Abstract: We develop a simulation tool to support policy-decisions about healthcare for chronic diseases in defined populations. Incident disease-cases are generated in-silico from an age-sex characterised general population using standard epidemiological approaches. A novel disease-treatment model then simulates continuous life courses for each patient using discrete event simulation. Ideally, the discrete event simulation model would be inferred from complete longitudinal healthcare data via a likelihood or Bayesian approach. Such data is ...

The requirements, design principles, and statistical testing approaches of uniform random number generators for simulation are briefly surveyed. An object-oriented random number package where random number streams can be created at will, and with convenient tools for manipulating the streams, is presented. A version of this package is now implemented in the Arena and AutoMod simulation tools. We also test

This paper describes a vehicle simulation toolbox developed under Matlab® environment, which can be used to estimate the range of a vehicle battery, or a fuel cell/battery hybrid system. The model is function of mechanical and physical variables that depend not only on the vehicle but also on the ground. This toolbox can be extended to GPS tracking files by means of reading data file plug-ins. Even standard drive cycles can be simulated. Battery and hydrogen consumption, hydrogen storage tank level, battery state of charge, power consumption and fuel cell energy production, maximum range and maximum number of cycles for a real route can be determined. The model facilitates the prediction of the vehicle range and the hydrogen and energy consumption. Real route simulation gives a good approximation of the vehicle speed close to real-life services instead of using driving cycles that are quite arbitrary approximations to a real route.

This paper proposes to combine the 'systems approach' technique with process-oriented modelling and simulation. The process-oriented modelling concept, in which a system is decomposed into a set of component classes, each with a specific data structure, processes and mutual interactions fits well to the general concept of 'systems approach'. The advantages of this are that during the design phase the modelling can be 'problem oriented' and furthermore a hierarchical structure can be designed. Combining this approach with a modern software platform provides opportunities for flexible modelling an reuse of component classes. As an example the modelling of part of a container terminal is shown. An absolute demand on a simulation tool for practice is its speed and the capability to manage large-scale models. A simple benchmark has been worked out in a process-oriented package 'TOMAS', the kernel of which is a fast sequencing mechanism for managing...

A permanent mapping population of rice consisting of 65 non-idealized chromosome segment substitution lines (denoted as CSSL1 to CSSL65) and 82 donor parent chromosome segments (denoted as M1 to M82) was used to identify QTL with additive effects for two rice quality traits, area of chalky endosperm (ACE) and amylose content (AC), by a likelihood ratio test based on stepwise regression. Subsequently, the genetics and breeding simulation tool QuLine was employed to demonstrate the application of the identified QTL in rice quality improvement. When a LOD threshold of 2.0 was used, a total of 16 chromosome segments were associated with QTL for ACE, and a total of 15 segments with QTL for AC in at least one environment. Four target genotypes denoted as DG1 to DG4 were designed based on the identified QTL, and according to low ACE and high AC breeding objectives. Target genotypes DG1 and DG2 can be achieved via a topcross (TC) among the three lines CSSL4, CSSL28, and CSSL49. Results revealed that TC2: (CSSL4 × CSSL49) × CSSL28 and TC3: (CSSL28 × CSSL49) × CSSL4 resulted in higher DG1 frequency in their doubled haploid populations, whereas TC1: (CSSL4 × CSSL28) × CSSL49 resulted in the highest DG2 frequency. Target genotypes DG3 and DG4 can be developed by a double cross among the four lines CSSL4, CSSL28, CSSL49, and CSSL52. In a double cross, the order of parents affects the frequency of target genotype to be selected. Results suggested that the double cross between the two single crosses (CSSL4 × CSSL28) and (CSSL49 × CSSL52) resulted in the highest frequency for DG3 and DG4 genotypes in its derived doubled haploid derivatives. Using an enhancement selection methodology, alternative ways were investigated to increase the target genotype frequency without significantly increasing the total cost of breeding operations.

A technically accurate, credible, and cost-effective energy performance rating system aided by use of accurate simulation software has lead, over the last decade, to a transformation of the building fenestration market and industry in North America. A transformation continues to spread to other countries. These simulation tools provide the technical basis for fenestration design, rating, labeling, promotion, marketing and regulation (both voluntary and mandatory). In the United States, window thermal performance is rated under the auspices of the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). NFRC’s rating system utilizes simulations of window energy performance, validated by a limited number of measurements, through administrative and technical procedures to produce fair, accurate and credible ratings of fenestration performance. It is through the use of both good science and credible certification procedures that industry and the marketplace put credence into a rating system that is...

A formal modeling technique, based on colored timed Petri net and UML static structure modeling languages is used to teach students to model their business process problem as a discrete event system, before they build a working simulation model in a simulation tool (in our case Arena). Combining Petri net and UML static structure diagrams, one can build an abstract, well defined and complete model. This model enables the simulation analyst to make an unambiguous, complete and yet easily readable model of the target operational process. The two most important classes of decisions that are reflected in the conceptual model are the choice of the real world details to be taken in or left out the model and the precise specification of the output parameters of the simulation. This paper describes the modeling technique and discusses its value in teaching and in the formulation of decision problems regarding operational processes.

IDA Indoor Climate and Energy (ICE) is a recently developed tool for simulation of thermal comfort, indoor air quality and energy consumption in buildings. It covers a range of advanced phenomena such as integrated airflow and thermal models, CO 2 modeling, and vertical temperature gradients. It has a multi-level user interface to accommodate different types of users. It is primarily intended for HVAC designers and architects, but is also appreciated by educators and researchers. In this paper the advantages of the modern simulation tool are shown in prediction of indoor climate. KEYWORDS Modeling, comfort, energy, displacement ventilation

We present our progress on the Virtual Vision paradigm, which prescribes visually and behaviorally realistic virtual environments, called" reality emulators", as a simulation tool to facilitate research on large-scale camera sensor networks. We have successfully exploited a prototype reality emulator---a virtual train station populated with numerous autonomous pedestrians---to rapidly develop novel solutions to challenging problems, such as multi-camera control and scheduling for persistent human surveillance by next- ...

It is well-known that big cities suffer from traffic congestion and all consequences that come with it. This is an especial problem in cities in developing countries where the public transportation system is not reliable and where the fleet of vehicles tend to be old thus increasing air pollution. There is no turnkey solution for this problem, but several improvements have been suggested in the field of urban and traffic management, provided an information system is built which can provide information to both the traffic experts and the user of the system. Such an information system has to incorporate features of an ITS and an ATIS. An underline assumption is that there is a simulation model to provide certain kinds of information in forecast. This paper discusses the model and implementation of such an information system which is based on a microscopic model of simulation and on cellular automata and is implemented using agent technologies and with a bottom-up philosophy in mind. We give here an overview of the project, the details of the modules (data, simulation, driver and information/visualization), as well as discuss an application of the simulation tool.

Internet was designed for network services without any intention for secure communication. Exponential growth of internet and its users have developed an era of global competition and rivalry. Denial of service attack by multiple nodes is capable of disturbing the services of rival servers. The attack can be for multiple reasons e. g. extortion or to beat the rivals. Peer

This paper describes a vehicle simulation toolbox developed under Matlab® environment, which can be used to estimate the range of a vehicle battery, or a fuel cell/battery hybrid system. Battery and hydrogen consumption, hydrogen storage tank level, battery state of charge, power consumption and fuel cell energy production, maximum range and maximum number of cycles for a real route can be determined. Simulation tools are very helpful for cost-effective design of wireless networks and useful to have better understanding of many phenomena. Ad hoc networks are one of the complex wireless systems because of the difficult to have good prediction in their topology changing. Our contribution in this paper is to provide as well as possible the best description of ad hoc scenarios in order to have a better analysis of the physical layer, and finally to improve performances of the whole network. We have created a scenarios generator to be able to generate a large number of scenarios with the same set of parameters or various scenarios. To meet some requirements of military use (which is our main application) we have proposed improvements of some classic mobility models. Many figures are depicted to illustrate our approach. And finally, we present the results in term of channel behaviour while coupling the generator with a semi-deterministic propagation model.
