The solar flare activity is associated with the sunspots activity. The solar flare index data (monthly flare index cycles "20, 21, 22, 23", available on world data center) is used starting from 1966 to 2008 in this research work. The main purpose of this research is to compare the solar flares activity data of north hemisphere, south hemisphere and total hemisphere with K-index activity data using fractal dimension. Persistency (1 < D < 1.5) is observed for each solar cycle of each hemisphere along with the total hemisphere and compare with the associated K-index activity data. Persistency analysis of solar flares activity and K-index activity data will be useful to understand the effects of solar flares dynamics on the K-index dynamics. There is strong bond found between solar flares north hemisphere and K-index data. Hurst exponent is also obtained with the help of fractal dimension (H = 2- D) to understand the long rang dependence (self-similarity) of solar flares...

The importance of the second law of thermodynamics, already called the most metaphysical of all laws of nature, as key to understand the questions of ecology and sustainability is discussed, as well as the a fast paced conceptual evolution that gained momentum in the last 50 years , changing our view of Nature. Classical thermodynamics, is associated with the tendency to disorganization, while nonlinear irreversible thermodynamics, introduces the concept of emerging ordered dissipative structures, a necessa ry tool to deal with the nature of living beings and its social, economic and ecological aggregates. Most introductory texts in thermodynamics are limited in scope , restricting the expositions to the study of equilibrium systems- meaning the study of idealized, infinitely slow process, hardly a situation encountered by the professional life, and far away from how nature works, as an coherent and complex aggregate of dissipative processes. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia occurring in 1-2% of general population, and approximately 13% of AF patients suffer from diabetes. Cardiovascular autonomic control impairment is associated with total mortality, but current practical use of ECG-based risk predictors is limited in permanent AF (PAF) patients due to absolute irregularity of ventricular contractions. We assume that it is possible to use measurements of circadian heart rate (HR) changes for mortality risk and cardiac autonomic control assessment in PAF patients. In 327 symptomatic PAF patients (259 non-diabetic, 68 diabetic), exposed to Holter monitoring in 2007-2010, circadian HR variability and standard Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Time domain indices were calculated and compared in patients who died or survived, and non-diabetic and diabetic patients. Patients were followed for a median period of 39 months (1-60). It was found that circadian HR indices were significantly lower...

Noise produced by components in a diesel affect the quality of the engine noise. One component source related to consumer complaints is gear rattle. Gear rattle is caused by gear tooth impacts resulting from fluctuations in differential torsional acceleration of the driving gears. Previous work in this area has focused on rating the overall sound quality of diesel engines without specifically focusing on models for predicting the perception of gear rattle. Here, a method to generate sounds having different levels of gear rattle is described. First, diesel engine noise recordings were analyzed to determine the engine speed time histories; they were then used to guide gear impact timing and to generate gear noise components. The gear noise transfer paths were then tuned to improve the quality of the gear noise predictions. The gear noise simulation tool is presently being used to generate sounds for subjective tests designed to quantify the detectability, perception of growth, and ann...

For the purpose of minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing strongly to the climate change mitigation, many researchers and scientists are making tremendous efforts in order to boost the research and development in renewable energies as an important solution to reduce the use of conventional power generation resources. Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is widely used and has known a significant interest in last years. However, its dependence on the atmospheric conditions does not allow researchers to perform their experiences at the desired atmospheric parameters especially temperature (T) and irradiance (G). Furthermore, using real PV modules with controllable light source to carry out measurements and tests on PV applications such as Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and solar connected inverters is considerably inefficient and less flexible. Therefore, PV array emulator were appeared to deal with those limitations and to replace efficiently the use of real PV modules i...

This document is the result of multiple investigations carried out by the authors, which have been published or are in the process of being published, where the starting point is a structural system in earthquake resistant steel that is lighter in weight: Special Concentrically Brace Frames SCBF, since in other investigations the authors have compared different steel structural systems and has come to the conclusion that SCBF is the lightest, however it maintains seismic resistant characteristics and is even more rigid than other systems without braces such as Special Moment Frames SMF, additionally it is placed in places where it is not necessary that the frames are braced using ordinary OMF moment frames. Eighteen structural archetypes have been designed, varying the distance between column axes, number of floors, but preserving their geometry and architecture. Of which 9 archetypes are made of SCBF structural steel and 9 of SMF type reinforced concrete. Both materials present acceptable and similar seismic-resistant conditions, so based on these designs, the cost and the amount of CO2 emitted are analyzed, considering the superstructure from level 0+00 and the substructure or foundations. The result is which structure is more environmentally friendly and alternatives of use according to area, number of floors and distances between axes looking for an economic optimization.

Applications of measure theory and Lebesgue integration In this context we will see how useful the concept of measure theory and Lebesgue integration is? When it comes to application these concepts have a really high scope. This field is really useful in mathematics as well as in statistics, economics and in real life. Measure Theory Definition Let X be a set and a over X. A function to the extended real number line is called a measure if it satisfies the following properties: Non negativity: For all E in Σ, we have μ(E) ≥ 0. Null empty set: Countable additivity: For all countable collections of pairwise disjoint set in ,

A number of constitutive theories have arisen describing materials which, by nature, exhibit a non-local response. The formulation of boundary value problems, in this case, leads to a system of equations involving higher-order derivatives which, in turn, results in requirements of continuity of the solution of higher order. Discontinuous Galerkin methods are particularly attractive toward this end, as they provide a means to naturally enforce higher interelement continuity in a weak manner without the need of modifying the finite element interpolation. In this work, a discontinuous Galerkin formulation for boundary value problems in small strain, non-local linear elasticity is proposed. The underlying theory corresponds to the phenomenological strain-gradient theory developed by Fleck and Hutchinson within the Toupin-Mindlin framework. The single-field displacement method obtained enables the discretization of the boundary value problem with a conventional continuous interpolation i...

We study patterns of partial synchronization in a network of FitzHugh–Nagumo oscillators with empirical structural connectivity measured in human subjects. We report the spontaneous occurrence of synchronization phenomena that closely resemble the ones seen during epileptic seizures in humans. In order to obtain deeper insights into the interplay between dynamics and network topology, we perform long-term simulations of oscillatory dynamics on different paradigmatic network structures: random networks, regular nonlocally coupled ring networks, ring networks with fractal connectivities, and small-world networks with various rewiring probability. Among these networks, a small-world network with intermediate rewiring probability best mimics the findings achieved with the simulations using the empirical structural connectivity. For the other network topologies, either no spontaneously occurring epileptic-seizure-related synchronization phenomena can be observed in the simulated dynamics...
