Mobile objects have gained a lot of attention in research and industry in the recent past, but they also have a long history. Security is one of the key requirements of mobile objects, and one of the most researched characteristics related to mobility. Resource management has been somewhat neglected in the past, but it is being increasingly addressed, in both the context of security and QoS. In this paper we place a few systems supporting mobile objects in perspective based upon how they address security and resource management. We start with the theoretical model of Actors that supports concurrent mobile objects in a programming environment. Then we describe task migration for the Mach microkernel, a case of mobile objects supported by an operating system. With the increasing interest in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) it is likely that they will be massively deployed in future control systems. Their use raises many new challenges: generic ones and more specific ones depending on the field of application. Considering control systems made of calculators and passive components (actuators and sensors), we have started investigating dependable communication allowing to integrate MEMS on a large-scale (or MEMS network), as for example thousands of micro-actuators acting as a substitute for a current actuator. These changes require to define, to evaluate and to validate new communication systems in terms of architectures and protocols, and consequently their dependability so that the future control systems will be as much dependable as the current ones. Wireless sensor networks have been used to gather data and information in many diverse application settings. The capacity of such networks remains a fundamental obstacle toward the adaptation of sensor network systems for advanced pplications
that require higher data rates and throughput. In this paper, we explore potential benefits of integrating directional antennas into wireless sensor networks. While the usage of directional antennas has been investigated in the past for ad hoc networks, their usage in sensor networks bring both opportunities as well as challenges. In this paper, Sectored-Antenna Medium Access Control (SAMAC), an integrated cross-layer protocol that provides the communication mechanisms for sensor network to fully utilize sectored antennas, is introduced. Simulation studies show that SAMAC delivers high energy efficiency and predictable delay performance with graceful degradation in performance with increased load.

The cost of the test activity constitutes an important part of the total development cost. To make test easier (cost, time, and efforts), the consideration of test problems before the implementation phase is now necessary. This early consideration is known as Design for testability (DFT). The design of testable software does not consist solely in applying methods that improve the testability but also to verify if the degree of testability of the new obtained product is acceptable. This activity can be carried out using testability evaluation and a set of appropriate transformations. We propose a method based on the modeling of software by relations. The testability of a given specification is defined as a set of factors that influence the tests. These factors are evaluated separately and their values are gathered in a vector called the testability vector.
