A Best Academic Paper at the Integral European Conference, this paper presents an integrally‐informed, Wilber‐influenced approach to expanding the study of occupant behaviour beyond building science. Poorly understood occupants are a main reason why predicted and actual building energy performance deviate significantly. Existing research focuses on a useful but limited objective science and engineering approach. This research project develops an integral methodology for transdisciplinary inquiry of occupants' experience and action in architectural space, with regard to their experience of nature and natural forces. Each of four major perspectives has two research questions; each question, a method from architectural design, building science, cultural theory, place phenomenology or social psychology. Our hypothesis is that spatial‐temporal patterns can serve as an integrating frame among diverse perspectives. We conclude with proposing conceptual frames for future research into architectural inhabitation from sixteen prospects generated from four levels of complexity in each of four primary perspectives.

Editor's note: The Autism Research Institute has been actively involved in sensory-related research for the past 30 years. An important question is: How can we translate our understanding of sensory challenges to improving the quality of life for those on the autism spectrum? For the past decade, Steven J. Orfield, a colleague of Dr. Stephen M. Edelson and founder of Orfield Laboratories, has focused his efforts on designing sensory-optimal residential, school, and work spaces for those with autism as well as other populations. Professionals who design building structures typically do not take into account the perceptual and/or cognitive challenges experienced by individuals with various disabilities. Sometimes these challenges are referred to as the " invisible disabilities " within the inclusiveness community. Moreover, when designers are asked to consider the users' perceptual and/or cognitive disabilities, they often rely on intuition rather than on an agreed-upon, science-based approach. Consequently, the need for objective standards is paramount, given the increasing number of residential facilities, therapeutic clinics, and employment settings currently being designed for those with autism and other disabilities.

"This study gathers and interprets the earliest extant references to architects in ancient Greek philosophy, as found in select works of Plato and Aristotle. Throughout this review, Plato and Aristotle [are] shown to consistently present architectonic agents as exemplary civic and intellectual leaders, acting in awareness of their own (and others’) limits, with knowledge of the most appropriate archē, and with a view to the most comprehensive aims—the common good. This discloses an alternative and more accurate etymology of architects: not as master-builders but as leaders and makers of beginnings (archai). The aim of this essay has been not only to rediscover the discursive beginnings for a renewed philosophy of architecture, but to suggest how these philosophical 'archai' might help present-day architects reimagine the full relevance of their still contested role."

Research, once associated only with academia, now equally connects to learning and practice in architecture, as focus has shifted towards a wider design research community. Research has become inclusive of formerly marginalised areas such as process-oriented and practice-based research in the arts and humanities as well as applied commercial research undertaken by industry. Providing a first study of this shift, this paper explores why design research is of growing importance to architecture. It systematically analyses a selection of current cases at the intersection of architectural practice and education within the UK to survey existing design research approaches, and asks: How can design research transform and create new architectural practices and forms of education? Following this question, the paper discusses some of the design research models used across architectural practice and education.

This research is based on the basic concept of "Five Elements" and the theory of mutual promotion and restraint between "five elements". The major well-known enterprises have shift much more attention to the huge potential Chinese market. The "five elements" as the Chinese People's traditional material concept has a huge impact on people's aesthetic inclination and life style. Especially for high-income people, mutual promotion and restraint of "Five Elements" concept should influence their choice of daily necessities, especially the choice of luxury. The impact of "Five Elements" concept analyses on Chinese art and design since ancient times was the main methodology in the article. Furthermore, this research fruit was also used in creation of transportation design, in order to create economic benefits.

We live in increasingly unpredictable and turbulent times. The physical form of cities is radically changing. Societies confront unprecedented and accelerating trends in urbanization, political instability, climate change and technological transformation. While we can identify aspects of existing structures that have enhanced aptitude to adapt, it is not guaranteed that mutable features will function effectively in the future. Predicting social, technological or climate change proves impossible. Designing for future cities cannot be about foreseeing tomorrow, rather it must be about creating capacity now given uncertainty later. The present research pursues strategies that are both responsive and holistic-integrating aspects of durability, flexibility and responsibility while introducing social, environmental and economic factors via a framework for dynamic design. Agile architecture demands a frame driven by an attitude that connects lessons from the past, necessities of the present and indeterminacies of the future. The research first critically assesses the status quo, then pursues concepts of greater agility in contemporary building design-using case study and survey methods to illuminate best practices and identify potential. The work synthesizes an approach for Agility + sustainability that is relevant worldwide. The authors delineate a theoretical foundation needed to inform and inspire the frame. Seminal cases of Agile residential projects are strategically drawn from geographic regions with the highest current and projected floor area in the 21 st century, aiming to illustrate progressive concepts within design, construction, legislative and/or financial ethos. Key deficiencies in the marketplace are illuminated as well as contextual barriers against formulating/implementing such an innovative approach. Advancing Gordon's 3L principle, Open Building (OB) and Sinclair's Holistic Framework for Design + Planning, the forthcoming integrative model aims at realizing potent Agile solutions-in essence migrating away from static modern architecture. When buildings are designed to readily cope with change, our cities can approach meaningful sustainability.

Architecture is a mixing of art and building design techniques. There are so many type of architecture, one of them is neo futuristic architecture . Neo futuristic architecture is an impression that the building is oriented toward the future or the building always follows the development of the era shown through the expression of the building. There are so many architects that using neo futuristic architecture as their special features, one of them is Eero Saarinen.
The purpose of this research is to know what become Eero Saarinen’s neo futuristic architeture design principle especially in comercial buildings. There are three type of method that used to research is the literature method, method of analysis and method of determining the sample.
Based on analysis, there are 3 characteristics of neo futuristic that become Eero Saarinen’s design principle. 1. It has a universal style as a needs, 2. The simplicity of form is the main point, 3. The real exposed of materials

Post-Anthropocentric Creativity; Call for Submissions, special issue of Digital Creativity, 27:1, January 2016; Guest editors: Stanislav Roudavski and Jon McCormack. This special issue aims to audit existing conceptions of creativity in the light of non-anthropocentric interpretations of agency, autonomy, subjectivity, social practices and technologies. Specifically, it seeks to explore how 1) the agents, recipients and processes of creativity and 2) the purpose, value, ethics and politics of creativity relate to phenomena of computation. The editors encourage innovative narrative or visual strategies that can express relevant scenarios better that more typical forms of academic writing. Dialogues, conversations, plays, scripts, instruction sets, games or visual essays (for example) might be suitable alongside logical arguments or formulae.

By paraphrasing Oliver Sack’s famous book title, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales, I wish to strike a note of ambivalence for this reflection on my ongoing doctoral project. I will present and try to disentangle some of the issues that have affected the work, and hopefully contribute to the discussion on doctoral education in architecture, particularly practice-oriented programs.

Research through design is part of design practice. Both in architecture and urban development, professionals explore new areas and domains. They examine opportunities, explore possibillities and design new practices to counter current issues and problems and to meet future challenges. This working paper establishes the role of research within the practice of architecture and urban developments. Its authors argue that, because of its perspective on the future and its orientation towards practice, research through design is extremely valuable to meet current grand social challenges, specifically in the current age of uncertainty. In this context, academic research is of limited use as a basis for intervention to produce change, because the knowledge it produces is mainly rooted in examinations of past events and behaviour. The paper examines several cases of research through design withing architecture and urban development in the Netherlands.

Digital tectonic design is a fresh approach to architectural design methodology. Tectonics means a focus on assemblies of construction elements. Digital tectonics is an evolving methodology that integrates use of design software with traditional construction methods. We see digital tectonic design as a systematic use of geometric and spatial ordinances, used in combination with details and components directly related to contemporary construction.

This paper investigates an approach to the use of fractals in architectural design. Two major aspects are discussed. First, the effect of the direction of the line segments on the generated fractal, as well as, the proportions between the generator and the initiator. Secondly, the meanings attached to the lines segments that constitute the fractal are based on some known architectural organization. The goal is to develop a basis for using fractals to suggest architectural forms.

Discourses on epistemology in a variety of disciplines have established the need for diverse and case-specific approaches to writing. This need is as actual in practice-based research and the relevant fields would benefit from better support of creative experimentation with academic expression. In order to demonstrate that advances in this area are necessary, this article examines advice and criteria for writing offered by a typical writing guide. The discussed examples demonstrate that while the recommendations of such guides are useful, their emphasis on standardisation is also limiting. The article contrasts the advice common to writing guides and other prescriptive documents with the current state-of-the-art practice in qualitative research, pointing out productive alternative approaches.

The building of the Cistercian abbey of Tarouca was initiated in 1152 and the church was consecrated in 1169. In 1834 the monastery was secularised.
The inside quietude and the formal and semantic expression of the church corresponds to the monastic mentality of the first local Cistercians.
The investigations and the profuse recording of measures carried out in the church enable us to identify the use of an orthogonal modular structure as methodological principle for its architectural composition. The unit of linear measure adopted was the old king's foot (“pied du roi”). The fundamental module is 8 king's feet sideways.
As we can verify, the plan of the Tarouca temple yields to the usual proportionateness of the Cistercian churches following the Bernardin model.

XJTLU's Design Research Institute (DRI) is a new transdisciplinary initiative aimed at fostering design research as a speculative and rigorous projectbased form of enquiry that offers the sciences, the arts, the humanities, engineering and society at large valuable insights into processes that lead to desirable futures. Within China and internationally, the DRI sets out to establish itself as a centre of design research excellence, with emphases on advanced practices in developing contexts and on the dynamics of creative processes. It is one of a small number of high priority, thematically focused, research institutes at XJTLU, in recognition of design as a transdisciplinary area of strategic importance. The DRI welcomes people, ideas and initiatives related to design research from XJTLU faculty and students, as well as from academia and industry at large. The Shared Territories exhibition is the Design Research Institute's inaugural event. Its contributions were solicited internationally by invitation, and by an open call across the XJTLU campus. The result is a broad variety of design research areas, methods and media, of local, regional and international projects, from academic and industrial contributors. We envision this variety to stimulate design research interest and discourse across our campus and beyond in the intellectual territories shared between all who rigorously engage in open-ended, creative enquiry.

If we use the metaphor of the body for an approach to buildings, in their many and various forms, it is clear that for the greater part of history we have been dealing with entities that have a skeleton and a system of muscles and sinews, and which use some form of plumage for display, but which have lacked for anything that might be called a nervous system. Even now with most homes in the western world fully electrified, connected to a telephone network by wire and a communications network via broadcast terrestrial and satellite providers, the nervous system of the house is almost entirely undeveloped. This paper explores these issues.
