This article explores the impact of Catholic confessionalism on humanist scholarship by focusing on the edition of Augustine of Hippo’s collected works produced by the Leuven theologians in 1577–8. This edition replaced Erasmus’ controversial version and claimed to provide an authoritative, Catholic text. Yet an analysis of the paratextual presentation shows that the result was a neutralised Augustine, rather than a paragon of Tridentine Catholicism. The editors avoid controversial theology, while silently copying substantial parts of Erasmus’ censurae and marginal notes. Local politics and publishing interests explain the intriguing survival of Erasmus and exemplify the disparate implementation of Trent in Catholic Europe.

The character of the scholarly patronage community of Jixia in the Warring States (480–221 b.c.e.) polity of Qi has been hotly debated. Was it indeed an “academy,” as it has been retrospectively dubbed? What kind of activities did resident
scholars engage in? What teachings did they propound, what writings did they compose? Following the lead of research by Nathan Sivin and Andrew S. Meyer, the present article does not treat Jixia as an academy proper, but assumes that it was a patronage community sponsored by the Tian/Chen clan. Rather than indulge in more speculations about institutional arrangements and the activities of specific scholars, however, it is argued that intertextual relationships are more likely to shed light on the intellectual concerns of scholars at Jixia. To demonstrate the viability of such an approach, this article analyzes dialogues between King Xuan of Qi (319–301 b.c.e.) and Master Meng in the book Mengzi, demonstrating
that they can be divided into hostile and supportive ones, the latter propounding the principle of “sharing pleasures.” Dialogues included in other compilations that advocate the same principle are then shown to be almost invariably
associated with Jixia scholars. The notion of sharing pleasures, it is finally argued, was part of a wider political debate on princely wastefulness that was characteristic of Qi and is likewise reflected in such compilations as Guanzi,
Yanzi chunqiu, and Liu tao.

This chapter considers how one may use Genette's concepts of paratext and hypertext within transmedia narratives and born-digital texts and explores how Web publication problematizes standard ideas of authorship and copyright. This challenges our concepts of originality and our understanding of what constitutes the text and what stands outside it. This chapter explores Nick Montfort's “Taroko Gorge,” a born-digital poem, and Jasper Fforde's “The Eyre Affair,” analyzed as a transmedia narrative, within the framework of Genette's theories of “paratext” and “hypertext.” This chapter highlights the difficulty of reconciling the intellectual and political necessity of a world in which data is freely shared with the practical concern of how the producers of creative work can make a living.

T his article is on “non-paper” literature, taking as its focus a set of po- ems written on banqueting trenchers. Its intention is to literalise con- siderations of “the material text” by exploring poems on “things”: “things,” moreover, that are place- and occasion-specific, and that therefore have a quite different relationship to their readers and owners from that of books. A second, linked, aim is to examine why such literature is barely studied, and how we might think of printed text differently if we con- sidered “non-paper” writing more. Investigating the way books are cat- alogued as codexes, indexed by content and placed in libraries, while “things” are catalogued as objects, indexed by type, and placed in muse- ums, it asks how much writing is unknown, effectively “lost,” because of where it is housed.

The Hoover Institution at Stanford University holds the largest collection of manu- scripts by Leopold Tyrmand in the world. An analysis of the materials stored at the Hoover Institution provides grounds for dissipating some doubts about the authenticity of his Diary 1954. Today, we are certain that Tyrmand’s work is an original diary that had been written in Poland. However, before it was published, it underwent various modifications (in terms of style, composition, and material). A very important issue is the kind of censorship made by the publishing house. The reading of Tyrmand’s letters proves that not all of the modifications were in accordance with his will, and that not all of them were initiated by him. Moreover, readers of the article will learn some facts about Tyrmand’s creative process and different variants of his works.

Gabler reconstructs and analyses the creation of Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse
with a focus on the third section, ‘The Lighthouse’. The novel’s structure and publication
history are discussed alongside the rich sources on the text’s genesis, (auto)biographical
materials and Woolf’s drafts. These drafts, although only few of them survive, shed light
on the early development of her prose. Gabler’s analysis shows how Woolf departed
from her personal experience – traces of which are visible in the earliest drafts – and
gradually transformed the material of memory into fiction, thus endowing her work with
artistic autonomy.

This is an example/sample/guideline Personal Statement for anyone seeking to apply to LSE for a scholarship. The sample is for their Masters in Accounting and Finance course, but can still be helpful for anyone who needs some help in preparing a Personal Statement for whatever course. The biggest take-away from this Personal Statement is that you must do two things: firstly, make it personal to YOU- avoid being general at all costs; and secondly, tie in your experiences (academically, professionally, and leadership-wise) and strengths with the course you are applying to.

The Chinese Buddhist canon is a systematic collection of all translated Buddhist scriptures and related literatures created in East Asia and has been regarded as one of the “three treasures” in Buddhist communities. Despite its undisputed importance in the history of Buddhism, research on this huge collection has remained largely the province of Buddhologists focusing on textual and bibliographical studies. We thus aim to initiate methodological innovations to study the transformation of the canon by situating it in its modern context, characterized by intricate interactions between East and West as well as among countries in East Asia.
During the modern period the Chinese Buddhist canon has been translated, edited, digitized, and condensed as well as internationalized, contested, and ritualized. The well-known accomplishment of this modern transformation is the compilation of the Taisho Canon during the 1920s. It has become a source of both doctrinal orthodoxy as well as creativity and its significance has greatly increased as Buddhist scholarship and devotionalism has utilized the canon for various ends. However, it is still unclear what led to the creation of the modern editions of the Buddhist canon in East Asia. This volume explores the most significant and interesting developments regarding the Chinese Buddhist canon in modern East Asia including canon formation, textual studies, historical analyses, religious studies, ritual invention, and digital research tools and methods.

The focal point of this thesis is recent discussions and views on the supposedly lost Book of Noah by three scholars namely Michael Edward Stone, Divorah Dimant and Richard Steiner. Thus, the project examines the scholarly debates or discourse, tensions and discussions that are ongoing among scholars in the field of Pseudepigrapha studies particularly regarding the Book of Noah. It explores the different key moments/turns in the history of the Book of Noah about how scholars at different time periods and contexts have imagined and argued for or against the existence of such entity, and what this discussion may tell us about the development of studies of Jewish Antiquity as a modern discipline. It employs meta-critical literary analysis and Book History as method and theory respectively. The thesis belongs to the discipline History of Religions.

This essay proposes to share with the readers some of the experiences of using commentaries on Sanskrit texts, particularly philosophical texts. No Sanskrit work can be
understood properly or adequately without the help of commentaries yet the commentators were not and could not be omniscient. After providing an overview of how ancient texts in India were taught by the gurus and how in course of time commentary writing side by side oral instruction
came into being, it is shown that all commentaries cannot be reliable on all occasions. The time lag between the base text and the commentaries thereon often disables the commentators to be certain about the collocation of the words, especially technical words in the base text. Secondly,
lack of historical sense often makes the commentators opt for untenable significations of certain terms occurring in the base text. Thirdly, the personal philosophical affiliation of the
commentators often misleads them to interpret the text in a way inconsistent with the intention of the original author. All this has been shown with examples selected from various texts, philosophical and otherwise, and their commentaries. The essay concludes that commentaries are doubtless necessary and helpful and should be made use of wherever available; nevertheless it
must be kept in mind that ancient commentators were no less, if not more, fallible than we are and their works should be treated with caution, not regarding them as the last word, as some students and scholars still do.

Revisions to the Greek NT in NA28 are restricted to the Catholic Epistles—the product of the Münster Institute’s ongoing work on the Editio critica maior. The text of the rest of the NT remains unaltered. The updated manuscript data, however, spans the apparatus of the entire NT and signals a new day for its textual history. The revised correctors of the Apocalypse in Codex Sinaiticus make the point. The proposed revisions have direct and far-reaching implications for the book’s textual history. Corrections once placed in the fourth through sixth centuries now occupy the seventh. The changes appear slight, even inconsequential—“touch ups” in support of the task of reconstruction. The clarification and re-dating of the correctors, though, represent a material shift with instant repercussions. The inclusion of new and additional witnesses—alongside of and in juxtaposition to the corrections—further portend altered textual alignments and disclose forgotten chapters in the history of textual criticism. The clarity of the new data also facilitates an examination of their limitations and unclutters the landscape for renewed textual research. The stage is set for a reappraisal of the Apocalypse’s textual history.

A bibliography is a performative place of changeable references, with the capacity to exhibit research and serve as a site for interaction. Too little attention has been paid to the visual materiality, graphic textuality, and conceptual underpinnings of subject bibliographies, for instance the ways in which they represent resources, the ways in which they influence the reader-researcher, and the ways in which they deal and trade in surrogates. This thesis winds up the fields of textual studies, library science, and graphic design, with a healthy dose of voices from geography, art history, literature, architecture, and poetry.

This essay explores early modern playbills (advertisements for plays) asking 1) how were bills produced? 2) in what numbers? 3) where were they found? 4) what were they hung with? 5) what specific information did they provide? The answers give a visual and bibliographical context for the bill; determine how visible playbills were in a London that had rejected the theatre itself; suggest whether bills 'belonged to' specific places and how those places themselves can be 'read'; give bills a mileiu and show the first context, preceding the theatrical one, in which plays were to be found; explore how theatres and playwrights were dealt with in the bill; and reflect on questions of the authorship of such bills.

Focused on two sixteenth-century editions of a medieval Valencian author (Ausiàs March, 1400-59), this book examines how the material transformations of early modern poetic texts at different stages in their publication process—from the making of the printer’s copy and the translation of the text, to the typesetting and editing of the book in the printing shop—entailed thorough changes in the meaning of a lyric corpus.

FROM THE BACK COVER: What is the essential nature of meaning? . . . . . This book answers by examining interpretive theories from the past and present. It finds that an historical struggle with meaning has been underway since the Reformation, a struggle that reaches crisis proportions in the 20th century. On the one hand, this crisis is mollified by Heidegger's hermeneutical phenomenology, which argues that we are always already in a meaningful relationship to the objects of the world. On the other hand, this crisis is exacerbated when phenomenology, structuralism, and aesthetic theory directly make meaning into an object of study. . . . . . . . . These historical developments culminate with the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, whose non-hermeneutical phenomenology delimits a cause of meaning said to be closely linked to the core of subjectivity. Intriguingly, Lacan's work reveals meaning to be sexual in nature. By integrating his notion of sexual difference with his work in discourse theory and topology, this book demonstrates how the subject's struggle with meaning can be suspended.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Broadly speaking, the majority of books on Jacques Lacan focus on the earlier periods of his career. They also tend to target the psychoanalytic clinical community, or else discuss his work in various political, social, and cultural contexts. But in almost all cases these books refrain from a detailed exegesis of his actual texts. They instead prefer to comment on his theoretical apparatus as a whole before turning to its practical implications. . . . . . This book positions itself against this grain. Firstly, it closely analyzes some half-dozen key Lacanian texts. This analysis is organized under a single thematic – the question of meaning – in order to advance the reader's understanding of the trajectory of Lacan's thought across his entire career, as well as to promote the book's thesis that the field of meaning can be suspended. Accordingly, an initial chapter takes up the hermeneutical tradition from Flacius onward. This is then supplemented by a chapter which surveys phenomenological, structuralist and aesthetic theories of meaning and their differing methods of textual analysis. Together these two chapters provide a unique context for the sustained analysis of Lacan's texts which begins in the third chapter, an analysis that forms the bulk of the book's content. This contextualization potentially widens the book's appeal to any scholar wishing to explore his relationship to those textual objects he interacts with on a daily basis. And because this book assumes the reader has little to no familiarity with Lacan, the reader will find patient explanations of the basics of his theories before slowly being led up to the more difficult theories of his late years. Again the argument is that Lacan has something to offer all scholars. His work is not just reserved for psychoanalysts. . . . . . It is with his late theories that the serious student of Lacan will find the book's most original contribution. For in the fourth chapter a detailed account is provided of how Lacan derived his infamous formulae of sexuation from Aristotelian logic. These formulae are then extensively discussed against the backdrop of interpretive theory and textual analysis, showing how these formulae capture much more than just the difference between the sexes. Strikingly, this difference is also found to run through meaning itself, something the final chapter aims to demonstrate. It does this by amalgamating three key components of late-Lacan: sexuation, discourse theory and his use of topological spaces. This amalgamation is a first in the literature. But this amalgamation is not just useful in demonstrating the book's thesis. It further suggests how seemingly divergent aspects of late-Lacanian theory can be made to work together.

This conference in the History of Reading will bring together scholars working on the private libraries of some of the major literary figures in world literature. The aim of the conference is to explore reading habits, note-taking practices, marginalia and other traces of reading experience and book collecting in a comparative context. At the same time, the conference will offer a forum for the discussion of theories and methodologies that underpin this kind of research, as well as the problems and challenges of reclaiming, representing and editing the evidence of reading writers and writing readers from the archive.

Based on a review of the literature and historical evidence, I argue that the use of the methodological principle known as the priority principle in AngloAmeri can Nietzsche scholarship is inconsistent and irreconcilable with historical evidence. It attempts to demarcate between the published works and the Nachlass. However, there are no agreed upon necessary and sufficient conditions of a particular textual object being considered "Nachlass." This absence leads to implicit and often tacit value demarcation criteria that can be broadly grouped into four types of consider ation: publication, authorization, publicness, and audience. Each of these criteria pick out a different set of texts as "Nachlass." Thus, despite the veneer of agreement, the most broadly accepted methodological approach in the AngloAmerican tradition of Nietzsche scholarship is applied inconsistently. I argue that we must either offer necessary and sufficient conditions for a piece of text being Nachlass, or we ought to abandon such abstract criteria altogether and embrace a contextual and historical approach. I then argue that the first option is impossible given historical evidence. I conclude this article by explicating several recent German approaches to the Nachlass which I think can offer a new possible approach.

According to Aristotle, as quoted in the beginning of the Convivio, it is natural for everyone to long for learning and knowledge, a process which is mainly based on memory,1 because – as Beatrice spells – «non fa scienza / senza lo ritenere avere inteso» [«there is knowledge only insofar as there is the ability to remember what we understood»] (Par. v 41-42). Particularly in the Comedy, where the pilgrim’s experience is so difficult to understand and recount, memory is crucial to support Dante’s mission to speak out about what he saw: at the end of Purgatorio, it is again Beatrice to remind Dante the character about the importance of his remembrance of the various prophecies and of the metaphorical meanings of the things he saw.
