The aim of the present study was to clarify the effect of carbohydrate (CHO) supplementation on moderate and high-intensity endurance exercise in the heat. Eight endurance-trained men [maximal oxygen uptake ( VO(2max)) 59.5+/-1.6 ml kg(-1) bw(-1), mean+/-SE] cycled to exhaustion twice at 60% VO(2max) and twice at 73% VO(2max) at an ambient temperature of 35 degrees C. Subjects ingested either a 6.4% maltodextrin solution (CHO) or an artificially flavoured and coloured placebo (PLA). Time to fatigue was significantly greater with CHO in both the 60% and 73% VO(2max) trials (14.5% and 13.5% improvement, respectively). Heart rate and oxygen uptake ( VO(2)) did not differ at any point between PLA and CHO. Hypoglycaemia was not seen in any condition but plasma glucose concentrations tended to be higher at both intensities when CHO was fed. CHO oxidation rates were similar at 60% VO(2max) between CHO and PLA. There were no differences between PLA and CHO in the rate of rise of rectal temp...

Pressure vessel and piping systems are widely used throughout industry and research laboratories and contain a very large concentration of energy, and yet, despite the fact that their design and installation comply with federal, state and local regulations and recognized industrial standards, there continue to be serious pressure equipment failures. There are many reasons for pressure equipment failure: degradation and

In this article, using first-principles electronic structure calculations within the spin density functional theory, alternated magnetic and non-magnetic layers of rutile-CrO2 and rutile-SnO2 respectively, in a (CrO2) n (SnO2) n superlattice (SL) configuration, with n being the number of monolayers which are considered equal to 1, 2, ..., 10 are studied. A half-metallic behavior is observed for the (CrO2) n (SnO2) n SLs for all values of n. The ground state is found to be FM with a magnetic moment of 2 μB per chromium atom, and this result does not depend on the number of monolayers n. As the FM rutile-CrO2 is unstable at ambient temperature, and known to be stabilized when on top of SnO2, the authors suggest that (CrO2) n (SnO2) n SLs may be applied to spintronic technologies since they provide efficient spin-polarized carriers.

The present study was undertaken to develop sustained release (SR) matrix tablets of Losartan potassium, an angiotensin-II antagonist for the treatment of hypertension. The tablets were prepared by direct compression method along with Kollidon SR and Methyl Cellulose as release retardant polymers. The evaluation involves two stages- the physical properties studies of tablets and in vitro release kinetics assessment. The USP paddle method was selected to perform the dissolution test and 900 ml phosphate buffer of pH 6.8 was used as dissolution medium at 50 rpm at 370C. The release kinetics were analyzed. All the formulations followed Higuchi release kinetics. When the release data was plotted into Korsmeyer-Peppas equation, then it was confirmed that F-1, F-2, F-3, F-4 and F-5 exhibited non-fickian type drug release whereas F-6 exhibited fickian type drug release from the tablet matrix. The in-vitro release studies revealed that the formulation F-2 can be taken as an ideal or optimiz...

Mains water temperature (T{sub mains}) has significant influence on the energy consumption of water heating equipment. It is dominantly influenced by ambient temperature (T{sub amb}). Since T{sub amb} is roughly an annual sinusoid, T{sub mains} is assumed to be a sinusoid whose mean value varies directly with annual average temperature T{sub amb},{sub ann}. Model parameters are based on water system physics and include: (i) a constant offset from T{sub amb},{sub ann}; and (ii) amplitude and phase which vary linearly with T{sub amb},{sub ann}. Available T{sub mains} data indicate that the offset is 6 oF, and that the amplitude is 0.4T{sub amb} Uncertainties include: (i) data quality issues, including bias of T{sub mains} data from heat exchange with house air; (ii) inherent spatial variations in mains networks, and (iii) limited data sets. Future work includes acquiring quality data sets, testing the model in northern climates, and refining parameter estimates.

The Paestum travertines, outcrop in the southern part of the Sele plain (Campania, southern Italy)and span in age from the late Pleistocene to the Recent. We have considered both the travertines resting under the ancient town of Paestum (founded by Sybaris Greeks in the VII century b.C.) and in its vicinities, as well as the travertine incrustations that post-date the

Stopped-flow cryoenzymology has been used to study the reaction of porcine kidney cytosol leucine aminopeptidase [alpha-aminoacyl-peptide hydrolase(cytosol), EC 3.4.11.1] with L-leucylglycyldansyl hydrazide in 50% (vol/vol) methanol buffer over the -40 to 23 degrees C temperature range. Resonance energy transfer between tryptophan residues of the enzyme E and the dansyl group of the substrate S has been used to detect the formation and interconversion of reaction intermediates (E X S)i. Above 0 degrees C, a single intermediate E X S is formed and decays by first-order kinetics to products. However, at temperatures below -20 degrees C, a new intermediate (E X S)' is observed immediately after mixing, which relaxes to E X S within 100 msec. Because the detection of this new intermediate would not have been possible at ambient temperatures, this illustrates the value of stopped-flow cryoenzymology for studies of catalytic pathways.

Current and conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) measurements were made over the Oregon shelf near 43°N between February 1981 and April 1984 as part of a large‐scale west coast shelf experiment (SuperCODE). The data set includes a nearly continuous record of current velocity and temperature over the continental shelf off Coos Bay from May 1981 through January 1984, CTD sections off Coos Bay in January or February of each year from 1981 to 1984, and CTD sections off Newport (44.6°N) in April 1983, July 1983, and April 1984. The latter are compared with sections off Newport made during the previous two decades. Sea level from the Newport tide gage, daily sea surface temperature at Charleston (43.3°N), the alongshore component of the wind stress at 45°N and the large‐scale North Pacific atmospheric pressure pattern provide a climatological perspective. The initial manifestation of El Niño off Oregon was in October 1982: anomalously high sea level, high coastal sea surface tempera...
