De exemplu, pe cei care au acasă Triodul, dar se simt intimidaţi de proporţiile lui, sau pe cei care doresc să-şi nuanţeze viziunea despre Postul Mare, sau pe cei care, constrânşi de ritmul slujbei, nu reuşesc să zăbovească asupra textului
citit sau cântat, dar şi pe cei încă speriaţi de ideea de post, mai cu seamă … Mare.

Prezentul volum cuprinde primele 30 de Cuvinte din Partea I a scrierilor Sfântului Isaac Sirul. E... more Prezentul volum cuprinde primele 30 de Cuvinte din Partea I a scrierilor Sfântului Isaac Sirul. Este vorba de textul critic al vechii traduceri grecești realizate între secolele VIII-IX în Marea Lavră a Sfântului Sava, însoţit de o versiune românească nouă. Textul critic a fost editat în anul 2012 la mănăstirea athonită Iviron, iar la traducere a fost confruntat cu originalul siriac. Studiul introductiv prezintă, în partea istorică, viaţa şi scrierile Sfântului Isaac, precum şi arcanele prin care a trecut textul grec până la forma lui de astăzi; în partea teologică sunt prezentaţi pe larg principalii termeni filocalici utilizaţi de Sfântul Isaac. Textul românesc este însoţit de note ample şi numeroase care lămuresc pasajele obscure, făcând adeseori trimitere la originalul siriac. În acest fel Sfântul Isaac Sirul, cel mai cunoscut şi mai tradus autor filocalic, devine accesibil cititorului modern într-o traducere de secol XXI, secondată de explicaţii care fac textul transparent şi mijlocesc duhul spiritualităţii siro-orientale.

Capetele filocalice editate bilingv în acest volum provin de la nişte ucenici indirecţi şi îndepă... more Capetele filocalice editate bilingv în acest volum provin de la nişte ucenici indirecţi şi îndepărtaţi ai Avvei Evagrie, fiind redactate în Palestina secolului al V-lea. Aflate astăzi doar într-un manuscris grecesc atenian, descoperit în 1978, aceste Capete au fost intens folosite de Sfântul Maxim Mărturisitorul la redactarea faimoaselor sale Capete despre dragoste.
Traducerea, realizată acum pentru prima oară în româneşte, este însoţită de un amplu corpus de note şi comentarii, care lămuresc termeni şi idei din cuprinsul Capetelor şi evidenţiază legăturile textului cu marea tradiţie teologică şi filocalică răsăriteană, atestând felul în care gândirea şi scrierile pre-evagriene şi evagriene, de la care autorul nostru se revendică, au fost asimilate, reorganizate şi dezvoltate în cele mai diverse epoci şi contexte, până azi. Astfel structurată, cartea este şi o iniţiere în universul bogat şi peren al Filocaliei.

Tears represent signs of the state of the soul. Just as there are many stages of the spiritual li... more Tears represent signs of the state of the soul. Just as there are many
stages of the spiritual life and states experienced under the influence
of grace or of the passions, so there are many kinds of tears. The Syriac
Fathers do not speak systematically about spiritual weeping and tears.
However, what we attempt to do in this paper is to illustrate tears as
features of spiritual life of the monk, a major attention being given to
their provenance and role, based on the brief naratives we collect from
some compositions of Syriac mystics and Church Fathers.

The present study discusses the practical results of the theological polarisations within the Chu... more The present study discusses the practical results of the theological polarisations within the Church of the East, as described in the article of the previous issue, namely the tensions and conflicts that have arisen between the ecclesiastical institution and the monastic world. These can be summarised in two broad categories: between the hierarchy and the “perfected” and between spiritual theology and scholasticism. The roots of these tensions go back to the 4th century and have repeatedly provoked the reaction of the Church authorities. They reached their peak, however, in the condemnation, at the Council of Timothy I in 786/7, of three spiritual authors representative of the Syro-Oriental monastic tradition: John of Apamea, John Dalyatha and Joseph Hazzaya. The predominantly historical remarks of the present study will be followed by an analysis of the synodal anathematisms in a later paper.

This study traces the scholarly context in which one of the great patristic figures of Christian... more This study traces the scholarly context in which one of the great patristic
figures of Christian antiquity was formed: Evagrius Ponticus. Biographical data on this author are extremely scarce and, therefore, in reconstructing the picture of Evagrius’ intellectual formation, information from a wide variety of sources is used. In this way, the study succeeds in placing Evagrius in the general context of classical Greek paideia, showing how his many connections with pagan teachers of rhetoric and philosophy, as well as with the great theologians of the time, succeeded in imprinting on Evagrius’ thought the characteristic stamp of a classical education impregnated with the Christian ethos. It was with this education that Evagrius left, in the last part of his life, for the Egyptian desert, where he used all his intellectual endowment to create a system that has become a classic in Eastern monastic theology

stages of the spiritual life and states experienced under the influence
of grace or of the passions, so there are many kinds of tears. The Syriac
Fathers do not speak systematically about spiritual weeping and tears.
However, what we attempt to do in this paper is to illustrate tears as
features of spiritual life of the monk, a major attention being given to
their provenance and role, based on the brief naratives we collect from
some compositions of Syriac mystics and Church Fathers.

The present study discusses the practical results of the theological polarisations within the Chu... more The present study discusses the practical results of the theological polarisations within the Church of the East, as described in the article of the previous issue, namely the tensions and conflicts that have arisen between the ecclesiastical institution and the monastic world. These can be summarised in two broad categories: between the hierarchy and the “perfected” and between spiritual theology and scholasticism. The roots of these tensions go back to the 4th century and have repeatedly provoked the reaction of the Church authorities. They reached their peak, however, in the condemnation, at the Council of Timothy I in 786/7, of three spiritual authors representative of the Syro-Oriental monastic tradition: John of Apamea, John Dalyatha and Joseph Hazzaya. The predominantly historical remarks of the present study will be followed by an analysis of the synodal anathematisms in a later paper.

figures of Christian antiquity was formed: Evagrius Ponticus. Biographical data on this author are extremely scarce and, therefore, in reconstructing the picture of Evagrius’ intellectual formation, information from a wide variety of sources is used. In this way, the study succeeds in placing Evagrius in the general context of classical Greek paideia, showing how his many connections with pagan teachers of rhetoric and philosophy, as well as with the great theologians of the time, succeeded in imprinting on Evagrius’ thought the characteristic stamp of a classical education impregnated with the Christian ethos. It was with this education that Evagrius left, in the last part of his life, for the Egyptian desert, where he used all his intellectual endowment to create a system that has become a classic in Eastern monastic theology

In the present study is underlined the importance of mastering the original Syriac terminology of... more In the present study is underlined the importance of mastering the original Syriac terminology of a spiritual author such as the Syrian Isaac. To illustrate this practically, the attention of the authors focuses on a term that has not been studied in detail by researchers of Isaac’s writings until now.
The noun zaw‘e, stirrings’, is a key technical term in the language of the Syriac hermit. Based on the Syriac texts of Isaac, the paper shows that there are several types of stirrings. In terms of their origin and action, they are positives or negatives. Considered from an anthropological perspective, the stirrings may be classified into voluntary and involuntary. In the last part of the paper are presented various contexts in which the stirrings relate to various ascetical practices.

The present study deals with a theme of spirituality frequently found in the writings of St. Isaa... more The present study deals with a theme of spirituality frequently found in the writings of St. Isaac the Syrian, namely the idea of "way of life" (Syr.-dubara). Essential to understand the whole of his theology, this theme is treated in a manner little used until recently, but which is now becoming established in current academic research on Isaac, namely by appeal to his Syriac texts. This is achieved practically by pointing out the meanings of the Syriac term dubara and its Greek translation by politeia. The paper makes important clarifications of Isaac's terminology, and the novelty is that it highlights the connection between the text and the ascetical practices to which it refers. To this end, the study also presents the ideational synonyms of the Syriac term in question, as well as the various theological expressions in which it appears.

The Syriac term šapyuta (ܫܦܝܘܬܐ) is very often encountered in diverse ascetical texts and context... more The Syriac term šapyuta (ܫܦܝܘܬܐ) is very often encountered in diverse ascetical texts and contexts, being related to many aspects of Syriac spirituality. The present paper aims to research and to present the meanings that arise with various uses of it and to deepen the reader’s understanding of its semantic and theological content. Examining the texts of authors such as Ephrem, John the Solitary, Sahdona, Isaac of Nineveh, Dadišo Qatraya, Simon of Taybuteh, John of Dalyatha, Joseph Hazzaya and others, it becomes obvious that šapyuta is a key term for the Syriac monastic environment, a kind of knot where several plans of Syriac spiritual theology come together and connect with one another. As we analyze the connotations, and especially the contextual significations of the term šapyuta, this investigation is simultaneously an entry in the Syriac spirituality’s great themes: the primordial state of man and the fall, the stages of the spiritual life, the ascetical anthropology, the ascetical works etc.

towards the contemplation of the divine light. The path to this peak follows a certain route and has several stages. The author analyzes the Evagrian texts related to this topic contextually and terminologically, organizing them according to the stages of spiritual ascent. Thus, after affirming the biblical substrate of Evagrian theology, the author shows that even at the stage of the praktikē the ascetic is imparted with the divine light to a certain degree. The fundamental distinction between the created light of the mind and the uncreated divine light is highlighted, and the connections between ascetic anthropology and the light of the Holy Trinity and between contemplation and deification are emphasized. Finally, it is demonstrated that the experience of the light described by Evagrius has a profound Christological and ecclesiastical character, despite some interpretations that see Evagrius as an author under the sway of non-Christian influences. These teachings on the divine light have been retrieved, developed, and detailed throughout history by all the hesychast fathers who used Evagrius’ writings, a fact showing the importance of the topic for the whole Christian spirituality.
