field notes, and reports on local features of musical instruments regarding their ergology, sound quality, and visual aspects that are modified over various time periods in order to expand the local market, to resist the global market, or to accommodate diverse functionalities in the world of ‘world music’. The second theme asks for the permissibility of instrumental sound in society. This included many sub-topics ranging from executive laws to aesthetic concepts regarding selected musical instruments, instrument makers, and instrumentalists in general. Also, hierarchies in ensembles and orchestras may play a role in determining various aspects of permissibility. Gender, age groups, racial and social perspectives are discussed in this context.

Upon the invitation of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the State Conservatory of Ankara, the two ICTM Study Groups “maqām” and “Music in the Arab World” held a Joint Symposium in Ankara, December 17-21, 2014 under the general topic “Maqām traditions between theory and contemporary music making” divided into the five topics on different and related subject matters.
The subjects proposed were of mutual interest and with their broad thematic approach they were relevant to the region that stretches from North Africa via Near East to Central and South East Asia. The joint meeting aimed at connecting discussion on theoretical and practical, analytical and historical issues of music with those on current contexts such as problems of transmission of traditions and their performance through modern teaching or problems of the impact of politics on traditions.
The Ankara symposium was well-attended by interested scholars, students and artists from Algeria, Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Netherlands, Oman, Russia, Turkey and Uzbekistan. From total of 33 contributions presented in form of lectures, presentations or panel discussions, the 21 papers compiled in this volume reflect the diversity of rewarding subjects and variously designed investigative methods deriving from different scientific traditions.

We are looking forward to work from face to face although there will be some remote attendees as well.
Our call for papers is going out very early to allow enough time to get prepared for all cases. Please, note that the time period to submit the finalized papers (that have been discussed in the Q&A parts) after the symposium will be kept short. Also, note that we do not offer the usual topic "New research" as we expect that all submitted proposals will offer new insights. Please submit your abstract only if you are sure that you wish to attend.

For the first aspect, I shall explore the Chinese notion of nature-"道法自然" "the way following nature" (Chapter 25, 道德经), its manifestations in aesthetics-溪山琴况 Xishan Qinkuang (1641)-with its 24 categories of aesthetic aspects, including interesting pairings of opposites, and how ideas from these texts might apply to recreations (打谱) through the performance of several pieces (山居吟,听泉吟,良宵引,etc.) in 大环阁琴谱 Dahuange Qinpu (1673). Xishan Qinkuang and Dahuange Qinpu are specifically chosen for a closer study as they share the same authorship of 徐上瀛 Xu Shangying, an important late Ming qin master of the Yushan School (虞山 派). Examples of acoustics properties of guqin in both silk and steel strings used nowadays, and various fingerings with considerations of possible rhythmic outcomes will be examined alongside descriptions of fingerings with gestural and kinaesthetic references to fauna and natural phenomena in 太古遗音 Taigu Yiyin (1511) as approaches to techniques, and the sonic-performance medium. Movement-sound-perceptive relations as often described in various literature will play an important role in this kind of workshop demonstration.

Learning from and continuing the heritage of his father, Rahul Dev Burman started to work with him as an assistant music director in the 1950s. When he started to work as a music director, Rahul experimented with new sounds and new thoughts in his compositions in order to satisfy changing tastes of the Indian community within India and abroad. Like Sachin Dev Burman’s compositions, Rahul’s compositions derive from various Indian folk tunes and Indian ragas. Rahul adapted and introduced exotic elements and music genres new to the Indian film music applying western orchestration. This paper is to investigate whether he used harmonic progressions on raga based film songs intentionally or rather accidentally. If he applied harmonic progressions with the purpose of enrichment, was it to increase the attractiveness of the song within his professional scope? These questions will be discussed using a detailed musical analysis of Churalia Hai Thumne, a Hindi film song composed by Rahul Dev Burman in 1973 and material collected through personal communication with Rahul Dev Burman’s close music assistants, musicians and music critics. In result, this study may help to understand how and why north Indian ragas are hybridized with Western harmonic progressions in Rahul Dev Burman’s compositions. Ethical issues related to Rahul Dev Burman’s approach to creativity are another important aspect within this study.

‘Buddhist music’, which has become a commonly used term only in the recent decades in the Sinophone, articulates an ambiguous but yet incongruously multi-faceted sphere of imagination for cultural musicologists with certain emphasis in musical shape and religious ideology. Despite the negotiation of the religious sound between secularism and sacredness within Buddhist society, the doctrine of ‘emptiness’ in the Buddhist philosophy that gives rise to the concept of phenomenality evokes a highly imaginative idea on the matter of ‘non-sounding’ music qualities and ‘non-musicality’ in the context of religious practice. Sociocultural anthropology contributes in some aspects to a holistic understanding of the non-sounding. Cultural, social, material and cognitive conditions within communities that are highly affected by religious considerations in daily life shape the environment in which the behaviour towards ‘sound’ and the ‘non-sounding’ is embedded. The anthropological view on this issues allows for further applications on specific religious societies as well as an individuation of elements in dealing with ‘emptiness’ that is musically imagined and as such understood by a group of people. Drawing on cultural musicology and anthropology, the music analysis in this interdisciplinary paper is limited to the present understanding of the Buddhist philosophy since the historical dimension can only be roughly touched. The examples chosen to demonstrate the musical imagination of ‘emptiness’ are taken from two small archives in Malaysia and Laos that were set up in order to support further music studies in an Asian multi-ethnic, multi-social and multi-religious context. ‘Buddhist music’ appears or should be deemed as ‘non-sounding’ is scrutinized as religious requirement, as an aesthetic preference, as an ideological state, and as a normative category that is widely individualised. For these cases, individual descriptions of clear imagination are considered as in the following examples: “lotuses in the sky flying to passengers on the missing Flight 370”; and “listening to the free reed pipe is as if being taken by high ocean waves while only occasionally diving under water and feeling temporarily deaf when the air flow is interrupted”. Other descriptions made in literature that is over thousand years old demand the absence of any distractive perception in sound in order to concentrate in the realm of subjectivity as a true living life. In contrast, other concepts consider ‘emptiness’ as non-productive and fill the communal space with sound in order to avoid the ‘non-sounding’ moment. In narrative and metaphorical analyses, some surprising sonic appearances become more understandable and can be better related to local differentiations in dealing with the perspective of ‘emptiness’, as well as the human imagination on a construct of the an imagined ‘emptiness’ in music. The final outcome is the presentation of an overview of concepts and philosophies on the musical imagination of ‘emptiness’, as ‘Buddhist music’ is deemed as a musical genre that requires an imaginative sphere that influences an audience’s understanding and his ways to consume the music. This overview is set into the present Asian space at the threshold to a speedy and large urban development transforming with globalisation and some local counter currents in various Asian cultures.

The Ideals of Nature in Guqin Performance Practice: The 7-Stringed Chinese Zither In this paper I... more The Ideals of Nature in Guqin Performance Practice: The 7-Stringed Chinese Zither In this paper I will examine the interactions between 3 aspects of guqin music: its aesthetics, techniques, and the sonic-performance medium, which is the performance practice. For the first aspect, I shall explore the Chinese notion of nature-"道法自然" "the way following nature" (Chapter 25, 道德经), its manifestations in aesthetics-溪山琴况 Xishan Qinkuang (1641)-with its 24 categories of aesthetic aspects, including interesting pairings of opposites, and how ideas from these texts might apply to recreations (打谱) through the performance of several pieces (山居吟,听泉吟,良宵引,etc.) in 大环阁 琴谱 Dahuange Qinpu (1673). Xishan Qinkuang and Dahuange Qinpu are specifically chosen for a closer study as they share the same authorship of 徐上瀛 Xu Shangying, an important late Ming qin master of the Yushan School (虞山派).
