The recent advancements in the field of embedded systems enables us to develop a reliable smart home system for easier access to home appliances. The aim is to provide a seamless integration of various methods of controlling appliances in the smart home aiding the physically challenged. This can be done by means of a non-invasive Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), text messaging and a personalized web page. This paper proposes a novel method wherein the physically challenged people can control the appliances by using Emotiv EPOC headset which reads the Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals recorded from the brain activity and communicates with an Arduino board. The proposed system has been built with the help of an Ethernet shield which runs a webserver, and a GSM shield which communicates with the Arduino through text messaging (SMS).

IPv4 address space will run out in the next two years. Therefore, it is necessary to deploy the new version of the Internet Protocol (IPv6) which dramatically expands the address space. One important issue for IPv6 to gain acceptance, is its end-to-end performance. For this reason, it is important to offer the Internet community some tools to compare IPv4 and IPv6 performance. In this paper, we present some models to evaluate the performance of IPv4 and IPv6. Our models can be used for any variant of Ethernet technologies (10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 1000 Mbps). We start by presenting a model for the one-way delay in IPv4 and IPv6. We also develop an upper bound model for IPv4 and IPv6 throughput. To validate our models, we do some experiments and compare the experimental values with the values given by the models. From this research, we can conclude that IPv4 has a better performance than IPv6 (higher throughput), but the differences are small.

The performance evaluation of any technology is based on certain parameters such as throughput and delay among others, experienced from one user to the others. The behavior of this technology can be affected by the number of users or nodes and certain generation parameters. This design work is aim to evaluate and investigate the behavior of throughput and delay on two different technologies: Ethernet and FDDI. Using two scenarios with 20 nodes each and design with OPNET-MODELER simulator, the two technologies operate at a speed of 100Mbps. The two scenarios created were analyzed using the result generated from the graph. It was concluded that throughput in Ethernet is greater than that of FDDI and delay experienced by the Ethernet network is more than that of FDDI when the same number of nodes were used. Protection and automation in a smart grid environment often have stringent real-time communication requirements between devices within a substation, as well as between distantly located substations. The Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) protocol has been proposed to achieve this goal as it allows to transfer time-critical information within a few milliseconds. However, the transmission of GOOSE messages is often limited to a small Local Area Network (LAN). An earlier work has proposed to use the fifth generation of mobile networks (5G) as a means to transport GOOSE messages in a large-scale smart grid environment. On the basis of this work, this paper designs and implements a new solution for Ethernet-based GOOSE communication over a virtualized 5G core network that does not require any modification of the existing network protocol stack and thus is much easier to deploy. Our experimental results show that the delay introduced by the core network is in the order of sub milliseconds, while the one-way delay without a real radio access network, and without background traffic, is less than 1 ms. Moreover, these delays can be significantly reduced with a container-based deployment rather than a virtual machine-based one. Assuming a 1-ms delay budget for a 5G radio access network, our evaluation confirms that it is indeed feasible to use 5G for GOOSE transmission in IEC 61850 substation automation systems.

Communication within substatation automation systems in a smart grid environment is often time-critical. The time required for exchanging information between intelligent devices should be within a few milliseconds. The International Elec-trotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850 standard has proposed the Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) protocol to achieve this goal. However, the transmission of GOOSE messages is often limited to a small Local Area Network (LAN). In this demo, we demonstrate the feasibility of using 5G for GOOSE-based time critical communication in a large-scale smart-grid environment, and present a deployable 5G core solution using container-based virtualization technology. The radio part of the demo is emulated. The demo also shows that the delay introduced by the core network is in the order of sub milliseconds, while the one-way delay without a real radio access network is less than 1 ms, which is well below the total delay budget for GOOSE.

With recent developments in SCADA systems, Raspberry pi and TCP protocols, there is great potential for the conversion of Ethernet Serial Protocol for SCADA systems using Raspberry Pi. The converter intermediately acts as the SCADA server and communicate with the remote terminal units and buffer all the data locally available, so that, the data requested by the SCADA is delivered immediately. In this approach, the Raspberry Pi acts as an interpreter, where the messages exchanged between the SCADA and the RTU are only converted from one protocol to another. The approach with the highest update rate, from the SCADA's point of view, is going to be selected for the propose method. Raspberry Pi is a small single-board computer that has a variety of interfaces to connect it to the environment it is working it. Ethernet and SPI interfaces present in this device, and has been used to implement different applications using different communication mediums. In this study, the Raspberry Pi is going to be used to implement a protocol converter that allows older SCADA system to communicate with the RTUs, without the installation of expensive hardware and software expansions. Using SCADA systems, unauthorized access to valves and switches could be more tightly controlled while keeping a human in the loop; that is, human supervision and interaction were, and still are, part of SCADA systems. However, technological advances and the maturation of Raspberry Pi has pushed more of the supervisory function onto the computer systems that make up modern SCADA systems.

The technological development in Wireless Sensor Networks made it possible to use in monitoring and control of greenhouse parameter in precision agriculture. In last decades there have been tremendous advancements in technology for agriculture and growth of final yield. Due to uneven natural distribution of rain water it is very crucial for farmers to monitor and control the equal distribution of water to all crops in the whole farm or as per the requirement of the crop. There is no ideal irrigation method available which may be suitable for all weather conditions, soil structure and variety of crops cultures. Green house technology may be the best solution for this solution. All the parameters of greenhouse require a detailed analysis in order to choose the correct method. It is observed that farmers have to bear huge financial loss because of wrong prediction of weather and incorrect irrigation method to crops. In this contest with the evolution in wireless sensor technologies and miniaturized sensor devices, it is possible to uses them for automatic environment monitoring and controlling the parameters of greenhouse, for Precision Agriculture (PA) application. In this paper, we have proposed and analyse the use of Programmable System on Chip Technology (PSoC) as a part of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) to monitor and control various parameter of green house.

The paper deals with a methodology of switching latency measurement in switched Ethernet networks. The switching latency is parameter necessary for simulation and design of low-latency networks that are often intended for real-time control inherent to many industrial applications. The proposed measurement methodology provides a simple way of switching the latency determination and vendor quoted latency values verification directly at the physical layer. Numerous experimental measurements were carried out to support the arguments in this paper and to demonstrate the usability of the proposed methodology. All results are presented and analysed up to 10GBase-R Ethernet including OpenFlow switches.

IPv4 addresses have been depleted in February 2011, when the IANA allocated the remaining last five /8s IPv4 address blocks to the RIRs. IPv6 has been developed by the IETF as a solution to the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses. In this paper, we present some models to evaluate the performance of IPv4 and IPv6 in Ethernet networks, the most widely-installed local area network technology. Our models can be used for any variant of Ethernet technologies (10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 1000 Mbps). We introduce a lower-bound model for the one-way delay and an upper-bound model for the throughput, in both IPv4 and IPv6. We validate our models with experiments and simulations. From our research, we can conclude that IPv4 has a better performance than IPv6, but the differences are small and should not delay the migration from IPv4 to IPv6.

This Paper is to enable the Siemens (Programmable Logic Control) CPU 313-5A to communicate with the Lab VIEW and to control the process accuracy by image processing. The communication between CPU 313-5A and Lab VIEW is via OPC (OLE for Process Control). Process Accuracy is achieved with the use of Labview Image Processing and Gray Scale matching Pattern. Accuracy in the gray scale matching will purely depend on the calibration of the camera with respect to the corresponding image. The digital output from the labview is communicated to PLC via Ethernet Protocol for the industrial process control. With the use of Labview the dead time while using the normal image vision module in PLC can be minimized. Labview uses the gray scale matching technique which is more accurate than the normal image vision module used in PLC.
