My chapter on Leary builds on the foundational chapters established by my dissertation, which traces the initial development of artificially-induced states of epiphanic consciousness from Humphry Davy’s nitrous oxide laboratory in 1799 to the psychedelic experiments of Aldous Huxley in the early twentieth century. My new project—which forms the second half of my book manuscript—opens with Huxley, who represents the inflection point between the first and second eras of psychedelic science. Drawing on Romanticism, Huxley reframes the major themes of religious mysticism and the “perennial philosophy” in terms of the secular science laboratory and synthetic chemistry. I will show that this psychedelicization of the perennial tradition influenced the research protocols of later psychedelic chemical scientists from Timothy Leary, John Lilly, Sasha Shulgin, and Terence McKenna in the twentieth century to present-day researchers. In sum, I argue that this progressive discourse has promoted a “secular mysticism” reconciling transcendent experiences with empirical science.

There is an increasing number in dropouts from high school students from the educational institutions in Puerto Rico. Educational reports by (Swanson, 2008) and (Bridgeland et al., 2006) have revealed a certain correlation between dropouts and lack of engagement in the classroom. In addition, a report by (The department of education, 2012) has revealed that less than half of the students score within basic level performance in standardized testing. These findings contribute towards the possibility that if the issue of class engagement was resolved, it would help close the gap of high school dropout which in turn calls for a critical evaluation of the current pedagogy used in Puerto Rico along with the creation of a multi-modality classroom. Studies by (Kress, 2003) and (Frey & Fisher, 2008) agree that visual media is an essential tool in order to lead multi-modality classroom and which supports student’s engagement in class and benefits their internalization of information.
The purpose of this research is to perform a qualitative case study in a classroom setting where using a teaching unit which makes use of Anime as a visual form of text triggers students into reading and interpreting this “visual text” in order to gain insights about different thematics and issues which affect their person, community, and/or culture among other factors. The main problem which the researcher wishes to address is the lack of engagement in the classroom which results from older teaching strategies which rely on canonical texts and standardized testing which does not encompass for all the different kinds of mindsets which a teacher can encounter in the modern classroom. Using data collection methods of non-participant observation, interviews with the teacher and collecting artifacts from student’s work throughout the semester, the researcher can address if the use of visual media in the classroom does help with engagement in the classroom and students develop complexity in their interpretations of the thematics and issues discussed in class. This study may reveal important details about the use of visual media in the classroom setting. Lastly, it might reveal whether current pedagogy which does not make use of visual media gauges class engagement effectively.

This study examines the employment issues in the fields of information technology and communications (ICT). In April 2013, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics issued the annual report for labor markets; there was a shocking percent (41.8%) of unemployment between the graduates of ICT departments in Gaza Strip. The purpose of this study is to determine the gaps between the market needs and the quality of graduates. In the recent years, there was a rising trend toward freelancing (Revell et al., 2009), the concepts of freelancing still not well formulated for the graduates in Gaza Strip (El-Alami et al., 2013), the study is clearing the dust for the graduates in the fields of ICT to move toward the freelancing instead of the traditional jobs, this move should dramatically reduces the rates of unemployment. Set of recommendation is available for the responsible parties (Universities, ICT Companies, Students, Graduates and Governmental Authorities) in order to enhance the working environment and thus reducing the unemployment in ICT fields.

Since the explosion of the internet, web portals and their uses have become more advanced and complex. Web portals are a major source of obtaining information over the internet. It is easier and faster than looking up information in a “real” library. As distance education has moved from traditional, correspondence courses to online educational web sites, it becomes important to look at the usability or “ease of use” of these instructional web sites from the student’s perspective. This research explored what the construct of usability means for students taking online courses, this study has been performed to also analyze the usability of university web portals and how they are used by students, staff and outside visitors. Almost every university has a web portal, but how efficient they are or if they are used as they should be will be determined in this study. A portal by definition is a gateway, a front door to other portals or sites. A university portal should provide certain services for individuals depending on the needs of that user. Moreover, the content and the overall impression of the web portal can influence a potential student when choosing which university they will apply to. Every year millions of people visit university web portals looking for information. This could be, for example, students looking for course information, change in lecture times, account access or teacher contact information. It is very important that the whatever it is the user is searching for is easy to find and the content is easily understood. Although, the construct of usability is not well understood, it is apparent that usability does not reside in software alone, but instead is a construct resulting from the interaction of software design and user expectations. This study sought to understand what usability means within the context of one online and distance learning program at universities.

Mental health practitioners rely heavily on new and upcoming research and theories when determining the best course of treatments for the disorders that their patients have. Therefore it is important for them to have a comprehensive framework under which they can base their therapeutic practice in a way which would best resolve the issues that their client has. A big problem when comorbid substance use disorders and schizophrenia occur is that there is no wide consensus how to best go about tackling the symptoms of these disorders. Blanchard (2000) has proposed a model which attempts to explain the comorbidity in terms of individual personality characteristics. Due to its relatively recent nature, the model has some scientific backing, but not enough for it to be generalisable and valid enough for mental health practitioners to work under its frame of thought. The research I propose here is a longitudinal study which is built around Blanchard's Affect Regulation Model of substance addiction in schizophrenia. Hopefully, by controlling for the confounding variables which as of today have made current research not fully congruent and in accordance with Blanchard's theory, this study will aid us in better understanding the role that individual characteristics play in the development of this type of comorbidity. Research Proposal
Pandemic has brought a huge shift in the face of education especially with the implementation of remote learning through learning delivery modality. These distance learning modalities are selected based on the circumstances of students and teachers to continue schooling.
Over the last few years, distance education has turn out to be a major trend in education.
In a recent year, more than 100 professional conferences dealt with some aspect of distance education, and almost every professional organization’s publications and conferences have shown a huge increase in the number of presentations and articles related to distance education. Many educators are making grand claims about how distance education is likely to change education and training (Simonson et al, 2015).
The development of modern technology and the Internet has enabled the explosive growth of distance learning. Distance learning is a process that is increasingly present in the world. This is the field of education focused on educating students who are not physically present in the traditional classrooms or student’s campus. Described as a process where the source of information is separated from the students in space and time (Pandza, 2010).
One of the modalities that are being implemented is the modular distance learning wherein it involves individualized instruction where learners use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format. Another is online distance learning is delivering learning through the use of the technology connected to the internet while students and teachers are geographically remote to each other.
The purpose of the study is to understand the experience of modular distance learning and online distance learning as a phenomenon lived by distance learners. This emerged from the researcher’s experience on teaching students in both types of modalities.

This research study seeks to measure the impact of e-banking on commercial banking operations. With our case study being UBA Bank Cameroon, we will set out to examine the relationship between e-banking services and the profitability of the banking institution and also to identify the difference between those who use E-banking Services and Counter Service. We will use the T-test model and a simple correlation model to establish a relationship between e-banking services and the profitability of the banking institution whilst also establishing the difference between customers who use e-banking services and customers who use the counter service. In conducting this research, we will use both primary and secondary data. Furthermore, quantitative and descriptive methods of analysis will be adopted to examine the impact of e-banking services on the profitability of the banking institution.

The research focuses on observing, documenting and indexing design and processes patterns found in the coral reef biome. Looking at the coral reef aquatic biota from an architectural point of view, more specifically, on how the aquatic ecosystem functions and how it is organised can surface valuable insight on how we use the ornament - function ratio in both micro and macro scale design. From a visual design standpoint, the study focuses on indexing new textures, patterns and metamaterials that can lead to new approaches and techniques in product and interior design. From a macro scale the research focuses on new ways of thinking infrastructure and contemporary unexplored frameworks.

Background: UKs engagement in global health through Health Links seems to offer benefits on personal, professional and organizational level. However, the concept of Health Links is only in its infancy and particularly benefits perceived to make a positive impact on personal and professional development have not been monitored and evaluated in sufficient detail yet. This creates the need for further investigations in the field and particularly in the area of medical electives.
Purpose: To examine the impact of international involvement in Health Links on personal and professional development of medical students and to create an example of a systematic approach to monitoring and evaluating link performance in order to make use of their full potential.
Design: This paper proposes a qualitative exploratory study of observations and unstructured interviews with 20 medical students taking part in a University elective in Gambia, Africa. Observations will take place over the 4 week elective. Interviews will be held at 4 weeks after return from the elective. The data will be analysed using the method of thematic analysis.
Conclusions: Limitations of previous studies could be overcome by emphasizing on Ethnographic interviewing techniques, focusing on medical student electives and combining observation and in-depth interviewing methods to gather longitudinal data on personal and professional development in order to create a more comprehensive source of information concerning the area of Health Links.

The findings of the research is based on the experience and observation of the researcher and are hypothetical.
