Shouldn't the future be a place where our graphical interfaces disencumber computer use? We should be developing a library of graphical presentation and interface techniques relative to where they are useful. We should work to make things respect the ergonomic and psychophysical realities of people. We should work to make things that look like what they do or represent. When these goals over constrain design, we need good teaching tools - prosthetics - to help the user share the designer's vision. When should the user interface should slink out of the way to allow us to focus our attention on our tasks and when should it be stylish and playful? The sea-green institutional paint of the 50s was supposed be a relaxing color. Interfaces also might suffer from being offensively bland. We choose and use things to make a social statement of status, style, and knowledge. This paper discusses how tools should give designers the latitude to create brand and style statements, while mak...

Abstract—The paper tackles the problem of designing intuitive graphical interfaces for selecting navigational targets for an autonomous robot. Our work focuses on the design and validation of such a flexible interface for an intelligent wheelchair navigating in a large indoor environment. We begin by describing the robot platform and interface design. We then present results from a user study in which participants were required to select navigational targets using a variety of input and filtering methods. We considered two types of input modalities (point-and-click and single-switch), to investigate the effect of constraints on the input mode. We take a particular look at the use of filtering methods to reduce the amount of information presented onscreen and thereby accelerate selection of the correct option. I.

Statistical process control (SPC) is widely used in process industries to monitor variations in process attributes. Typically, automatic devices capture a multitude of measurements on process and product characteristics every few seconds. Operators and engineers commonly monitor only a small subset of these. Multivariate SPC has been proposed to fully utilize the available data, however, interpretation of multivariate information is often too complex for most line operators. This paper describes the design and implementation of a real-time multivariate process control system that features a graphical user interface (GUI) and provides useful information for both line operators and engineers. The information system described in this paper should provide large-scale manufacturers with better access to information for identifying opportunities in continuing to improve processes performance and business competitiveness.

Industrial productive systems can combine different automation characteristics processes in manufacturing cells. Machines and equipment are controlled by different info systems that allow to link up, making possible the flexibility and help to optimise manufacturing processes in factories. In the manufacturing processes, the difficulties found in conventional machining processes or even in numerical command machining when there are available machines adjusted for parts manufacture of complex geometries, can limit the creativity as well as make difficult the development of a productive process in a optimized way. The difficulties are since setting out parts, working in the necessities of special devices, restrictions in work volumes and even to generate complex paths for machines with axis limitation. This work points out an alternative methodology for machining, especially milling, through the development of a capable algorithm to translate graphical files in a programming language ...

The present paper gives the detailed analysis of the relationship between Voltage and Capacitance. This conversion from capacitance to voltage is required for the interfacing of electronic microcontrollers. Detection of various dielectrics can be done by using an accurate low capacitance measurement system that can be used to measure small values of capacitances. This capacitance measurement system uses quad two-input NAND Schmitt trigger circuit for the measurement and this system is integrated with Arduino for data acquisition purpose. The Arduino interacts with software developed in the PC end through USB architecture and an attractive Graphical User Interface (GUI) based system is developed in the PC end to provide the user with real time, online display of capacitance under measurement.

In this paper some possible solutions of graphi-cal user interfaces (GUIs) within Python programming language are presented. GUIs are becoming increasingly important, because human beings are more and more involved in dealing with computers for every day life. GUIs are however part of computer systems that presents the border between computer and human being. It is therefore very important for any serious programming language to offer easy to use solutions in the area of GUI development. In this paper a few possible GUI libraries for Python are presented. A very basic examples of their application are also given in order to give a sense of their complexity. Two examples which can be useful in educational environment are also presented at the end of the paper.

The present paper describes the analysis of an accurate Inductive Proximity Sensor that is interfaced to the Arduino and is used to detect metal. A graph of Distance v/s Current is plotted for different metallic materials. The Detection of various metallic materials can be done by using an accurate Inductive Proximity Sensor like the M18DPO. The Arduino interacts with software developed in the PC end through USB architecture and an attractive Graphical User Interface (GUI) based system is developed in the PC end to provide the user with real time, online display of the Inductive Sensor Output.

This thesis is about the legal protection of the Intellectual Property (IP) of the design of the graphical user interface (GUI) for computer programs aka software. The research into this matter of law was done by finding out and analysing how this protection is provided through international treaties, statutory law and case law. It concludes that there is a certain amount of legal uncertainty within the area researched and that full harmonization of IPRs within EU most probably would remove this issue and thereby benefit the individual author. This thesis takes the reader on a journey where we will explore the dimension where law and technology meet and merge.

Generally parallelized person cannot communicate with the normal person so we are developing a glove, in which the parallelized person can give the sign through wearable glove which helps to communicate with normal persons. The main objectives of this project is to detect the position of fingers and give command to the doctor. It consists of a glove in which flex sensor are attached to an electronic conditioning circuit. The glove can have several other applications such as:(1) The recognition of sign language, (2) The diagnostic measured of the finger movement at a distance and (3) The interaction with virtual reality. This paper focuses on studying and implementing a system for measuring the finger position of one hand. It can be used in rehabilitation purpose and here we focus on biomedical application which exhibit coordination between parallelized patient and doctor. So this is a simple and moderate system.

The mobile phones are becoming now an irreplaceable utility of every household. It serves as wall clock, alarm clock, calculator, calendar, timer and many more, but have this multi-functionality overloaded the interface of the new generation of the mobile phones. The youth have adapted well to these multiple functionalities graphical user interface, but the interface has now haunting effects for usage by the two age groups i.e. elderly and kids. The interface may end up leading the new generation mobiles in the market useless or of very little use to the elderly and kids. This leads towards the need of age based user interface in the mobile operating system which will consist of interface selection home screen which further directs to age oriented interfaces.

Abstract This article explores the aesthetic design criteria that should be incorporated into the information visualization of a taxonomy intended for use by children. Seven elementary-school students were each asked to represent their ideas in drawings for visualizing a taxonomy. Their drawings were analyzed according to six criteria—balance, equilibrium, symmetry, unity, rhythm, and economy—identified as aesthetic measures in previous research. The drawings revealed the presence of all six measures, and three—unity, ...

In this paper we briefly describe a Mathematica program for simulation of quantum circuits and illustrate some of its facilities by simple examples. Unlike other Mathematica-based quantum simulators, our program provides a user-friendly graphical interface for generating quantum circuits and computing the circuit unitary matrices. In addition to standard linear algebra-based tools, our program implements special computer-algebra technique for constructing the multivariate polynomial system that, for a circuit composed from the Toffoli and Hadamard gates, uniquely defines the circuit matrix.

In 1748, Giovanni Battista Nolli (1692-1756) published his «New Map of Rome» (Nuova Pianta di Roma). This work represents the first geometrically correct representation of Rome within the city walls, and the only map deriving from a topographical survey of which the procedures are known. The map represents a precious source of information and a valid cartographic basis for the study of the successive phases of the city development.
